View Full Version : Team Fusion Update April 27th 2015 - A little bit of everything

Okay, well as the title suggests, this weeks video update shows a few of the features TF are working on. I could list everything in the video....but hey....watch the video :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBxOQe99Vv8&feature=youtu.be

Okay, so now you've watched the video, we were as surprised as you when the Millennium Falcon popped up...but hey, plan for the future, that's what TF say!

Alright, calm down, that's why I said watch the video and you'll know the above comment was mischievous.....or was it? :devilish:

Now, embarrassingly...I have to own up to a mistake on my part and that is that some of the sounds you heard are incorrect (or not the latest version) and so my next update (if our sound editor is still speaking to me) shall include revisions of those effects. I'm not going to.list which they are but some are not the latest version and that's on me......so apologies.....but it means I have something at-least for the next update to show you, although the video further down this post should compensate a little?

Here is another short video posted by Slipstream showing some more audio work:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLKsI-he6uw

The next update will be a few weeks away so hopefully the amount of content in the video will be enough to keep the community talking for a while. Steadily the sum of all parts are coming together and while testing the mods (and creating them) is sometimes a real pain.....blimey it's cool to see some of the stuff our guys are creating behind the scenes :)

As always I'd like to say thanks to Artist for his work on the Bugtracker, news of which he has compiled here:

From the Team Fusion Bugtracker (http://tfbt.nuvturais.de)

The bugtracker (http://tfbt.nuvturais.de/projects/il2clodtf) keeps accumulating data: Since the last published update on March, 27th, 17 new users brought the total up to 879 registered users of which 89 have been active since then. ===

Now, it's always important for us to mention that this is a community based project. All members of TF are just 'normal' Flight-Sim enthusiasts like yourself and from that community we are always on the lookout for new members to join our team especially those of you with the ability to work with 3D modelling software.

Please check out this link if you think you may be able to help with creating new objects for Mission Builders and Pilots to build with (and destroy!):

Don't forget that we have a Facebook page and you may just see some exclusive pictures over there, so if you have a Facebook account, why not 'Like' our page and check in to see some more Team Fusion exclusives (even Oleg Maddox has liked our page!)

https://www.facebook.com/teamfusionmod

Finally I'd like to bring to the communities attention the following.

Chuck_Owl has created a great User Guide for Cliffs of Dover and it really is worth a visit no-matter if you are a beginner or an experienced pilot. It can be found here:

So there you go chaps. See you next time, cheers, MP/TF

The pixelation is down to the recoding of the original video. The way this happens is some of the guys work on their effects/features/mods and then share the videos with me. Due to the time I have available I sometimes don't have access to the files to reshoot the video and so I use their original and slot it into the one I am preparing. The original video is stunning but youtube just wont do it justice.....the tracer from the Bofors is glorious in the original....and I only saw the footage this-morning but felt I had to share it.

Hope that explains it and by way of an apology....have a bonus couple of pictures :) Cheers, MP

Those bofors tracers are the closest to reality I've ever seen in a game. I must admit they bring up some very disturbing memories that I try not to conciously acknowledge.
Very, very very well done.

My thoughts: The current .303 gun sounds are amazingly close to that of the resurrected Spitfire Browning that was test fired in a field. But I suspect the sound of 8 Brownings hard-mounted in the wings arrayed on each side (estimated) 4 to 8 feet away from the confines of a closed cockpit would sound quite a bit differently. It's a bit difficult to tell with the very short bursts depicted in the video (vs an extended burst for evaluation purposes), but the TF 5 version certainly sounds a bit more "robust" IMHO.

Yes, I thought the sound was more like cannon too, but I could not see cannons visible on the Spit wing and the damage to the 109 did not look much like cannon fire to me. We seem to have lost the sound like "ripping dry paper" that is reportedly the sound of the machine guns when fired. Seems like we are now hearing more individual rounds with too much space for the extremely rapid firing Spit and Hurry guns.

Perhaps it is the new sound for the cannons to come, but without showing the cannons visually.

