View Full Version : Team Fusion Update – October 17th 2014 – The Green, Green Grass of Home

Hi everyone, I know, you’re thinking…”hang on, it hasn’t been 4-weeks!?” Well, yes I do realise that but work is starting to progress a little faster now as members of team Fusion wave goodbye to the sunshine hand nestle down into their bunker and start getting creative again :)

So here goes with a selection of what is currently going on.

Today’s update mainly features further work on the landscape texture plates that cover the map of England. The work has been undertaken by one of our guys who is a real-life airline pilot and knows what summer looks like in the UK from all altitudes. This work is still exactly what we always say “Work in Progress” as there are still additions to be made to the plates, but current progress is so good we decided to share it with you.

You’ll see the difference in colour and quality in the comparisons shown in the video and also a comparison between TF v4.312, the Stock ‘un-modded’ Sim. and the new colour plates. It’s quite alarming when you see the original colours!

Today’s Video was due to be set to Tom Jones’s “Green, Green Grass of Home” but as the video was about to go live, Vimeo said it breached copyright and wouldn’t allow me to post it! Tom Jones not only fought Martians in “Mars Attacks” but also shot down this Friday’s update! True Legend!

Anyway, with some quick re-editing, here’s today’s video. The colours are matched to those we would expect to see around July at the start of harvesting time. The examples shown in the video are daytime lighting at 12.00pm and also evening at 7.00pm..

I’d like to add here a quote from RAF74_Buzzsaw in last-weeks’ thread for any of you who missed it:

“To everyone:

As MP has mentioned, we are working hard on a complex project... there are many, many elements to creating a new Campaign environment.

We have modellers working on 7 new or new versions of aircraft types, 5 new shipping types, 6 new vehicle/gun types, many building types, new map tool, plus all the sound, FM, texture, skins, etc. required to provide players with a complete immersive experience.

But just in aircraft, there are another 5 types which we would like to add and which could still use modellers... >>>> ...who know 3D modelling programs like 3DMax, so if you think you have the skills, or you know someone who does and who might be interested, please contact MP.”

We are on the lookout for 3D modellers to join the team, if you think you have the skillset and want to be part of our community based team, please check out this thread for more details. A knowledge of UV mapping is required though as this makes texturing the objects so much easier:

http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11129

So you can see, it’s not just a little bit going on, there is A LOT going on and even more than he is indicating of-course. If we told you everything, how on earth would I have updates to give you :salute:

Okay, in further news I’d like to explain the situation regarding the Ai and radio Commands.

As many of you know, I bang the drum behind the door at TF for Single players as I am pretty much in that group. I think you can count on one-hand the amount of times I play online, not because I don’t enjoy it, but because I just have fun in Single Player, setting up missions so I can play against Ai opponents. Now there is no denying that the Radio Commands are broken and that the Ai can be a little short in the ‘i’ part of the Ai, but let me explain this for better understanding.
Team Fusion have found around 90% of the code required to change the Ai and Radio Commands as it currently stands. Obviously that’s 10% shy of having a perfect amount but it’s not a simple case of “well just make the Ai do this when you press a button”. Sadly, it’s not like that :grrr:

At Team Fusion we have to be sure that any modifications we make don’t inherently break the game. Now, the last attempt at fixing Ai flight patterns, worked okay, but then required a hotfix as on occasions the Ai weren’t able to pull out of a dive at certain speeds.

This is because the Ai is tightly integrated with the flight model physics. This is a reason why if you said to the Ai, “If the enemy moves into this quadrant, perform a ‘rolling scissors’ manoeuvre. Now it’s easy to say that to an Ai, but then the Ai has to work out it’s altitude, speed, angle of attack, distance from enemy, if it’s under fire the position of the tracer, the Yaw, Pitch, deflection, etc., etc…….and it has to do this as quickly as you, the player, would to make it seem realistic that you are playing against a real person. Understand too, that it would then have to change its decision depending if all of those variables equal 1: Yes make manoeuvre 2: No don’t – Change routine to next option.

So due to the fact that the Ai is inherently bound into the Flight Model it will be necessary for our guys to open it up completely, strip out the Ai and FM to separate working areas and then rebuild it. Not forgetting that these will need to be the most secure of areas as no-one wants to hear about someone flying at 600 mph in a Stuka, not getting any damage and carrying 600 bombs!

