View Full Version : Proposed "Flight Night"

Hey guys. I just posted on the 1C forums suggesting such a thing but Dutch thought it might be best to try it out here.

What I'm trying to do is have a set time and place where any given mission or scenario can play out. The objectives don't need to be elaborate, and in fact shouldn't be. It can be pretty much what you have already or based on what you have already -- as long as it can be completed in two to three hours (or under).

The goal is to try and create a set weekly time where people could get online, pick a side, pick a role, and engage in an online scenario with various objectives. I drew up the analogy on the 1C forums as I'm trying to create a "game night" whereas the rest of the week is practice. My Flight Night isn't ultra hardcore, you don't need to be part of a squadron or anything, but it's slightly more organized than just logging on and hoping there are enough people on the server to fly with.

I'd basically like to get ATAG's blessings (and from them perhaps a scenario or two that can be completed in two-to-three hours as I can't build missions myself -- maybe the existing one can be completed in a reasonable time if there's enough people?), and to gauge everyone's interest.

As stated on the 1C forums, the game plan would be simple: make a little e-flyer, make some posts around the community, get people to spread the word, have a start time as well as an earlier "show up" time so that people can get organized and briefed, have at it, see how it goes, adjust, repeat, try and build a "scene". Of course, anyone can log onto the ATAG servers anytime during the week, but ideally everyone would know that server 2, at Time X on Day Y, every week, there's this organized-as-best-we-can engagement that hopefully a bunch of people show up to. Similar to what SimHQ does on Military Monday/Tactical Thursday for their ARMA2 players.

Due to my ineptness as any type of scripting, the best I can offer is to help design, organize, and promote this event, but I'd be happy to do so.

I used to be in a UK-based ARMA2 clan that met every Sunday at 7PM GMT for their "Sunday Ops". That model was great and it's something I'd like to take a page from. 7PM GMT also allowed for anyone in The States to play (it's 11AM PST -- I'm in California) although it kind of shot my day up -- but let's face it, what else would I be doing on a Sunday? If it was, say, every Sunday at 7PM GMT (with a "show up" time at 6:30 PM GMT) then that would include a large swath of players, excluding those poor Aussies and Kiwis. Sorry boys.

I'm out of town on business until early February so in theory we could have until Feb 12th to script, organize, and promote this event. If it turns out to be a success, more things can come (online campaigns, persistent fronts, at the very least a larger CloD community)...if not, hey -- we tried.

Let's show World Of Planes what for! Ok. Pitch complete.

I got the reply from Bliss explaining how hard this would be with the game's current state.

Maybe just something far more casual.

Maybe just a time for people to gather. The "mission" is in whatever state it's in, it's just at Time X on Day Y, people log on to fly so that we can hope to have larger numbers.

Would anyone be interested in that?

There's two versions of the thread. I apologize. I started one here as I thought it was what I should be doing but people are replying to the one on the 1C forums. Sorry for doubling up, I'm not meaning to overwhelm everyone.

Hello!

Right now the server has a mission on going that sounds like what you just described. Building them is a lot of work to. And it takes some work to complete them now for example it took a couple of 110's to bomb and some strafing on 2 trips to put one objective into the completed category.

Once one side completes all their objectives they win and mission starts over. And it's not an quick task at least for me anyway. Coordination would make it go quicker for sure. There are bombers out there all the time in all sizes and lots of fighters pairing up and formation flying. All looking good to.

You should link up with us on TeamSpeak 3 and join us?

Part of this should probably be done by ATAG, which I certainly wouldn'y mind being part of.

Say if i could get a list of ATAG members and their time zone, then you could schedule certain times and or days to have that two hour window people could schedule to join in knowing there would be plenty of Fighter/Bombers.

I have joined the server many time to find there are no players interested in bombing just dog fighting (which isn't an issue as it s all fun) But if I knew like once a week on a certain day/time where I could expect many players, I would be there.

Seems sensible to me Knuckles old bean, people will not have expectations other than there are likely to be more like-minded players on the server at a certain time.

I'm GMT but can and do fly other time-zones as well. I'd be happy to fly any bomber or escort or cap, whichever we might be short of. Simply knowing there's an incoming force of player flown bombers with escort going to attack one or more targets during a time-window would be great fun from either offence or defence. If we get enough players both sides could do both!

Just time for a swift Noggin at the Filly and Furkit before the next OP.

Cheers Chaps.

I'd actually love to join you guys.

I'll get that going when I return home from business in early February. I had some downtime out here and I figured I see if I could get the ball rolling on something I had been thinking of for some time.

I'm glad you all are into it. After now knowing the state of the game, I think the best choice would just to have a set time and meet up to fly.

You know, it would be far less official (as in, recognized by the game) but the objectives could be player-given. So let's say you have this English channel map as we do now. And let's say there's no AI planes, there's just the airfields and various ground targets on both sides. Similar to how a dungeon master works in AD&D (don't pretend you're above it) the server admin could issue targets for either side to attack or defend, or issue a server wide command like "fighter sweep over Calais! In-game time of 1400 hrs!" Then, based on whatever criteria the admin (or DM, hehe) feels fit, they can issue a server wide statement that the mission was a success or failure.

I'm just thinking out loud. The first step is to get people to show up.

Do you guys mind if we plan on having our first Flight Night in early February? That'll give us enough time to plan, enough time for me to join you guys (unless I misunderstood "offer"), and enough time to promote the event. I can make a little .jpg poster that we can attach to posts and to emails and whatnot.

What does everyone think about having it on Sunday at 7PM GMT? It's early for us west coast US people, but for everyone else it's fairly reasonable. By all means poll your members, we have the time. Ideally though we'd be including pilots from the entire community.

Something like the image below.

Please don't forward the image for now as nothing is set and we're still figuring everything out. I'm really still just pitching the idea for now...

But the idea would be to try and get the word out by posting this around the 1C forums, SimHQ, wherever else, ideally with a start date (like, "Starting February 12th!") and a time we've all agreed on. I think 7PM GMT works, but there's no point there's a resounding resistance to it.

Hi Greezy!

I'm late to the party, like usual, so a belated welcome to the ATAG Forum!

Certainly inviting more players to the ATAG Server to make full use of the established format of mission objectives is a fantastic idea. 7 pm GMT Sunday equates to 2 pm Toronto time for me, so I will move heaven and earth to be there myself on the designated day to fly Red escort. Everyone should be encouraged to install Teamspeak 3 and perhaps give it (and the ATAG server) a whirl prior to in order to fully enjoy the organized session free of any last minute set up glitches.

Keep us posted here on the ATAG forum!

I'll probably start promoting it in the first week of February. Additionally with that image, I'll mention Teamspeak and the "start date".

I used to live in Toronto. Right at College and Spadina.

Sounds good, similar to bomber's night which was enjoyable.

Should we try and get it going for this Sunday maybe? If so we'd need to start promoting.

I also haven't seen the server on the list. Am I missing something?

I'll try and make it onto TeamSpeak today.