Great Update Guys!
I thought I saw a working mirror on the Spit. I'd given up on that fix.
Please confirm?

ATAG_Lolsav
Apr-27-2015, 10:50
Its confirmed johson, althought still a bit fps hungry by what i read.

If not attempted by Team Fusion i would suggest what is done on other games to reduce fps hungriness: Reduce to half the fps on the mirror?

Very nice! :D

Stupid question though... is it me or the Beaufighter seems incredibly slow to accelerate on takeoff? Maybe it's just me... but when I takeoff with a bomb payload on a Blennie I use even less runway than that...

Mysticpuma
Apr-27-2015, 11:14
Chaps, firstly thanks for the feedback.
The German pilots look grumpy because their new Jumo and other engine sounds (plus more) were not showcased......I mean, come on Mysticpuma is obviously British and biased...I'd cry fowl :)

Now, embarrassingly...I have to own up to a mistake on my part and that is that some of the sounds you heard are incorrect (or not the latest version) and so my next update (if our sound editor is still speaking to me) shall include revisions of those effects. I'm not going to.list which they are but some are not the latest version and that's on me......so apologies.....but it means I have something at-least for the next update to show you :)

Okay, so here's some information on the mirror. It is a complete workaround and was/is being a real PIA! For those of you who saw the original "Vanilla" game mirror, you'll know it showed a super pixellated image and that it was pointed at 45 (ish) degrees away from the aircraft,so showed nothing behind you and then it looked like a low resolution image from Minecraft!

So the current fix for the mirror now shows what is behind the aircraft but to save fps, it only renders every 3rd frame. It does look a little jittery.....but.....as we try and make a compromise between no mirror and the severely hit fps (as the game is rendering what you see twice) the 'render every third frame in the mirror' seems to be a fair compromise.

There is obviously lots of other features showcased in the video.....but apologies again for some of the sounds not being the latest version.......but the Beaufighter certainly is the latest version as it came directly from our sound editor :)

Cheers, MP

Sounds off to me Snapper. 8 x mg at 120 to 150 rounds per second should sound more like "blowing a raspberry" LOL, :-P

In the clip, the Spit guns do not sound like they are firing much faster that the much, much, slower firing Bf 109.

Apr-27-2015, 11:30
I am wondering, are each of the 8 303s modelled individually in the sound department, or is there a generic sound file for all 8 guns?

In the first case, getting one gun right should automatically make all guins sound pretty accurate when fired in unison.

Either way, awesome update, darn british biased one, but still awesome

What do you think chaps, 2 days off without pay for the Mystic man?! Unforgivable!!! :stunned:

In terms of the mirror, i have heard (correctly or incorrectly) that the mirrors tended to vibrate a lot, so some jumping around might just be adding to the realism. Sure looking forward to that addition.

Supposed to be like "heavy cloth tearing" by all reported pilot accounts.
Current TF4.0 version is very close but perhaps a bit "heaver-deeper" would be closer.

The current video makes one question if there is indeed a Hispano being fired but I didn't see the barrel extensions in the wing.

Can't wait for the Beaufighter. Would make me switch to my favourite role of close ground attack with the heavy firepower.

And the gun sounds are like everything, are W.I.P. There is a good chance that by TF5 they'll have changed again. To the sound of a high compression air gun! :)

MysticPuma, you have no need to apologise, the fault is with me and my bad video editing again.

Like MP says, we'll get back to the sounds when I've learnt to tie my shoelaces, but until then, I was going to a quick preview of some Spitfire or BF-109 sounds. But because we are so bias to the English and Germans, here is some love for the Italians and their wonderful little G.50. (with sound more G.50's, BF109's and Spitfire's thrown in the soup.)

Understood, but i still want to give my feedback on the sounds.

88mm = like it, has a good punch
109 guns = please no, no.
Spit guns = do not sound like 8 mg, more like a gun.

Edit: checked your G50 video. What happened to the sound there? Did you record with an external microphone?
Is this a new german ground control voice or is it sound distortion?

