View Full Version : Seeking a small number of concept testers for early draft ATAG mission candidate

Hi everyone,

I'm seeking a small number of testers to take a look at what i have done thus far re my mission that I'm hoping will get on ATAG sometime in the not too distant future. I don't yet have a title (working title is Sea Lion +30) and the strategic concept is here - http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12906.

I've now created a .mis file that has the following:

(a) All air bases created with spawn points (not yet fully tested though), Flak/AAA etc and aircraft assigned.
(b) All static tgt sets determined and static tgts created; these tgt sets include bomber airfields, airfields in enemy territory (Gatwick and Canterbury) bridges, railyards and docks (for Red only)
(c) Flak/AAA protection for these tgts
(d) Local weather created in likely focus points
(e) A concept for resupply missions to the bases in enemy territory that will add to the victory objectives - providing i can script it.

I've also - with Salmo's help - used his script that does random weather and time of day

I haven't started work on the random tgt sets yet (tank parks, ship convoys) and i have to learn C# scripting to figure that out. Start that tomorrow/this week - yeah yeah i was supposed to do that today but....

So what I'm seeking is several (maybe half a dozen) people who have some or all of the following skill sets and who are wiling to help me out:

(a) Are regular bomber and fighter pilots who enjoy flying high and low level bombing and potentially recce sorties and the usual range of fighter activities (furball thru to bomber escort/interception and even unarmed recce all accommodated in the mission design) - red and blue
(b) Have some knowledge of COD FMB and how it works - the .mis file is not finished or polished yet and to review it will require it to be used from within the FMB
(c) Are interested in mission design, including if possible some understanding of what is / isnt possible via use of scripts
(d) Have developed COD multi-player missions for ATAG or elsewhere
(e) Have some spare time and are willing to assist in the development of an ATAG non-historical (but historically representative sorta - ie Sealion +30 days) mission.

I've developed 2 x pdfs that go into more detail re the mission and the types of testing/feedback I'm interested in getting which i will send out to interested reviewers/testers along with the .mis and .cs files via PM/email.

I'm about to start working my way thru my C# for dummies book so that will take me away from the FMB for a week or 3 perhaps. Hence i thought i could use this FMB-down time to send out my .mis file and get it reviewed by interested people while I'm doing the C# thing. So I'm not looking for a quick turnaround re comments - maybe end of October but its flexible.

And given its my first COD mission I'm expecting i might be in for some major rework depending on the feedback i get - but i will learn from that if it happens and that is a good thing. For instance I've deliberately started big re the size of the mission and the available tgt sets knowing that this might be too big for an ATAG mission. But i figured it was OK to do this as I can always split it up into maybe 2 smaller missions down track if it does turn out to be too big.

Thanks in advance.

Ezzie

PS As a teaser - it will be possible (hopefully) for the Tiger Moth (RED) and Tiger Moth/Ju-87 (still to decide re which aircraft on BLUE will do this) to play a major role in helping roll the map in some scenarios.........

Great effort Ezzie old chap, very much appreciated.

I'm not flying at the moment so sadly can't help but I hope you get the support you need.

Sounds like great work so far. Like Septic, I can't fly until December but I'll try to help on the forums and in December when I get back if you still need it. I have some ideas about the SAR script which will be basically the same thing for your recon so I plan on trying to get that working. I'll share anything on the forums if I have a breakthrough.

I'm on a work trip for the next two weeks, but would be happy to assist anytime start 01-Nov-2014.

SM - will PM you soon with the pdfs even thought you cant do the .mis file stuff until later so you can see what I'm thinking. Keen to discuss your SAR scripting adventures with you as well.

Thanks Dietrich - like SM I will send you the pdfs shortly so you can see the ideas etc and then send you the .mis and .cs file once you are back and able to fly etc. If any of the other xvii members are interested and able to assist then I'm happy to pass the stuff to them as well - I've got your squad in mind for some of what I'm hoping to achieve re the Blue bomber side of things.

<snip> ... I'm about to start working my way thru my C# for dummies book so that will take me away from the FMB for a week or 3 perhaps. <snip>.........

I recommend you use MS C# Express 2010. It's free. See Kodiak's setup tutorial HERE http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=28997

Thanks Salmo.

I downloaded MS Visual Studio 2012 express earlier this week and got it going earlier today and followed Kodiak's set up and got mine looking like his.

I must admit it seems pretty daunting trying to learn all of this stuff. I had a quick squiz at the .dlls etc and all of the terms - is there a document that defines what each does or or is it trial and error re working out what they can do?

My way fwd from here is to start with a really simple mission (dog fight map with one aircraft at the moment) and figure out the basics of what is happening under the hood so that i can then learn how to use C# to access the stuff happening under the hood. Crawl before walk before run i guess. If i can get to crawl in the next week of so i'll be happy.

I expect i will have many more questions to come...

Thanks Saipan - i'll put you down to fly the map once i get it up and running re scripting etc. Might be a few weeks off but hopefully not too long.

Hi Ezzie

I would like to help but I have ZERO knowledge of anything mission building related. I can fly pretty much anything though, bomb high, low whatever. Don't know if that is any use to you.

Good luck, yeah it's going to be a 'fun' journey with some trial and alot of error:-)
What worked for me was reading ~first few chapters of a C# guide to get the hang of the principals- then start messing around with very small stuff.
While beggining it might be a good idea to have GPHudlog/server messages when 'events' occur
For further reading the old 1C fmb section has some good stuff

Here's some of the bits and pieces I've collected over the years- some of the examples might be good to play with/copy ideas? Also check out 'all methods list'

If there's one good piece of advice I can offer, it's to make sure that the first thing you do is create a debug output routine. Make it as simple, or complex as you want, but run EVERYTHING through it every time you change something. have it output to either the console or the gplog, rather than the HUD as if there's 2 messages at the same time, you'll never see the first one in the HUD.

I can post my debug output function when I get home if you want.

Thanks Bolox - really appreciate the advice and links which I will start reading shortly.

Unfortunately my PC has seemingly decided it doesn't like me using it and is not working as of last night. I was still getting the BSOD every so often but now it's almost continuous. I ran the Dell diagnostics routine and it crashed 3for 3 on the wireframe shading test so I think there's a problem with my card. Will have to get that sorted before I go much further down this journey <sigh>.

But I guess there's now more time to read about scripting huh?

Thanks

Ezzie

That would be much appreciated Reddog. This is one of the things I was struggling with -how to check what is happening when stuff is happening.

Thanks

Thanks Mindle. You are on my flying the map checking stuff out roster once I get the map further down the road. Just need to get my PC fixed. Was looking fwd to some Blennie hunting this morning but alas it seems my PC has other ideas.
