Full size real cockpit for CloD?

Or other sims? I remember back in Il-2 days several people were building full size realistic cockpits for combat flight sims( I rememeber a guy in Germany building the whole fuselage of a Fw-190 out of plywood....,)but I haven't seen much in the way of photos recently.I just looked at "show us your cockpit but didn't find much in the way in a quick search.Googling the subject showed me a whole lot of people building airliner cockpits(!!!!!?)Does anyone have photos or info on his subject.I have a friend who is very interested in same...not me I'm waiting for some form of Oculus to come along!

Most of non "FSX" cockpit builders go for F-16 cockpits, some has done Ka-50 heli.

WWII pit's is rare. And curious the few done are most for use with... FSX. E.g. Pat P-47

In A2A foruns you find other examples.

Some guys take this too serious, look at this "pilot" gear:

That pit is awesome and nerdy at the same time!
My girl walked in while I was watching this video. She must have seen the big grin on my face because I was told in words ATAG doesn't allow here to not even think about it! If she only knew that I was already in for around $1500 for a sim that cost $19.99 she might reconsider our current relationship.

My box looked like KITT, not only was it fun for playtime, it was my required watching spot for Knight Rider also, I think the box lived on till my parents moved this past year, although it was relegated to housing old shoes

I'm planning on slowly building a Tomcat cockpit for the DCS F-14 module. Unsure if I'm going to make it a two seater though

Cardboard box???Oh if only this wonderful sim ship from my childhood was still available ( minus my little brother...)

It even had a simulated instrument board so you could chart your voyage>you kinda needed a flashlight to see your progress because with the cockpit canopy down it was kinda dark inside...But for $6.95 COD you had to deal with it!

"You talkin' to me...?" Honest if I had my friend's money or other's building skills, AND-ah a wife who could or would understand,I would have loved at one time to go this route ,probably with a Bf-109 build,BUT my real belief is that eventually Oculus or something like it will make such cockpit builds if still neat, a bit unnecessary...

Even Occulus won't be enough. You need a motion base to simulate G forces and you need to enclose the sim so that all you see is what is on the screen. Then, no outside visuals can intrude on the experience. That's why professional sims are in a box.

Re: Full size real cockpit for CloD?

you can build a perfect replica and sit in it if you have the skills, but what's the point?

Your still looking at a screen no different to sitting on a chair, your cockpit is also on the screen so you have duplicated the view ruining any immersion as you have two cockpit views, your sitting in a cockpit looking at a screen and to look behind you or up, your still looking at the screen in front, for the cockpit to be a simulator you would need the all round vision that even full blown military simulators don't fully provide!

Oculus will solve a lot of the issues of immersion, but then you don't need a cockpit, you need a seat with a stick throttle and switch panels, either way sitting in a pretend aeroplane is hardly a "simulator".

If ww2 cockpits had sundry papers strewn around, collections of cups of coffee in varying stages of being drunk and various peripherals then my gaming desk is a close replica ....

these last few posts were a hoot..I tend to agree about the promise of Oculus, but the one about old candy wrappers & scraps of paper hit pretty close to home.
The pix of Rocketeer's ride looks like something out of Myst!

I flew the simulator for the B2 stealth bomber once. Was glade I was not in the real thing, would have cost the nation 2 bil. or so.

But the most fun I ever had in a simulator was when I was about 6. Climbed under the coffee table and drew dials/controls with crayons. Then spent hours flying around the milky way.

Back in IL-2 "hey days" when I see Pierre 2a Fw 190 drawings I think build one.

    http://www.checksix-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=121928

But thinking about, conclude that as I don't fly only in Fw 190, and a detailed cockpit is more about replicate the procedures of real plane - why many 727 &etc cockpits - I give up the idea.

The next idea as some kind of "Link Trainer" (without movements), but never took seriously.

Same reason people build remote controlled aircraft. For fun.

My pit will not be a replica but a gaming station meant for simming and easy to switch to FPS gaming. It will also finally allow me to sit on an angle and get some pressure of my lower back. Scaffolding killed it.

All my buttons, switches and levers will be in easy reach giving me a combat advantage I hope. This is one of my favorite activities besides playing outside in my truck. I can't always be gallivanting around the mountains but I can have a comfy sim pit for my regular evening sessions.

Most of all though, because my wife said I could. :p

For me it also makes sense. I'm building mine in an Airstream. I'm going to stack it on top of a couch where the wife watches TV like bunk beds. It's going to be like my tree fort. I'm a 35 year old child some days.

Plus it will be impossible to find where you put your beer when you're using Occulus Rift.
I can see many throttle quads getting a good ale soaking when OR arrives!

For WW II fighters use OR will be not issue, has this planes have few commands - other than engine controls is basically flap and landing gear switchs.

See this guy with controls suitably positioned:

Thats one of the main issue i've found with the OR, no more use of keybord, mouse or anything else then your hotas. It is very challenging
It takes an airplane to bring out the worst in a pilot.

It is thrust me, just try a sorti without using your key or mouse, we don't realise how much we are using them
