Ultimate General is actually a relatively simple Civil War game.

The most complex tactical level games designed to simulate the American Civil War are the TAKE COMMAND, and SCOURGE OF WAR series.

Incredibly detailed and incredibly demanding... for a comparison to Flight Sims, think DCS or CoD.

It's tough to manage a single division, let alone a Corps or an entire Army.

TAKE COMMAND was recently selected as one of the 100 greatest games of all time... SCOURGE OF WAR is the updated version.

How does it compare to total war in your opinion?

I play it regularly and I'm having tons of fun with it. Even with multiplayer :)

Think of it as Sid Meier's Civil War rather than a Total War game.

Ah. I really enjoy the total war series, but I really wish they would increase the unit counts so you could have full scale battles.

Yes, the Total War series Napoleonics is completely ahistorical... instead of battles with 50,000-100,000 troops, you are limited to around 2,000 per side.

Total War is really only accurate for the smaller 100 years war Middle Ages type of battles... even the Roman era saw more often 20,000 - 50,000 troops per side.

I got this on the steam sale, didn't have the time to try it out yet, it looks good though - and fun fact it was made by a guy who started out modding Total war games. Inspiration for the future perhaps...? :D

General sentiments are good about this game, even though it isn't a simulation. My guess the realism will be akin to Wargame series - just enough to get you interested and draw you in.

Regarding Total war, I don't think the Warscape engine (Napoleon) can handle 20,000 let alone 50-10,000 models on the battlefield. I doubt any engine can as long as graphics and immersion are important. For that reason I love grand strategy games like HoI 3, where you can leave the actual battle to imagination :)

However for small scale ww2 eastern front battles - if anybody is interested, this gem awaits those ready to conquer the somewhat offputing UI:

TAKE COMMAND and SCOURGE OF WAR can handle 50,000 men per side, with the games rendering regimental size units, with 1 soldier figure representing approx. 20 men.

There is a mod for this series for Napoleonic and American Revolutionary War battles.

As mentioned, it is a real challenge to try to control this number of soldiers and units, which is why the AI works so well... you can give more general orders to the Corps or Divisional level commanders and the AI will execute them... or you can manually control all the units right down to the individual regiments.