The Ai and Radio Commands will be looked at, but as it stands there is no promise that they can make v5.00. That said our coding guru never ceases to amaze us but I thought I’d best outline the current state of play for the Single players out there!

Next, some work that has been created by another of our talented guys which is the addition of a few more variations in the player’s pilot look. This work has been necessary not only for adding a little more to the variations on which you can select, but also to learn how to change other characters in the Sim. that will allow us to add more accurate clothing to our troops on the ground in the new theatre :D

Pilot textures WiP:

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/Mysticpuma/Othernations1_zpsab1ba7c4.jpg (http://s277.photobucket.com/user/Mysticpuma/media/Othernations1_zpsab1ba7c4.jpg.html)

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/Mysticpuma/Othernations4_zps716ac737.jpg (http://s277.photobucket.com/user/Mysticpuma/media/Othernations4_zps716ac737.jpg.html)

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/Mysticpuma/Othernations2_zps64c91538.jpg (http://s277.photobucket.com/user/Mysticpuma/media/Othernations2_zps64c91538.jpg.html)

Work is now steadily increasing here but we are still a long way off as this patch will be a very important one to us. The creation of our Map Tool will make adding new theatres and locations radically easier for us all and this is currently our focus issue to make sure that we have that working perfectly and available to TF members to start adding map-packs which will be a huge advantage to us offering many new areas to fly over :flying2:

As always I’d like to include the latest news from the Bugtracker, kindly put together by Artist:

From the Team Fusion Bugtracker (http://tfbt.nuvturais.de)

(Feedback)

We invite all pilots to participate in the bugtracker either by reporting bugs, requesting features, and/or vote on issues. But before you do anything, please read the guidelines and FAQ here: http://tfbt.nuvturais.de/projects/il2clodtf/boards/4

I have no idea when the next update will be, but stay tuned as they could appear in another four-weeks...or maybe two-weeks (be sure :) )

Thanks a lot for a great and informative update.

Hard to believe the stock game land textures and colours looked so bad, the new ones look amazing. Thanks again for all the hard work that goes into this lot, I can't begin to imagine how long it all takes.

Cheers for keeping the dream alive.

TF rock.

Thanks chaps. I thought I'd better throw in the stock game comparison as I'm sure we would get messages that we had reverted back to how it was in the original game....when in fact as you can see...blimey...it was not that pretty :)

Hello Raptor, can you explain what you mean by "inconsistent trees" please.

Rather than "non-consistent" (or consisting of nothing), I think Raptor probably means "Unsubstantial" - i.e. trees with no collision doo-dah. (Please excuse my scientific use of jargon.)

Anyway, great to see progress on the hedgerow front! :salute:

Ty for the update and keep up the good work!!!
Really can wait to put my hands on TF5,0

PS feature request 1 the serious one! Do you think it will be possible in future to have a full patch (including also previous patches) instead of incremental? (is it possible to overwrite previous patches?)
this would help newbies and lazy people getting up to date! And since the more we are the better...
also an autoupdater could be a great idea to have more people.

feature request 2 the vain one! Do you think is it possible to have "personal face skins" as it was in old IL2?

Tree collisions is on the TF radar, but no solution found yet.

TF is building various map-making tool(s) (for in-house use) which are (right now) being used to construct the new theatre. TF5.0 *will* be all about the new theatre. There is a great deal of content already made or under construction for the new theatre that we can't show because it would disclose the theatre which we do not wish to do at this time. We want to present an integrated package that includes appropriate aircraft, ships, static objects, buildings, vehicles, armour, signage & much more ... etc.

Wow, a very nice update. Just wanted to point one thing out(don't kill me here, I understand this is a WIP). The old tiles had a lot of dead grass mixed in some of the green fields and it looks like the new tiles are losing a lot of that? Here are 2 pictures, one directly from the video and the other a real picture posted in this thread. I marked the areas I am speaking of. The only reason I am posting this is because IMHO, these areas of variance in color in a single field add to the realistic look COD has now. The new tiles look much cleaner, sharper and more colorful, I am just hoping TF will keep the variance in some of the fields so we don't just end up with different shades of green and contrasting tan(dead crop or grass representation) only. Thanks for your hard work, as usual TF is keeping COD alive and evolving and I am very thankful for that.

