View Full Version : 109 - training mission

Love this sim, especially with the mods. I really need to practice with taking off and landing the 109. Is there a custom training mission out there, just for that? would appreciate anything to help out in the T/O and Landings. I can manage most anything else, but the 109 and Spit are b*tch to takeoff.
I'm able to take off with the DCS P-51, (but with plenty of practice, and a lot of rudder trim). But the 109 ain't got the rudder trim, so I'm using lots of right rudder on my Saitek Combat Rudders, and obviously over control. Most times I crash. Yes, I do go easy throttling up to avoid the torq.
thx.

Last time - for my first flights ever in CoD I went online. I selected airfield far from battle field and gave the information on teamspeak that newbie will do some practice in this area. I heard 'OK'. Then I started with... crashing, perforating radiator, governor malfunctions, bailing out too low, etc. ;)
I hope I did not blocked a slot for normal player (this may be a con).
Otherwise there are only pros:
- you get familiar with radio messages and it is amazing,
- if you will get shooted because enemy will lost around your practice area... well, it is life. ;), but map is really big, so do not afraid,
- after I did successfull takeoff I think I even saw enemy, but I was waaaay to slow (finally I realised, that I forgot about undercarriage),
- it is easier to get some small fast-tips from others
- after some practice you can just fly for some action (until radiator perforation or governor dies) ;)

I offer flight lessons in the Bf-109. Please PM me to set some up. Also, check my Youtube channel in my signature block. I have a flight school section with narrated tutorials on how to taxi, takeoff and land.
You could check you linearity on the rudder. That might help with overdoing it.

thanks, good point. just pick an airfield far away from the action, and declare I'm performing training missions. good idea!

Heiden, thanks M8! I'll check out your youtube clips. Also, I'll reach out to you and see if you're available later this week, and we can meet up on a server.

@ javelin.....Try using ailerons.....I use them in the Spits on takeoff and seems toke a big difference....experiment with it....throttle ,rudder, elevator and ailerons are all your controls so the right use for take off has to only be in those 4
@ b0czek.....The online server has 100 slots...so if there is 100 players the server is full...but usually only takes a few minute of repeatedly joining to eventually get in if that's the case...Do not worry about taking up the slots as a new player...that's what they are there for and you deserve a slot just the same as anyone else....Glad to see you joining the online server as a new player too..There is little damage you can do in there and its the best way to learn so go for it!..My wingman and I spent half an hour offline before we joined the server...If you are concered about hitting folks on take off then get a full tank and take off from a distant airstrip from the front line and get some alt before you hunt...You'll soon be looking for stuff to shoot and there are always distant airstrips on every map

thank Lewis, I'll give it a whirl with the ailerons too... At work today, I was thinking about my T/O procedure, (rather than work). Fancy that. I know that with the DCS P-51, I give 5 degree's of rudder trim, and lock my tail gear, then gently apply the power to avoid the over torque. Then gradually increase the throttle until takeoff speed.
I'm not sure, but maybe the tail gear of my birds are part of the issue. I haven't really mapped a rear tail gear. I see something about a rear tail skid. I'll need to check. I presume the same thing with the Spit & 109, lock your rear tail gear, gently apply power to avoid some of the over torque, and a bit of right rudder, and I should be in better shape? the rear tail gear lock is what I may be missing?
thx,

CloD fighters tail wheel's are not lockable. Seems that tail wheel lock for Bf 109 appear in later E-models (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=31467).
CloD Controls "Lock Tail Skid" (wheel) work for Ju88, Ju87, Fiat BR.20 and the (UFO) Su-26.
In CloD the "secret" is anticipated the side deviation pressing the rudder first:

Great clip there M8! I was 3 for 3 on my T/O's. But on the last one, a Spit was a Vulch and got me as I rolled off of the grass! Thieving B*st*ard!!! such is war. :)
Great info, thanks for the help!

... and remember the "manual" (with 109E4 too) prop pitch at 12:00
no flaps at all, no elevator trim at all
then i just use all right rudder as soon as the plane begin to slip to the left side, for a short time, then neutral for 1-3 seconds, than right rudder again ...
as for the throttle, do not be too gently, i go very fast to 80% and just as the rear wheel detach from the terrain, i go to 100% throttle and at 180km/h i takeoff

thanks to all for the input, I'll test this all out, and hopefully hone my skills.
(I've managed to ramp start the DCS A-10C, and master all of it's weaponry, so hoping to get these tail draggers dialed in too).:P

cool beans. went through a few video's, can get the 109/Spit up just fine, and managed a few good landings. Though I'm still bouncing a little. Will get the hang of it soon.
I'm gonna look at mapping that PP control for the E-4, to something better than just what's on the in cockpit joystick.
Next thing I need to work on is what are the safe parameters for operating the engine controls. A couple times I thought I was within safe range, for PP and the engine RPM. But then the governor blew out on me. Just as I was flying around the Cliffs of Dover. Pretty country.