Hi Skylon

Thanks for your comments,

I'm just one of the sound designers on the team, so any feedback must be considered by all. Also any thanks goes to all who put in their free time to do this, as is the case with all the modders in Team Fusion.

The reason all this work is marked as "Work in progress" is because a lot of the stuff you hear hasn't been mixed, mastered or had any effects applied to it. Also the quality of the sound you hear on the video isn't necessarily what you'll eventually hear in the game.

Nothing has changed with the voices, they sound like a radio transmission as always and the G.50 engine sounds crystal clear to me on the video.

OMG! Map Tool!

Does this mean people can now make maps and add them to CoD (for single player as well as MP) in the same way as has been done for years with IL2 1946?

If so, I can't wait for some maps outside of the Channel area.

Just to let everyone know:

Regarding the Sounds, Slipstream can go into more detail, but the real big advance we have made is not entirely audible to the listeners... but hugely affects our ability to program sound.

The big step forward is gaining access to and complete control of the game's digital soundbank. This is the total envelope which controls and modulates all sound in the game, and once we have this tool at our disposal, we can much more precisely program sounds. Sounds can be added, switched, etc. much more easily now.

The sounds in this update are mostly samples and experiments, the important thing to remember is we can make changes fairly simply now, and we can be very precise.

a) WIP
b) Some things depend on others.
c) Is not easy to compile a release.
d) Is not worth adding yet another release to the list of files to install.
e) A release means having to provide support on it. Providing support means less time to work on the new features.
f) If a release is made with, say, only textures, some people will complain.

If I remember correctly at time is said that MS CFS1 use sound recorded from real guns - probable from Browning .30 as .303.

Many hated them at start, i remember that. For me it wasnt love at first sight, but it grown fast. I also assume i do like them as they are. Brrrrrrrrrrttttt.

The new sound of the guns isnt bad at all, just the opposite. It is good. The sound is a bit muffled by the cockpit (which is a nice touch), that i noticed and without knowing how true one or the other is (im tottally ignorant there), the "Brrrrttt" seem to have personnality. Its like a devil kitten :devilish:

Very interesting update, as well as follow up clips and comments. Thank you!

Very excited about the progress made on the sound bank. A part of me hope we can at some point in the future be able to add our own sounds as well. Even so, the clips here show great and exciting progress and that last G-50 clip with the raging dogfight was like music to my ears.

OMG! Map Tool!

Does this mean people can now make maps and add them to CoD (for single player as well as MP) in the same way as has been done for years with IL2 1946?

If so, I can't wait for some maps outside of the Channel area.

The map tool (+56k lines of code so far, countless weekends and a few trash it and start all over) is for TF use only. Anyway, you can't just put a map and make the game pick it up so it has to come as part of an update.
On the other hand, the map tool is there to allow TF to do just that, create new scenarios. Once completed creating new maps from scratch should be a LOT faster than it is now.

Really great and exciting work!!! It is nice to hear the skin being impacted by flak!

FYI - here is a cool and recent video of a recovered gun from a crashed Spitfire being fired after spending 70 years in the ground. Hard to say what one would have sounded like from inside with the sound coming through the airframe, the engine roaring, the canopy closed and all the ammo links rattling in their tracks.

I think the TF sounds can't get any better to a match to this. I think the new sounds sound too "arcadey". But the 109 sounds (for the MGs at least) sound awesome.

I did this quick&dirt "highly professional" test, record - with Windows sound record - the sound of this"archaeological" .303, open in Audacity, create more 7 bands, each one with the same sound with slight delay from the other. Reproduced all 8 simultaneous and record the output with Windows sound record. The result in the zip.

I'm really surprised how close you have got this sample to the current CoD Spit/Hurri sound of the guns firing, to me it shows just how close TF have got it. As someone else stated, people have been fooled by Hollywood just how a gun does/should sound.