VERY NICE PHOTOREAL BRITISH GREEN GRASS !!!
awesome ! every real photo have that green ( in northern france Too ) .
I was always afraid by the green saturation in Aerofly Fs, but It is photorealistic.

I was waiting for that for a long time, tweaking sweetfx and saturation without such a result !!!

Thanks ! can't wait to grab it on my PC !

please it would be so kind to upload that patch in november, why waiting more ? !

sorry to say that, but on the video it doesn't looks so good in my opinion.
it looks more unnatural, more flashy.
I agree also with Blade remarks about tile details.
summer is also often time for hot haze and for that the 4.132 looks more realistic.
Okay, it is wip but I think it doesn't take a good trend.
I know maybe I am almost alone to think that, but I have to say.

I hope some constructive criticism is OK?

The criticism part;
I think the proposed changes to the land textures are not an improvement over existing. The transition screens in the video impress this point on me quite severely.

The constructive part:
If you must work on the existing-map textures (with the limited resources that TF has), I would recommend focusing your modding efforts on
1. The Autumn Map and its tree colouration - which is far too yellow/ red and looks nothing like Kent in Autumn. Manyof the fields remain pretty green all year round (except the tilled areas). And bright yellow and red trees are mainly found in the ornamental gardens. 90% of the vegetation remains green. This is a photo taken only a few days ago - in the middle of Autumn;
http://www.toothpicnations.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/P1050947-300x200.jpg

2. The winter map - which is quite grainy and pixelated looking. Less snow/ more brown and green earth. Yes, Kent is even quite green in winter for 90% of the time. It's not Canada or central north america.

Some more seasonal reference photos:

Bloody good to hear some work being done on AI and radio commands. Also, excellent that you're tidying up the pilot figures.
Would be great to see all of the AI crew-members replaced by figures wearing flying gear instead of their No3 -Dress uniforms! Seeing a peaked cap in a bomber cockpit makes me cringe every time. Even worse in a fighter!

The only reason I am posting this is because IMHO, these areas of variance in color in a single field add to the realistic look COD has now.

I also have the feeling that the wip fields look a bit too clean. The overall impression is very positive though. Thanks a lot for putting some love into the landscape!

Agree with others, I think the current textures are brilliant and look more realistic than WIP ones. The WIP ones are a bit too clean as mentioned in ones of the above posts and a bit too green, sort of like on artificially oversaturated postcards if you know what I mean. I also think colour perception is very individual thing, depending on the person and where one lives.

For me personally something strikes me as odd in the WIP scenes, they look a bit cartoonish compared to the current build if that's the correct word? Also, the trees in WIP look a bit too green perhaps? For me the current, darker trees look more realistic, but that may be a preception caused by the climate zone I live in.

Hi chaps, thanks for the feedback. YOU'RE ALL WRONG...HOW DARE YOU!!! :-P

But seriously :) , the texture tiles are work in progress and there are still features to be added. One feature that hasn't been added yet is the shader files that the game engine uses for so many things. This should affect the way it appears depending on altitude and distance and as yet this hasn't been implemented, so that should make a difference in the future appearance.

Regarding other comments on too clean and green, I know the thread will be read by our texture guy and so I can only say your opinions will be noted and we'll see what happens....I'm just the mouth inside the HQ of Team Fusion Towers, so I'll make sure your remarks are passed on :)

Glad you like the update so-far, we like keeping the community in the loop as we progress, cheers, MP

These colours indeed are correct for low altitude flight over France! With altitude things go much much more saturated/blue/grey but for low altitude these pictures are correct and accurate.

Ok, if comments are taken into consideration here is mine:

Your "WIP" is excellent!

Vanilla was cartoon like, actual is too dark (especially the woods).

Of course this only my opinion which is based on 100% subjectivity :P

Thanks guys

I also find new WIP textures a bit better. Current ones are a bit too dark and pastel like IMO, so little vibrance of green grass would be nice.
I understand the problem of making those textures to look good in a different lighting conditions and altitude.
But I never been there and photos can be made by using filters and post-processing, so I'll trust those who live there and fly over those fields.

