View Full Version : Steam?

I need some advice here.... I originally installed the DCS using Steam. I bought the P51 (prior to the WW2 announcement) through Steam.
But I'm noticing Steam isn't keeping things up todate - ie. the new pricing isn't updated on Steam.
Also, I'm interested in trying out the F86 - but I don't see that option on Steam ?
So my first question is: should I just buy directly ? what are the other peeps here doing - are you guys buying directly or using Steam ?
I like Steam because if I format my drive/drive dies, etc... I don't have to remember keys, etc... I just reinstall the game. But at the same time, I don't want to be sitting around waiting for new content while others are playing.
(I'm not sure as well how the WW2 activation for the aircraft will work as well)

I use steam, but I also have the non-steam installed (why - i don't know, I never use it). It seems to keep it up to date just fine, though the other day I had to 'verify integrity of game files' because after the 1.2.9 update I had NO PLANES what so ever. Also it's totally fine to use JGSME for mods with it. The downside is that we usually have to wait for steam to do their sales, and no purchase bonuses or anything like that. The sabre should be coming to steam soonish, I heard August 9th but can't confirm....
I buy direct. I had originally downloaded it through Steam although didn't make any purchases through it. It wasn't so much that I felt direct was in some way superior, just that, as I had learned from RoF new planes and such take longer to get to Steam (still waiting on a few of those). I didn't want to be waiting and waiting for it to show up there when I knew it was already out. Also, the DCS store seems to have sales that coincide with Steam ones. So it was just a matter of being able to get new things earlier. Also I had a 60% off coupon sitting around, which was only good direct and not through Steam, finally used that one for the Sabre :)
I guess on the plus side for Steam, you probably don't have limited activation's, although I'm pretty sure 10 is more than enough for me

There was a policy change by Steam recently. Any DCS games bought directly from ED can't be activated on Steam anymore. Any DCS games bought on Steam can be activated on the normal DCS though - just get the key from Steam and then use instead to register on ED DCS.
Personally I'd go with everything off Steam. You'll get products sooner - especially as more 3rd party developers come online. Some 3rd party developers possibly might not even go with Steam as an option to sell their products. Also you can take advantage of both Steam sales and ED sales to pick up modules during the year. Registration key numbers has never been a problem for me - they regenerate over time and I've never had less than 8 activations left on any module.

That's a good point FOR! I was quite cheesed about that. I've just realized that my non steam install is still version 1.2.6 -- so I go to update and it wants to go to 1.2.7 ... So I have to do a LOT of Downloading to get it up to date. IS there an easy way to update from version X.X to current? Or do I just do a fresh install of DCSworld (which I assume would be 1.2.9, which is still alot of DL-ing)? Also I seemed to recall the update process being tricky to do, which was another reason I went for the steam version. I'm kinda stuck on the fence now, but then I'd say if one is not a person who needs the newest/latest toys ASAP, which I'm not, then I might just hang with steam for a little while longer, but keep the other install updated anyways...I really don't know anymore. :salute:

You're better off doing a fresh download of 1.29 and uninstalling what you have now. But yeah it's a lot of downloading - probably up to 12 gig depending on how many modules you have. Not too bad using the torrent links in the ED downloads page though. I wouldn't use the direct download from ED - way too slow.

+1 One of my Squad Mates has the same question and this is the way to go. Get rid of the Steam version and download the ED version. Any modules bought on steam will work on the ED version just not the other way round. As F O Ron stated, modules are available at the Ed site that are not on steam (as of yet). We are getting the F86 Sabre and it's ready to go for me as I had the ED version (and bought my modules) before steam began to carry it. My Mate had DCS World and the warthog through Steam but he can't currently get the F86 yet, so is redoing everything from ED.