Indeed, they are similar- but as has been pointed out above- it would not sound like that from the cockpit at all. The sound would plant itself in the airframe and resonate, blend as well as be partially drowned and mixed by the engine roar. I am no expert- but I think it that would make quite a difference. Nevertheless- all is WIP and on the right track:)

I have spoken with Art Fiedler a P-51 Ace of the 325th Fighter Group flying P-51's. This is his description of the sound of guns from the cockpit.

"Machine gun sounds: My recollection was that when all 6 guns fired, it was more of a roar. I do not remember ever hearing the sound of individual rounds. It was said the rate of fire was 550 rpm or about 7 rounds per second. With 6 guns firing, that would be +/- 42 rounds per second. I think it would be hard to distinguish individual gun sounds. I will tell you that on one occasion I jammed 5 of the 6 guns and when the one gun fired, I could not believe how slowly it seemed to be firing. Could have been the adrenlin though."

But as has been said before, this isn't released, it's all Work in Progress. Maybe we should just stop the updates and just release the finished versions when they are done :D

:recon:

Don't panic, the updates wont stop, but we really do appreciate your input especially when it's constructive, cheers, MP

That's my thinking as well, Zionid. :salute:

For instance, imagine a pilot hanging in his 'chute at 10 angels in the unenviable position of a front row observer of a dogfight swilrling all about him in the thin air. As a Spit/Hurri opens fire nearby I expect (Doppler effect notwithstanding) that THIS is what our current TF 4.312 version of .303's would sound like. But encased in a tight steel & aluminum cockpit, there would certainly be a number of effects going on that would affect the overall sound the leather-helmeted pilot would hear - including, but not restricted to, harmonization, resonation, plus the oft-mentioned "chuffing of the air-operated breech blocks".

Oh good to hear! (Or not hear in this update :-P)

I know I've read/heard people complain about the spitfire guns sounding silly with TFv4, (I dont hear it as often anymore, but I remember people calling it a 'fart' when it first came out roflmao ) but with 8 guns spilling out 9000+ rounds per minute... I would expect it to have a uniquely blended sound. Heck the A-10 warthog sounds like a hum and it only shoots 4200rpm.

The MGs guns sound awesome in the video though

I think what I like about the new gun sounds is the metallic metal sounds which is prevalent in the .50 cals it sounds like they have a lot of punch behind them. As far as the browning 303's go.. I don't think they had that.

With an aircraft that is traveling at 150+ mph, everything within that aircraft vibrating, 8 individual guns firing at high rates of fire all from different locations from the pilot ears which are covered by headphones. I think the sounds are on the right path.

Here is a .50 firing by itself in a Huey gunship:

https://youtu.be/jdJZsD-LCwU?t=105

Now add 7 more guns firing at ALMOST the same time, all of which would be slightly different due to the distance to the pilot and the actual harmonics each gun produces, which are all different because they are not identical pieces of machines. Its like a piano, go play a single note over and over again and you can clearly hear that note, but then add the note which is a half-step lower or higher and play it with the original... you start to lose the clarity because the sound waves are conflicting with one another in our ears, then add 6 more notes all a half-step lower or higher and you'll see what I mean.

The original sound is still present but we don't perceive that sound the same way because of everything else going on.

That is not the correct sound of the 8 brownings of a Spitfiire or Hurricane.

There is much documentation on that particular sound and the current TF4.0 is almost spot on as it is.

Heavy fabric tearing.

Hi Lolsav,
TF4.0, of which I was a member, did a lot of research on the sound of the Spitfire and Hurricane 8 browning .303's and the distinct sound reported by pilots as "Heavy Fabric Tearing". That is the current sound in TF4.0. The current sound just released according to TF5.0 is not the final version and I trust they will continue to build on the TF4.0 version with the new sound bank available.

Ah OK. I was getting my hopes up a little too high then.

Really do appreciate what you guys have done with CoD, it was unplayable or at least very poor the first time I played it when it was released, the campaign was a big let down.