Thanks a lot for the Update. Great news!

Keeping in mind that the new colour plates is a WIP, I just want to say I love the new colours , BUT the the variety of land textures seems to be less than in TF4.312. So I got the impression, that colour of the new palette is more authentic (to weather conditions in UK, for those in France I am not sure), but in general it is looking more sterile, because the number of coloured textures seems to be reduced, (a lot of green green grass) and they are looking more the same, while you got in the Stock & TF4.312 more different surfaces and vegetation IMHO. I could imagine that today's modern agriculture lets it look in that way, but in the 40s, I guess it has been different due to the more traditional way of agriculture & farming.
Saying this, I am doing my outcoming as a painter here & now, with a long expierience in doing landscapes, sometimes airborne :flying:

Again, thanks a lot for your work & efforts,
TG

Pardon, I should have read the entire thread before positing above.....

It seems most of the problem lies with tree colour. If you compare the trees on the photos you linked and the ones in WIP textures, you will notice the real ones are much darker, more resembling the 4.32 ones and contrast more with the environment. The trees in the WIP update seem way too bright green and blend in with the rest of the landscape making it look a bit artificial.

Also, the first photo of your is definately not summer unless there was some tree disease in the area that made them lose leaves :)

Indeed the first photo was added by mistake ;)
One problem with trees ingame is that if you want them to have the realistic bright green color up close they end up too bright at distance... This is WIP and far from finished and I am sure we will find a middle way. Tree colors will definitely change, no worries ;)

Climates, flora and fauna differ wildly, more so if you're on an island. Spot on, I live in the Southeast USA, Atlanta Georgia, and I have never been to England proper. Things here are just not that green and pristine looking. My apologies to the TF tile man, I was not trying to question your work. Also from Nottinghamshire, and I agree. Have lived in West Indies, East Africa, and currently Australia, and agree with the comment that living in other countries/climates does give one a different expectation of landscape colour. Every time i have returned over many decades, I have been repeatedly amazed at the vibrancy of the green flora particularly. It does strike me as almost cartoonish, but it is there in front of me. A young friend born out here, and with extensive experience of working up North in the Australian Rainforests (which by definition are green), told me that on her first trip to the UK, she spent hours each day after she first arrived, standing on any available highground just to soak up the brightness of the panorama. Out here we lose much of the vibrancy of a colour due to the harsh glare of the light. Only in the softer light of Spring can we identify the real colour (speaking of landscape of course, not curtains).

I think you are on the right track TF.

Thanks for the hard work guys.

Just to add for consideration for all of us when viewing these WiP changes;
When dealing with issues of color remember there will never be consensus as each individual perceives color quite differently from the next.
Throw into the fray the myriad of monitors people are using (and tv's) each with their own level of calibration/settings and its a bit of a mine field to navigate for sure.

Its so subjective, and even with photographs of a scene it can vary, with some photographs having been post processed for effect.
Even the same scene viewed from the same vantage point on 2 different days can look quite different (even hours apart) just by the ambient atmospheric conditions.

My own take is that it does indeed look like progress in the right direction.
Be cautious though not to stray into the space of 'over saturation' which will have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve.

Thanks again.

2. The winter map - which is quite grainy and pixelated looking. Less snow/ more brown and green earth. Yes, Kent is even quite green in winter for 90% of the time. It's not Canada or central north america.

...that probably depends on whether Clod is modelling the start or end of 1940. The winter of 39-40 was one of the worst winters in UK history and not only would the whole of Kent been totally covered by snow but also the Thames was frozen.

HMS Rodney or Nelson, functionally the same from the same class. Unique in that they had 9 16" Guns, in three turrets forward. This was out of character for two reasons, as the Royal Navy had primarily used 15" guns in their large capital ships to that point, and they had no aft large caliber guns.

Both ships are very different looking than their counterparts of WWII.

1. How many days
2. How many missions are actually flown in these conditions

If you are British, you will know what happens here when snow falls and, relative to the length of winter, how many days have full snow cover. An exceptional winter in Kent would see no more than 2 weeks snow cover out of 3 months of winter. Much more common is frost coating, but even more common is the type of scene which Philstyle posted and low cloud no flying days.

