View Full Version : bf110 dive bombing

One of my favourite aircraft in CLoD is the bf110. Interesting range of missions, although prefer not to hang around with enemy single engine fighters. Books on the bf110 mentions dive bombing, obviously cannot be Stuka type dive bombing!

So some type of shallow dive-bombing technique I suggest. Initial testing with the C7 suggests a shallow dive to around 500 kmh (310 mph). Release is something of a guess-timation from sighting through the gunsight.

Tried skip-bombing over land but the bombs appear to "dig in" rather than skipping.

I would appreciate any clues on (shallow) dive-bombing with the bf110.

thx

I don't have any real insights as I'm somewhat self taught but I have found
the more perpendicular (obviously not fully) u are from about 1000m down to
about 500m the more likely u are to hit the target. I try to put the bottom of
the crosshairs just above the target at release. Throttle back, very course
pitch and down u go. Guess thats pretty much what I do in the Blenhiem too.
So my technique is really a steep dive not a shallow dive. I would think a
shallow dive would be harder to pick your release point.
I'm no pro so someone who does actually know what they're doing would be
good to hear from.

I completely agree.

I've done some bombing with the 110 but have done a lot with the 109; steep angles seem to be the key. 60-70 Degrees is probably the sweet spot.

I agree. Have to get the 110 into a nice angle of attack for a good accurate bomb run.

Oh and single fighters are no problem if you have a good human gunner. Stay very low and fast. Fly straight and let the gunner shoot. You can also switch to gunner and fly if you practice and shoot fighters down.

The 110 is one of my favorites. Eyes in the back of your head with that gunner. Factory installed cup holders and a cigar lighter are options as well!

As Torian very nicely summed up...

From about 2000m, throttle back, very course pitch and angle of attack 60°
Have the target at the centre of your crosshair.
At about 500m start levelling. As soon as the target reaches the the bottom of
your Revi gunsight release.
Continue level and put full throttle in order to continue your exit at maximum speed (or the AAA will have fun on you). Start adjusting your prop pitch.

I tend to line up my attack run in either of two ways:
a. If survival is important: I initiate the bomb run in the way that the exit point lines me up towards the French coast (the best way to ensure I leave the battle low but at max possible speed). [this is why Snapper did not get me that day although he was flying a Huricane ;)]

b. If target is important: Set bomb release to single bomb and initiate the bomb run on the axis that will take you above two objectives (e.g. two tank concentrations). Release the first bomb as explained above and, within 0,5 sec release the second. This usualy gets both enemy concentrations.

I was sooooo frustrated! I was thowing furniture out of the cockpit to lighten the load and hopefully start to gain on you. Until my wife came downstairs, looked at the pile outside the door, and asked "What are you doing?" :)

Maybe I shouldn't be offering any advice in this thread, Colander escorted me all the way from Calais to the radar towers at I12 last night only to watch me exceed maximum speed and crash into the ground. :sad!:

Be mindful of how high you start your dive; once that 110 has her nose down she really likes to pick up speed. :salute:

Ditto in the Blenheim. Straight into the fuel depot this afternoon, just couldn't pull her up in time!
