View Full Version : Dunkirk Mission?

Having no experience in building multiplayer missions I'm going to throw this idea out there and hope some talented individual in the community runs with it. I think a Dunkirk style mission would be quite fun and be a change of pace with the action centered over France.

Red Planeset: Spitfire I, Spitfire Ia, Hurricane (DH 5-20), Hurricane (Rotol), Blenheim IV
Red Airfields: Southern England (Lympne, Hawkinge, Manston, etc..)
Red Objectives: Destroy Panzer & Truck columns, Destroy German fleet moving up the coast towards evacuation fleet. German fleet consists of a few Minensuchboot (rookie skill) & tankers.

Blue Planeset: Bf 109 E-1, Bf 109 E-3, BF 110 C-4, JU-87 B-2 (Inclusion of JU-88 & Bf 110 C-7 up for debate)
Blue Airfields: Airfields in Southern France that have equal flight time to main target area as Red team. Tramecourt and points south?
Blue Targets: Destroy evacuation fleet (consists of tankers, minensuchboots (skill level?), fishing boats, motor boats, etc.)

Where the targets are placed is open for discussion as I don't know if using Dunkirk proper will work. Wissant might be a better location and be kinder to framerates. What I like about this mission is that it's more of a meeting engagement and the action should be mostly centralized around the beachhead with Blues trying to destroy ships and Red going after panzers, trucks, arty. For somebody to vulch they are really going to have to go out of the way. Plus I think this would work quite well with the games in it's current state. There could be AI flights of bombers that come over every so often and drops bombs on the town or AI recon flights that show up unannounced. Thoughts?

This sounds a great mission but I have no idea how difficult it would be to script? I am of course hopeful that the patch (in two weeks I understand?) will allow the mission builders some more freedom to produce more complex missions, I only wish I could used the FMB.

I would look forward to that. I love the idea of Dunkirk, even though we got our arses kicked.

Great idea notafinger! I'd suggest using only de Havilland propeller fighters for the RAF.

I'm would like to move this idea forward but I would need some assurance from ATAG that the mission would be put into rotation. I can work on the laying out the objects and everything in FMB but would need somebody to add the coding if you want AI bombers and all of that stuff. Is ATAG interested?

I seem to recall Bliss saying that there was already a Dunkirk mission being worked on some time ago, but that we'd need 'the patch' to be released first owing to it being a little resource hungry.

The whole Dunkirk situation is ideal for what we have now, and come the day we have armour to drive and guns to man, even better.

Gets my vote anyway.

After almost 6 months of talk and several days this week in the FMB I have just sent what is hopefully a working version of a Dunkirk like mission off to Bliss. In gameplay terms it is very similar to the missions we've been enjoying on ATAG for the last year or so with something to do for both bomber & fighter jocks. It just focuses on a different part of the channel map from what we are all used to. Bombers will have sea & ground targets to blast and fighters will have the never boring AI bomber groups to engage. I've included a lot more "soft" targets so even the fighters can ground pound if there is no air action. Plane selection will be a little different from the norm but I think most everybody will be happy with the choices especially considering the rising popularity of the DH Spits & Hurricanes. For the flak fearing this mission features much more large caliber (black puffs) and much less of the uber deadly small caliber (white puffs) except over player bases. To vulch in this mission you will have to fly twice as far as usual as the player spawns are equal distances from objective areas along the French coast. I'll post a video later showing a fly over of the evacuation beach which I hope captures the chaos of Dunkirk without killing FPS. Hopefully, it will find it's way to the server sooner or later and that you all enjoy it.

Hey Notafinger!,

Send it to me also if you like and I will put it on Server 2 for testing tonight when I get home. I don't know how much time Bliss has to do it.

Up to you anyway :) Look forward to flying it.

Got the mission but will have to wait till Monday to set up the objectives/scripts for the server. I'm TDY away from home atm and didn't feel like taking the desktop with me for a short trip.

But it will get on there. Looking forward to getting it all set up :) :) :) :)

As promised here is a short little video preview I put together. If you ever wondered how many bomb explosions the game engine will display at one time, you're about to find out. :devilish:

I recommend watching in 1080p HD, enjoy.

Looking forward to this one hugely. One of the first offline missions I built with the game was a Dunkirk scenario. There'll be no cries of 'Where's the Action?' in this one, you'd think!

Thanks notafinger.

Fingers crossed it works ok.

I'm really glad to hear people are excited for this, I hope it doesn't disappoint.

To wet the appetite some more here is a preview of red/blue briefings with some target photos for the bomber guys.

[Army Red]

June 1, 1940 - Dunkirk

Listen up gents! Our backs are against the wall. The German attack through the Ardennes has caught us by complete surprise. The French government is near collapse and our army is cut-off and being pushed into the sea. Anything that floats is being pressed into service in a desperate attempt to save what men & equipment we can. God knows we are going to need them to defend in England in the weeks & months ahead. Oddly enough the panzers have halted their attack so it's imperative we act now.

Fighter Command Orders

- Establish air superiority over the evacuation convoy (F12-H12) and beachhead (I11.8). A convoy is crossing the channel to get our boys off the beach near Dunkirk. You fighter jocks need to do everything in your power to protect the convoy and the beachhead.

