The pictures raises some questions,
why is it that the B-17 on the left has not opened its bomb bay doors? I thought they followed the leader B-17 bomb drop signal to drop their bombs at the same time.
The right B-17 is a bit far for a "combat box" formation (but could also be that the gap is due to a plane gone missing).

I dunno about the colonials but it would be flares for the RAF at night. I suppose the bombs still have a lot of forward momentum in the picture, their target being some way in front?

Good grief, I almost convinced meself I was clever for a minute, that was two thoughts in quick succession on one subject, going for a lie down.
