I've been experimenting with the new and fabulous smoke objects. They're great. Except...

Weird stuff sometimes happens with their "z" coordinate, I think. Here's a screenie of an apocalyptical tryout:

9645

When I look at the .mis file, this is it:

Honestly, I don't know. It looks like the "/height..." value never decreases. It just takes whatever the had was before??? Is this a bug or a feature?...

try it on a flat part of the terrain.
I think that height is "above the terrain" and not absolute height.

Indeed. If I change the "Height" value to zero, now that I've tested in the sober light of day, the smoke plumes seem to sit nicely on the ground, whether it's sea level, hillside or whatever. A bit of a bore to have to go editing the .mis file.

It's a strange setting, though. I haven't seen one in a .mis file before. Obviously, it's like the Z offset value, but there's no way to set it in the object browser. Instead, the FMB seems to set it at whatever the previous smoke plume was, if you see what I mean. So, if you put a smoke plume on a mountain, say, any subsequent smoke plumes you place will be at the level of that mountainside, I think.

One for TF 5.00, perhaps.

You likely have the "use previous height" ticked in the FMB pull down object options menu. This means that all future objects are placed at the same height as the starting object. Untick this option & new objects will be placed at ground level.

Oh Salmo if I had only known this when I created some smoke effects a few months ago I would have saved Mattias a lot of PMs and head aches... :(

Well that's today's "something new" learned... As usual, Salmo to the rescue. :)

To paraphrase Muttley: zuffa-fuffa-shuffa-blah-ha-maffa...

Ya try soo hard, and then CloD goes and reaches down, gives you an almighty wedgie and pulls your own knickers over your head.

:(

I have never knowingly ticked or unticked that option. I will swear upon my grandmother's cherished grave that I was unaware of that option's existence, and I legally assert that I am not now and never have been a fan of that option. But it's there, looking at me, blowing raspberries in my face.

Grrrr-CloD.

I've a mind to start a dedicated "Obscure and Mysterious Menu Items in the FMB" thread. After I've found a cat to kick.

I mean, "Fit Objects" sounds like blurb for a "Men's Lifestyle" magazine. Toggle straight spline sounds vaguely like a David Cronnenberg movie featuring murderous cub scouts. Process Roads, anyone? Roads with all the roughage taken out? Sidekick from a Superhero movie?

Back now to my slough of despond...

I expect this will be little consolation Swallow old chap, but your report gave me a proper lol!

Thanks.
