    Major breakthrough in science

Pretty cool stuff! Hopefully it will be confirmed during the news conference.

    Re: Major breakthrough in science

Time/Space travel "around the corner" (century)? If they can send a beam of light into the waves they will be able to somehow send a probe i guess. A peek on waves who have the same shape since they were created zillions years ago. (this is imagination speaking). Nevertheless seems exciting, indeed.

    This is a good video:

Probably will be one of the biggest scientific discoveries of our lives.

Einstein's time, really. He discovered it, these guys just proved it.

I'd say he theorized it, the announcement today proves he was correct and proves how important he was/is/will be in the development of the human race.

Thanks for the share Spiritus. I cant wait to see the data, hope its not just dirt on the mirror or something again. Einstein was the tits and the balls

    Re: Major breakthrough in science

Very important confirmation of one of the key elements in Einsteins Theory of Relativity.

In practical terms it will allow us to interprete the data from these waves to more accurately map the universe and its objects.

    Re: Major breakthrough in science

Really wonderful stuff. I guess this technology could eventually be used to also discover other objects like planets? Very interesting. I wonder if a spacecraft could "ride" a wave. Maybe then we could find a way to launch craft at much higher speeds than before? This raises so many questions in astronomy/space flight/exploration etc. Hopefully they manage to use this finding to make other cool discoveries.

    Re: Major breakthrough in science

Someone in 1865 calculated that there must exist radio waves, then in 1888 someone listened to them for the first time, history repeated itself when in 1916 he calculated it, and now we listened to these waves for the first time. Exciting, since we figured out how to control radiowaves...so what's next in the distant future?

    Re: Major breakthrough in science

I am truly sorry SM. Don't want to disappoint, but those are not gravitational waves and it is my fault. On the day in question a work colleague finally responded to the heavy guilt trips we were laying on him and opened his wallet with a view to buying a round from the workshop coffee machine.

Shockwaves are still rebounding around the universe as we speak. As are several moths and the rather desiccated corpse of a house mouse that once got trapped within.