One thing we don't see is winter smog. Britain was coal powered in 1940 and thick yellow smog was very common in the south east (it never occurs today). Pilots used cathedral spires and hilltops to find their way about - it's in a lot of biographies.

For the ones who are too lazy to click on the link above. Here are some comments from Brits on the BOS forum.

1.England is exceptionally green during the summer.
As a resident of Nottinghamshire, I can assuredly tell you that this new update looks so much more like the England I love during the summer!

2. The summer of 1940 was unusually hot and dry, but the new work certainly looks a lot like the rainy England I've flown over a few times.

3. I've shared the video with quite a few folk now. Every one from England has commented on the accuracy of the colours, including a chap who lives in Sussex!

4. Add another to the list, I see it from the air quite a lot too.

5. I work in farming in kent, colours much much better, awesome update to the map.

6. I think its great. I think the colours are more correct. As has been said above, if you're flying into Britain the first impression is how green everything is.

I particularly like the way field sizes have been reduced. Pre-war farming lacked modern, powerful tractors and equipment and agriculture - especially in Kent and Sussex - still reflected field patterns put down in the early eighteenth century.

Good job.

Somehow there seem to more brits on the BOS forum.
On the to do list is, more grey haze with an increase in altitude. We still want a bright summer landscape when at low altitude but saturated grey/blue with altitude. Trees will also have more variation and not the same colour, perhaps a bit darker with distance but this might come automatically with more grey/blue haze with distance/altitude.

Who better is there to judge the English landscape then Englishmen and to top that even some English farmers working in the specific area? You seem to be on a very good way, congratulations!

To me it is not the wip colours (I like the increased saturation!) but the wip textures of the fields that I am wondering about. I would love to see some more heterogenous, "dirtier" fields, meaning not so much a field coloured perfectly with one colour but with some traces of farming, a different ground structure, etc.

Either way, very interesting to see how such a topic can result in so much responses. I doubt that there would have been more comments if TF had announced the Me 262 as new plane in the upcoming patch. :D

Variation of colors certainly can be added and maybe should, but actually British June-July landscape does not have as much variation in its green color as many seem to think. In June-July most of the grass has turned green and most of the spring grey brown is gone.
Notice this google map summer picture and how homogenic it is in its green colors. In general google map is not so good as a source as most of the UK seems mapped in spring or autumn.

I think the new colors (or maybe you prefer "colours") are a terrific improvement. I agree about the trees needing to be darker, but that has already been addressed. I was also glad to read that I'm not the only one who thinks the river systems look like huge river deltas from altitude. That makes it difficult to use them as navigational guides.

As an aside, great job on the video production demonstrating the WIP updates. The split screens made the changes very clear. I'm sure that all took a lot of work in and of itself.

Finally, thanks so much for donating your time to make this the best WWII flight sim available. It's a testament to your dedication that your unpaid work is head and shoulders above the other offerings on the market. Salute!

Yes, some more of those "ruffles" - especially if you fly on lower altitudes - would be nice. I marked some of them on the (I have to admit very homogeneous) image:

I think it is those ruffles that make the landscape even more come to life.

This is one hell of an awesome update. Love the new colors. I've always tried to judge colors in games compared to real life, but it's really really hard to do so because so many factors come in in real life. Clouds, angle and intensity of the sun, haze levels. etc. So colors change a lot even during the course of a single day, while in CoD we bascically have to find the perfect blanace being true to most conditions. Still, the new tiles are a huge improvement re atmosphere.

But out of pure curiousity, if you guys already are at the map....will there be any changes/improvements to the weather system? That eternal summer weather is perfectly done, but the variation is a bit lacking here...especially typicall european overcast is sorely missed.

I am absolutely delighted with the TF 5.0 terrain upgrades. In my part of Canada (an hour's drive SW of Toronto) by mid-July all our lawns are burnt brown due to lack of rain and city watering restrictions. This year has been extraordinarily wet and relatively cool (low 70's and virtually no 90+ dog day afternoons). As a result, I would guess our recent summer closely resembled the norm for the Kent countryside. Everwhere is GREEN. Here's a shot I just took from my (dry) deck of two (wet) dogs standing in the rain in mis-October. Everywhere is still GREEN!!!