Just wish we could get a WWII flight sim that is equal to IL2 1946 in terms of content, even the stock version has tons of it, and features but with a modern (or at least more modern) engine. From what I've read Battle of Stalingrad isn't really that, and they're now moving onto (or making alongside BoS) Battle of Moscow.

I (as I'm sure we all do) yearn for a modern graphics/physics engine WW2 flight sim that covers all the theatres of war (with both good static and also dynamically generated campaigns and MP (although MP is not for me)) with the majority of the planes/ground/sea units involved, not just one theatre or a couple or a specific area a battle took place in and a handful of flyable panes and enemies.

Sadly I don't think we'll ever get it and IL2 1946 will be as close as we'll ever get.

Still, carry on guys, I look forward to TF mod v5.0 (but hope it doesn't drop my framerates as they're not always great at the moment).

Totally agree. TF is building tools to make the addition of new content easier. So that over time, the addition of content should progressively become quicker & the process take less time. The game engine is sound & contains features not seen in other sims. Oleg, Ilya & the dev-team built an engine that has by far more capacity & features than any sim on the market. It will be some time before this engine becomes obsolete.

I'm not sure about the sound 4 to 6 heavy .50 cals with their relatively low cyclic rate will make, but for the .303 Browning MG sounds...I know we went round and round prior to the last patch discussing this. Eight guns with a very high cyclic rate are gonna "burb" or "buzz", not "rat-a-tat-tat". I suspect the current version is about spot on, I posted these first hand accounts before, but here goes again...

“It’s grand to sit there and hear a noise like taut canvas ripping as the eight guns send out flashing white streaks towards their objective.” (“Ten Fighter Boys”; 1942; Pg 32)

“Closing to about 300 or 400 yards, I opened fire, the bullets roared out over the noise of the engine. They don’t rattle like an ordinary Army Vickers gun. No sir! When eight Brownings open fire – what a thrill! The smoke whips back into the cockpit and sends a thrill running down your spine.” (“Ten Fighter Boys”; 1942; Pg 49)

“My right thumb felt for the firing button on the stick and pressed it. A muffled “B-r-r-r-p” came from the wings and I felt the aircraft check slightly as eight streams of tracer spanned the space between us.” (“Spitfire: The experiences of a Battle of Britain fighter pilot” by Brian Lane; 1942; Pg 49)

“I pressed the firing button. The muffled “Br-r-r-r-p” of the guns came to my ears as streams of tracer leaped from the wings…” (“Spitfire: The experiences of a Battle of Britain fighter pilot” by Brian Lane; 1942; Pg 93)

“I squeezed the firing button with my thumb. B-r-r-rup-pup-u-pup! The sound came to me muffled by my heavy helmet, and I could feel the Spitfire shudder and slow from the recoil as the eight Browning guns snarled and barked their terrific staccato.” (“Tally-Ho! Yankee in a Spitfire” by Arthur Donahue; 1941; Pg 39-40)

"Astonished"????

Not really aimed at you Snapper, sorry if it went that way. But you'd wonder how often you stumble along these "oh...these were just people! O.ol" lines. Yours was a statement, not a question.

The thing is, wars work on the principle of dehumanisation. Wars can't even work in any other way because man has an in built limitation of hurting others as long there is some empathy. Only way to get rid of that empathy is by depicting the opposition as inhumane, demons, monsters, or "subhuman". etc. Ever heared of that nice word "collatoral" damage? Premier example of how the human element is taken away and replaced by a technical term to justify own actions.

Btw, not just aiming that at WW2, but pretty much every war ever fought.

No worries. I was disappointed/derisive with the 2nd Red Tails movie depiction of that demonic scarfaced LW pilot who seemed to be demonicly salivating in every scene. What rubbish. Equally with the poor radio discipline/procedure many WW2 air combat movies portray in Hollywood's effort "to tell a story". Utter crap.

I do enjoy Rich's photos of the LW pilots in their relaxed hours. You could easily swap out the uniforms in any of those shots...just regular guys who like dogs and drink beer.

