S! I know it's not a fps, but I'm sure there's many fans of the series, look like it will be a long time before it's released, but it's something I will be definitely looking forward to!

Yep, a great series, so will be interesting to see what IV brings.
If you are interested in this type of gaming, checkout Battlefront Combat Mission CMx2 series of games, shortly to be upgraded to v3.0. CM Battle of Normandy, Fortress Italy and Red Thunder (Op Bagration).

After playing HoI III not half as much as HoI II Doomsday (just for the reason that it fell into the hardcore CloD period) I am looking forward to the sequel!

HoI is just an awesome series!

Personally, I'm hoping for an engine, where you wouldn't be restricted to provinces to deploy units, something more fluid than the province system would be great.

I'm also a fan of the fantastic Close Combat Series, III being my favourite, I'm always on the lookout for the spiritual successor to it and combat mission looks pretty good, might give that one a try!

Apparently Achtung Panzer is supposed to be awesome, too bad it doesn't work very well on my win7.. constant CTD's and glitches.

Also Theater of War 2 - Kursk 1943 was pretty good, didn't quite like the infantry system though.

i just hope they figure out naval combat, playing as japan sucked. there never seemed to be a good explanation of how it worked or what made a good task force.

*10 beta invites will be distributed randomly within the crowd of the most dedicated generals who successfully referred 20 or more people.Signing in does give all the wallpaper and extra DLC so it's worth the effort if you're gonna get the game anyhow.

Thanks by the way to the 1 person who already signed in via my referral-link :salute:

At least there's no unlocks... :recon: I hope the devs won't find this thread :D

I wouldn't worry too much about the point you mentioned though - a good mod is guaranteed to appear soon after release.

HOI2 also didn't have HQ's and simpler research but playability was IMHO better then HOI3, so I'm still enthusiastically looking forward to HOI4.

Don't like the sound of the sprites only idea.
Flashy map, but does HOI really need it!

Sounds like this is going to be a repeat of Silent Hunter series. Trying to go whizz-bang and lose the plot.
Can see a lot of HOI3 players not going for it.

Yes a lot of this looks like dumbing down and adding flashier UI etc. but it is the same team doing it, not a different company. I think don't think they want to alienate their yearlong fans. Hence my hope is the game will be 7 or 8/10 on release and with mods will jump up to a solid 9.

Also, I personally never played with counters, just the sprites. Counters felt very flat for me.

End of Q2 2015 then. Though we'll have to wait a bit longer, it will at least hopefully make HOI 4 a good full release. Nowadays on Steam a lot of the "full releases" are nothing more than beta's which are in need of some heavy patching/polishing. Glad they will not make the HOI series suffer the same disgrace.

In the meantime I'll just dust off my copy of HOI 2 or 3

That's such a loooooooooooooong time to wait though.... At least I won't have a reason to stay up till 3am. This is the only game I know that did that to me :D

Release will probably not be before 2016. We're sure waiting a long time now (look at when this thread started). Paradox apparently wants to release their main title without bugs, something that's unusual for them. That does of course create high expectations so any bugs will be less acceptable. However if they pull it off, wow.

Here's the latest trailer:

Stupid premise in the trailer.

If in the unlikely occurence the British Isles fell, (and somehow the game developers ignored the gorilla in the room... ie. the Royal Navy which would have been sacrificed to prevent an invasion) the Soviets would not have survived the German attack.

Although the British and Americans didn't contribute any troops on the ground, lendlease was critical, especially in 1942, in turning back the Germans. Without the aircraft, tanks, and especially motor transport in the form of the ubiquitous Studebaker truck, they Soviets would have been in a critical situation.

For example, many people don't realize, the Hurricane II was the most common fighter aircraft in the Soviet air force in the south in 1942. They may have had second best performance, (especially when running on low octane Soviet fuel) but better than nothing.

List of good supplied in 1942:

Aircraft 1785
Tanks 3148
Machine Guns 81287
explosives 59 Million pounds
Trucks 36825

It's just a what if scenario - i presume one that is likely to occur in the game at certain difficulty settings. Many things could have gone this way or that way. US isolationism was a possibility albeit a distant one. Soviets would have likely attacked themselves rather than standby and watch UK being defeated knowing they would be next (my pet theory). Either way that's what makes this game a game. HOI series gives you the option to play all the different what if scenarios.

For instance, instead on focusing on panzer development or specialized infantry divisions or attacking yugoslavia, etc. the player can focus on naval attack aircraft - both R&D and production. With a large enough presence - anything that comes near the channel faces a serious beating.

Of course it's still more a game rather than a true simulation in many aspects ( logistics, naval and ground transports etc. all is fairly simplified) but it gives you a fair shot on re-creating what if scenarios. That's what makes it fun. The true test would be putting 2 players live against each other (UK vs Germany), starting at 1936 - to see how battle of Britain would unfold. I think that would be rather lengthy and unwieldy though...

I haven't actually made the plunge yet, just too busy with work and also it's not exactly cheap atm. But which aspects didn't you like? I assume someone will come along sooner or later to mod this much like they did with darkest hour.

I'm curious myself, what don't you like about it? I've enjoyed Paradox's Crusader Kings. They make really immersive games, however Crusader involves a crap ton of reading, and a lot of the systems are far more complex than I can vaguely understand. Either way, it's fun to lock your brother in a dungeon, marry his wife, and steal his land.
:devilish:

HoI IV and Stellaris look like really interesting titles, I was going to wait for them to go on sale and for all the bugs to be fixed. (Although I think I got Crusader Kings pretty early on and didn't notice any major bugs.)

Click through infinite confusing menus whilst the RNG melts your CPU trying to decide the battles that shaped history! Enjoy all the exciting action of the map sometimes going stripey in places!

It would be better if they let you fight the battles at least, like in Total War, other than that I'd rather watch a nice patch of fresh paint drying. If I want to read history I'd pick a history book, not a history game. Sorry, I just don't see the appeal.

well, have you played it? There's a reason so many people like the Crusader Kings and HoI series.

This is the game where you can make your own history. But also you can lead your chosen as it was in real history. My very first HoI series expirience was with reading the book. I even asigned politicians, commanders of divisions and armies like it was written in the book. I was learning military operations and tried to replay it in the game. So it was ineresting for me.

How did they work out?

And what do you actually DO? That's what baffles me. I've watched people play it and they all seem to spend a lot of time going "Ah" and "Ummm" and that's about it.

Is it more streamlined than HOI3 or Crusader Kings? I enjoyed the neat events and plots that came out of CK, but I've spent hours staring blankly at tiny obscure icons in massive complex menus.

i've only played as japan so far. i dont like the fact they penalize you for researching things that are advanced in relation to your time your at. for example as japan i want to get ahead with my carrier research but since the next carrier is 2 years advanced you get a sig penalty in in research time. this go's for planes, tanks etc.

i will say the naval combat seems more open to see whats actually whats happening. they have a small window pop up which displays the 2 fleets and states distance and various stats.

i haven't figured out the battle planner yet.. i still prefer to move units manually.

no air supply in the game is which is insane.

still luke warm to the game. we shall see what updates happen.