- Intercept enemy air raids on the Dunkirk perimeter. We expect waves of Jerry bombers & dive bombers to keep the beachhead under constant attack. Ground controllers will vector you to any raids that appear.

- Finally, Bomber Command is going to be very active in the area so help out where you can. There are plenty of soft targets in the area that those 8 x Brownings will put a hurt on.

If you run into trouble try to ditch near the beach and catch a ride home.

Bomber Command Orders

- A strong Kreigsmarine force is moving up the coast of Boulogne (E6-E10) to intercept our evacuation fleet. All Royal Navy assets in the area are busy with the evacuation so we've been tasked with destroying this force.

- German armoured & motorized columns have stopped their advance towards the beachhead for unknown reasons. At any time they could push forward and storm the perimeter. There is an armoured column on the road North Of Marquise (F9.9), a motorized infantry column near Watten (J10.1), and a panzer formation near Wormhout (L10.4).
982 983 984

- If that's not enough to keep you busy aerial reconnaissance has discovered a Jerry artillery battery NE of Licques in a forest clearing (H9.5) that is causing heavy damage on the beach. Silence those guns.
989

[Army Blue]

June 1, 1940 - Dunkirk

Total victory is near & our humiliation from 1918 will soon be avenged. Our panzer forces have the English trapped in a pocket around Dunkirk and it is only a matter of time before they are thrown into the sea. In a last ditch effort the British are using a ragtag fleet of fishing vessels and motor boats to save their army from total annihilation. Our Fuhrer has halted the Wehrmacht so that we, the Luftwaffe, can have the honor of crushing the English on the beach. Lets prove that we are up to the task and show the world what airpower can do. Hals und beinbruch!!

Bf 109 / Bf 110 Orders

- Establish air superiority over the beachhead. (I11.8)

- Provide air cover for Wehrmacht tank/infantry columns (F9.9, J10.1, L10.4) & Kreigsmarine units (E6-10)

- The British have been foolishly sending bomber waves over in daylight to bomb our supply areas around Boulogne & St Omer. Ground control will keep you informed when these raids are picked up.

- If aerial targets fail to present themselves use your machine guns & cannon to strafe British shipping involved in the evacuation (F12-H12). Your armament might not be effective against the larger vessels but the smaller civilian craft will be blown to bits.

- There are plenty of targets of opportunity inside the beachhead. Make high speed strafing runs and dont loiter as every British gun in France is trapped on that beach.

Ju 87 / He 111 / Ju 88 Orders

- Destroy English shipping in the Channel. A convoy has been spotted North of Calais heading for Dunkirk (F12 H12). It is a mixed fleet of military & civilian vessels that should not be taken lightly. The destroyer escorts are particularly deadly to low flying aircraft. Use Ju 87s to deliver pin-point attacks on these ships or use He 111s & Ju 88s to area bomb from medium altitude. Low level attacks will result in heavy losses until the escorts are destroyed.
985

- Destroy the British HQ Command Post (I11.8). Reconnaissance has identified several buildings w/ radio mast near the beachhead that we believe are used for C&C in the British evacuation effort. Knock out their command and those trapped on the beach will panic.
986

- Destroy RAF Hurricanes grounded at Calais-Mark (H11.5). Radio intercepts indicate the British are withdrawing all of their air groups from France. Weve spotted a Hurricane squadron on the ground awaiting orders. The British could try to evacuate this squadron at any moment so speed is critical. Destroy the aircraft on the ground & the pilots quarters.
987

- Destroy British armoured column (J11.8). The English are pulling their defenses from Dunkirk back to the beach. The column was last reported East of Loon-Plage. Find and destroy it.

Last night on Dunkirk the blue side got to 9 out of 15 tankers down. I think it was =22= or something that sunk 2 tankers but no increase in number sunk, and later I sank at least 2 more and it still stayed at 9 out of 15. I could not find anymore tankers to hit before I died.

Thanks!

Hi Torric,

Thanks for the feedback. Ruling out a possible scripting error I would say a common mistake I see is that people are bombing the wrong ships. The ships that are right off the beachhead area are not objectives. They are more or less just there for scenery and to bring some life to the beaches. The actual objectives are a group of ships that start mid channel and finish a mile or so offshore of the beachhead. More than likely a ship got stuck making the trip across the channel. In version 1.2 of the mission I eliminated this problem as the convoy will now start off the coast and just stay there as they weren't able to consistently keep formation moving across. Unfortunately, I don't think Bliss has had a chance to put the new version up yet. Also, there are more than just tankers in the convoy. There are 4 destroyers (minensuchboot) included in that 15 total. I believe Bliss included in the script some wiggle room in case one or more ships get bugged and don't sink so that you don't have to sink all 11 tankers + 4 destroyers to complete the objective. Hope that clears things up.

Doc
Oct-17-2012, 11:15
The Minensuchboot 1935 is waging its own war out there! It sank several fishing boats. Poor bastards were probably just trying to land a big Blue Marlin or a Drum and now this happens.

Torric270
Oct-17-2012, 12:28
They were the ships a couple klicks off the coast, I also sank 2 destroyers and they didn't count either, hopefully new version will clear it up.

Thanks!
