This is a list of all the controls needed for the gunner positions in the various aircraft. It will give you the ability to jump into any gunner position and be ready for the action.

Gunner controls

manned position #2 (rear gunner for Stuka and BF 110)
manned position #3 (rear gunner for Blenheim)
manned position #4
manned position #5
manned position #6
manned position #7
manned position #8 (the He 111 has 6 gunner positions)

toggle park position (cruise position/firing position)

move mount up
move mount down
move mount left
move mount right

toggle independent mode (on/off mouse control for weapon)

field of view -
field of view +
field of veiw 30 degrees
field of view 70 degrees
field of view 90 degrees (all optional views)

lean to gunsight

toggle canopy

jettison canopy

bail out

map

Having a TrackIR for this position is a real advantage, but you can use your hat switch to look around.

As a rear gunner, you can also assist your pilot with the Lotfe7 chart, navigation, target spotting, as well as filling your pursuer's cockpit full of lead. Once you get the hang of deflection shooting from the front, your enemy will regret his encounter.

To get into someone's gunner position, you must be able to spawn into the map or all ready be in the map (even dead) and within 5 miles of each other. Hit escape to briefing screen, scroll down the list until you see the empty position in the desired gun position, under their name. Double click on it.

If the pilot has already jumped into that position, it will block you out of this gunner position. In this case, have the pilot enter that position and hit Alt F2. This will clear the slot for you and kick the pilot back into the pilot's seat.

If you are flying escort for bombers and get shot down, it's a perfect opportunity to jump into the bombers gunner position. Stick with your comrades to the very end.

Don't forget to sight in your guns at a far distance, and give yourself a good loadout with lots of armor piercing rounds to cut through that engine block.

Also, you can reverse the pitch axis of your mouse in the conf.ini file. It's in documents/ 1csoftclub/ il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover - mod.

scroll down to [rts_mouse]

change invert=0 to invert=1 and save.

You can also change your mouse speed/sensitivity in this section, the higher the number the more sensitive.

[rts_mouse]
SensitivityX=4.0
SensitivityY=4.0
SensitivityZ=4.0
Invert=1
SwapButtons = 0

Good luck and have fun.:thumbsup:

Here is a link to a mission ATAG_Freya created to practice rear gunnery in the Blenheim. The pursuers have their guns reduced to allow for practice.

S!,

Question for ATAG Keller:

I am learning the Ju-88 A-1 and as a reference reading the excellent Cliffs of Dover Technical Brief by II/JG53. On page 31 C. Example Keyboard Layout the KP Num 0 has "Toggle Guns GHT".

What does that mean?

Thanks in advance.

Besides fire current weapon, most of those controls are already mapped in an aircraft. They will work in the gunner position I assume?

Kameraden,

Possibly it means Lean to Gunsight for Bomb Aiming, the reason I asked ATAG Keller is that he is mentioned as supplying content for the manual.

The command "Lean to gunsight" - default keys Shift+F1 (formerly called "Louse shoulder straps" and due this subjected to criticism) work for:

- Center/look through Bf 109/Me 110 gunsight (pilot position)
- Look at bombsite reticle (bombardier position)
- Look through gunner MG sight (gunner position)

why, while in gunner position, with mouse control on, when I fire the mg using leftmousebutton, the weapon stops moving until I stop firing? Shuld I map a different key for weapon fire?

Try mapping the 'Fire secondary weapon' to a separate key, it sounds like a conflict issue. It happened to me, too.

Will try it. Thanks

All i have done is set a X Box controller to Turret axis and buttons.
It has no affect on your flying controls and is intuitive and easy to use.

I used to have a play station control pad for gunner positions, but you can't fly the plane and run the gunner at the same time that way. I've now gone back to spare buttons on my x52.

Like the idea of the game controlers. Never thought of that.:thumbsup:

The mouse has the most accuracy, and it stays put. The analog stick on the PS controller was too sensitive, and the gun returned to Center when you let go of stick. Otherwise, it was pretty cool to just sit back in my seat with a PS controller.

Which command is it to activate the bomber gunner and is it the same with the Stuka or BF 110 gunner?

should be the same as the bomber, lean to gunsight....but in the 87 and 110 if u switch back to pilot you have to re engage the ai to shoot if needed.

This "bug" is a keymap conflict in original MG keyboard layout.

The Left Mouse button came mapped for "Fire current weapon" (gunner MG in case) in "General" category. Leave in this way as is useful for fire gunner weapon.

And Left Mouse button came mapped for "Hold do Zoom Camera" in "Camera" category, what is a almost useless command - need press Left and Middle mouse buttons and move mouse back and forth, awkward - delete this assignment and instead use (TF) option for Field View + and -, mapping keys or joy/HAT button for this.

I'm not sure of the default, but the command you are looking for is 'toggle park position'. It switches between cruise and fire. The mouse control for gun is 'toggle independant mode'. 'Lean to gunsight' will line your head up with the gunsight.

Good luck, it's a lot of fun and it's helpful for us Bombers.

I am not sure if be "bomber gunner" you mean MG stations in He 111, Ju 88, Br 20 and Blenheim or bombardier (bombsight) cockpit...

Anyway you can access both in two ways:

Using a key/button mapped - in "View" category - for "Change Manned Position", that's cicle Pilot > Bombardier cockpit > Gunner MG1 > MG2... > back to pilot.

Or key/button mapped - in "View" category - for:

Manned Position#1
Manned Position#2
Etc.

I find the last way more practical due the need to pass though bombardier cockpit ( #2) before return for pilot cockpit (#1) to make AI assume the MG position previously occupied by player (#2, #3, #4...)

In bombardier cockpit (#2) use (default) Shift+F1 to look though bombsight reticle.

Im having some trouble in the gunners position, after working out the keys for most of the issues (changing between cruise and firing position, looking down the sights and so forth) however the secret to moving the gun without holding down the middle mouse key continues to elude me and makes the position unplayable. Does anyone know how to toggle mouse control over the gun?

Will post solution later when at PC unless someone gets in first.

I believe the command is called 'toggle independent mode'.

Not for me.

Toggle Independant mode will lock the mouse to the gun. (Curser disappears)

Try a different button for 'Fire current Weapon', to test.

Make sure you deselect it when you leave gunner position.