Looking good. I'm especially glad about the info regarding new planes.

As an aside, in England July at 19:00 it is still very light. I'm guessing it is dark in the video because that's what the game engine says it should look like?

While making the video, I just needed to test how it looked at different times to show the variation. Wasn't really thinking about the date when I set up the mission as it was more about the tiles...I'll keep it in mind next-time

Good to hear that you're not limited by code understanding anymore. Shame I'm no longer part of TF as I think I could have offered something at this stage. Still, I am sure you will deliver an outstanding end product.

Hey Snapper - just for grins could you maybe retake this photo in the middle of your winter? We dont get much snow down here and I've not made it to Canada in the middle of your winter yet (October is the latest i've been in your neck of the woods) and I'd be curious to see the difference. Might cure me of wanting to visit in your winter.........

Kling

Hi Kling,

I haven't really commented on the Summer map, more the winter/autumn ones. It is worth saying though that the weather in the South East is different to other parts of the UK. Nottinghamshire is the next place in line to receive the rain from a Summer weather front after it's initial dump of rain in the West and Wales. In short, it's going to be greener because it's just quite a bit wetter. Kent is called "The Garden of England" for good reason, it's so close to the continent that it spends much of the summer pinching the East French weather, protected from those fronts. The number of times I've driven East from a cloudy and rain soaked Gloucestershire into Surrey, that's only 100 miles) and watched the rain stop, the sun come out and the temperature rise 5 degrees is phenomenal. In short, it's drier and in Summer is much more yellow and brown than during the winter - lots of arable farming rather than grass fields for herds of sheep and cattle. That said I am not bothered a jot, the hedgerow solution is what really captures the eye here for me, all of those tight winding country roads bordered by dark hedges. This has more impact to make it look like England than a colour change.

IMHO Philstyle had it bang on in his first post about the autumn and winter though.

yes I know exactly how this very area looks.. I fly over it weekly ;)

Yes, atop the Malvern Hills :)

About 15 miles from me :)

OK so you get the same crappy weather as I do, I'm in a Cotswold's opposite - not sure if you are looking my way from that paronamic. Just be aware that Surrey/Sussex/Kent IS drier, like East Anglia, and they do a lot more arable there (hell you guys should see Duxford from the air - it's all beige for miles from the wheat fields)

Ah! Of course, it's been that long I forgot :)

When a new theatre appears it may make sense to just rename IL2 Storm of War, it's generic and means you can also turn to land and sea should you wish to.

"Not forgetting that these will need to be the most secure of areas as no-one wants to hear about someone flying at 600 mph in a Stuka, not getting any damage and carrying 600 bombs!"

Hermann Goering would have loved to hear about it.

I, on the other hand, am encouraged to hear that modding the AI is still at least being considered. It's the only reason I don't fly COD any longer.
I keep it on my hard drive, and there it will remain until TF gives the AI their magic touch.
Looking forward eagerly to that day-
Cheers,
Chris

This will be a added! Together with darker trees! IE. Less neon green ;)

But just to be clear.. England in july is exceptionally green and most of the dead grass is gone... A lot of people living in the UK say this is very close to how it actually looks in july. Check attached real life pictures and videos further up in the thread.
Saying that, variation never hurts! ;)

Very glad to see a representation of hedgerows in the new textures, albeit only in 2D. It will make a big difference to see that very distinct feature of the S. English countryside, so well done for putting them in, it must have been a big job to change all the textures!

Eh, when I flew in to the Duxford flying legends this year (An-2) i've seen a lot of different colors. Even Lavender fields around Southend-on-Sea. Most of the trip was a bit foggy and we had to cross the Channel pretty low.

But you were spot on about the wheat fields.

Hmm it seems that the images won't show up...

Mystic,

Will the new Map tool allow someone to go back and fix the road routes on the current map where there are no bridges or the roads don't go thru towns causing the AI ground units to stop moving?

The WIP colors look great!

Thanks

When ready, the map tool should allow doing anything map related, this included.
