I created a quick guide for my squadron mates to fly the P-51, so I thought I'd share it with you guys too. Nothing fancy, just the basics that you need to know to get your plane in the air. Once I'm comfortable enough with the Dora, a similar guide for the FW190 should follow.

that 190 is a real handful on the ground, ive managed to take off once from about 10 tries, landing it, lets not go there. its nice up in the air though.

Handy guide for newcomers - might be an idea to include aileron trim for the Mustang as well for control mapping on your hotas.

I really miss rudder and aileron trim when flying the FW190.

Honestly I really do not use aileron trim that much... Traditionally, the P-51 is one of the few aircraft that actually had aileron trim, unlike its british and german counterparts.

Do you mean how to set them up in the mission editor or how to use the radio itself?

So... is there a way to setup many of the key/axis mappings to apply to 'all' the aircraft.. ie. I hate needing to then turn around and remap all the common controls when I want to fly the Dora

Thanks for the guide!

The "take off assistance" defaults to 100 with the Dora. Change tht to 0 and you will have a lot easier time getting off the ground, at least from my experience.

Yeah, I know it's an annoying process... For each aircraft you need to re-do this whole process.

Yeah I got the 190 today and discovered that none of the controls were mapped. I couldn't even open the escape menu.

Fantastic guide though. Absolutely invaluable until I manage to get the startup procedure totally memorized. Hoping you'll do one for the Dora at somepoint too as I've yet to even get the engine started in that thing.

I believe so but I read your post over on the DCS forums and downloaded your instructions also. It's a shame it interferes with Multiplayer though.

Strange ... I just got through Re-Mapping my controls but not clear what you mean by the escape menu. Do you mean escape back to the main menu? That should have worked. I've been getting some tutorage from DennyDd and though he says I'm doing fine, I think I have a ways to go. But it's a hell of a lot of fun .

Great guide. Thanks for this Chuck Owl.
Do you happen to use Facetracknoir, and if so, are you able to share the settings you use?
I have it up and running, but not very smoothly.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I mean the menu that comes up when you hit the escape key that lets you adjust controls and go back to the main menu. By default there was no key mapped to it so I had to alt+tab out of the game to leave the mission. Very odd. I'm assuming it's just because it's in beta still, since the P51 came with a full set of already-mapped default controls that I just had to tweak slightly to my preference.

Nor do i Chuck.

I might bite the bullet and purcahse a TrackIR as it might be easiest to use in CLOD, DCS, and FSX (fly A2A Spitfire).

Thanks for these guides Chuck.

This weekend i finally downloaded DCS World and using your guide i managed to get the TF-51D up to 35,000 ft and safely back again a number of times.

The clickable cockpits are great and give real feeling of simulation. The FM is also geat and i felt i was flying something with real substance.

Now i need to ask Santa nicely for the P-51D and the Dora! And try out multiplayer.

1 quick question:

Where does your mission for multiplayer extract to?

Thanks again Chuck.

You can put it anywhere you want, as long as you can navigate in the so-so file selector.

My default mission file location is generally here C:\Users\Charles\Saved Games\DCS\Missions