Pilots in WWII really weren't 'Regular Guys'.

They were the elite of their nation's youth in most cases.

There was generally a requirement they have a higher standard of education, initially the USAAF required a college education from pilot applicants at a time when a college degree was far more difficult to obtain... even during the height of the war, training services required a demonstrated high level of intelligence.

The training very quickly weeded out those who were not capable either intellectually or physically, the demands of the courses which were taught was not for the scatter-brained, and combined with the fact flying these aircraft required high levels of coordination, sense of balance, visual acuity, and physical skill.

The courses were taught in a compressed time scale, trainees had to learn very quickly or fail... the washout rate was very high... as well the number of pilots who died in training was also very high... for all sides.

As has been mention previously on these boards, enduring high G maneuver for ten minutes is the equivalent of taking part in a high endurance race, only those which exceptional levels of physical fitness could expect to excel.

Very few people can become fighter pilots, the average fell by the wayside.

Once into combat, the demands multiplied fourfold... managing very complex aircraft, at the same time being able to navigate, fight, and shoot.

Reaching the status of a fighter pilot is basically the equivalent of being a professional athlete... with a lot more intellectual demands and complex reasoning required. Ask yourself how many people make the big leagues?

Everyone who flys a sim likes to believe they could also fly the real thing in combat... but most of us are deluding ourselves.

Of course, Buzzsaw. Semantics. By "regular guys" I wasn't referring to their academic or physical prowess, but simply that they had the same likes, interests, etc as most young men their age in context to the related posts in this thread. Or maybe they didn't. Whatever.

Hey Snapper

Didn't mean to be critical of your post... if I appeared to be... my apologies.

My point is these guys were exceptional. Pilots like Hans Joachim Marseille, 'Buzz' Beurling, Alexander Pokryshkin or Robert Johnson were the equivalent of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Wayne Gretzky or Joe Montana. Except of course, when they competed they didn't just lose a game... they were torn apart by cannon shells, burned alive in flaming coffins or pulverized into fragments. They had eyesight, hand eye coordination, metabolisms, and an ability to stay focused under enormous stress which most people don't even come close to. Perhaps the closest equivalent nowadays are Formula 1 drivers, but no one is shooting at F1 drivers and there are a lot fewer dead.

Maybe I'm overstating the obvious, yes, they tried to relax in ways which are familiar to us, but usually those were coping mechanisms to deal with the dangers they faced. We see pictures of them with smiles on their faces, but anyone who has read diaries or bios knows what they were going through emotionally.

The Hitler style of mustache was worn by men in the Allied countries prior to the war too. Wasn't unique to Adolf.

Of course, it did become a fairly definitive label... which is why no one except perhaps John Clease in a comedy skit wears one now.

Way late to the party here, but that AA fire and Flak looks amazing...

I havn't flown in a while and I'm always amazed every time at how gorgeous this game is... and the game is like 4 years old.

Amazing work by the TF team!

PS: I also hated the new red tails movie. I made it about 20 minutes in. After the comically villain-ized Luftwaffe pilot with scars and eyepatch (he was missing horns and flames for eyes) I couldn't handle it anymore. The acting was terrible all around.

I don't think the cliffs are perfect, and the trees can look a bit odd. But there is quite a bit of greenery at the bottom of the cliffs. Some photos of it were posted at the 1C forum when the same subject came up for discussion.

Note that there are at least some trees/bushes at the top of the cliffs.

All I can say is that it's something we are keen to fix too. This is though a really difficult feature to fix but if our 'top men' have time then it may make v5.00, however there are lots of features being worked on at the moment and rather than keep delaying and delaying, we may have to release v5.00 and then look at this later. I should add though, our top coder sometimes pulls something out from up his sleeve and surprises the rest of us in TF, so never say never :)

Actually, demonic salivating was quite common among Luftwaffe pilots. One time in the Polish campaign, Adolf Galland couldn't release his bombs on a target, because his Satan Spit had solidified on the controls.
