View Full Version : Rise of Flight?

I've had the Iron Cross edition for a couple of years, but only really had a quick offline fly of each aircraft I bought in the quick mission builder as an interlude from IL2 and Cliffs. This means that I've got all the 'entente' a/c and most of the 'central powers' a/c and not really used them.

Since 'the patch', I've been having a much more serious look at RoF and been having tons of fun with it, so I thought I'd start a thread here.

Bombing in the HP 0/400 or Bristol F2b or DH4 or RE8 or Breguet is a blast, with AI taking over the pilot's seat whilst you use the bombsight. The Bristol F2b is just an awesome piece of kit I'd liken to a P47 with a rear gunner.

If anyone here hasn't downloaded the now free basic game, go for it. Buy one a/c and unlock the full version.

Here's a collage of vid clips I made from missions performed over the last couple of weeks.

That 'Uplifting Circus Music' is a military march called 'Viscount Nelson'!

But I know what you mean, ever since Monty Python used a military march for the theme tune, they all sound like that. :)

Thanks for the comments on the vid chaps. If anyone fancies a multiplayer romp in RoF, let me know.

If you download the free game and purchase the F2b for $14.00, you can do recce, artillery spotting, bombing and air to air fighting in the Bristol. Loads of scope for multi-crewing too.

And as we all know, Bristols are always better when they come in pairs.....!

I intially D/L this but never got around to going any further. Is there a particular multiplayer server thats good for this. Since CloD went teets up, I find I miss multiplayer, The main reason I have changed my sim time to ARMA II. It takes team work to achieve anything, besides it was time to see what its like to be on the same side as Keller.

Well, I'm no expert, but the best of the full real servers seems to be the Syndicate server, which Bliss will know all about. 'Les Hellequins' is ok, but Chief Red Cloud's 'New Wings' server has some great mission variety, although external views are allowed. Not that I mind this too much.

I haven't done a great deal of multiplayer, mainly because I'm still learning to fly these old buses. They're very different to WWII stuff.

Oops! :)

ROF looks and flies beautifully on my PC. Right now I'm trying to master (heh!) the DCS P51D -- it's such a squirrelly beast. It's still in beta, but I'm amazed with what E.D. has accomplished with it so far. It's a far cry scope-wise from CoD, but 3rd party developers will undoubtedly be all over it.

Still keeping a sharp eye out for the next CoD patch, though. With all the delays and time it's taking, hopefully our dev-friends will get it right this time around!

NEW WINGS (http://newwings.site.nfoservers.com/news.php) has two servers up at this time. Server one is the Basic Training server and the second one is the Intermediate Battle server.

The Basic Training server is where you can learn to fly without interferance from other players (not counting the occasional peckerwood which if we catch them we deal with them). There are differing degrees of AI targets. some can not even shoot back and some are real aces. You can practice bombing, shooting ballons or attack fighters or bombers.

The intermediate Battle server is just that. It is meant as a step up towards the full realism servers such as Syndicate amd Oceanic. We have flying assists available such as external and Icons. But neither or any assists need to be used.

Your welcome to check out the servers and if you ever have any problems, just let us at New Wings know. If you need help, any New Wings Volunteer will be happy to help you.

Our server (see above link) has a wealth of videos and tips on flying and combat.

I had a quick go on the intermediate server yesterday Chief. The map seemed very well designed, I've spent hours flying alone in the past on full-real type servers (probably Syndicate) but I was able to manoeuvre three enemy aircraft into my sights on my first mission! All three times I was thwarted by a bloody key conflict as squeezing the trigger merely zoomed in my view! :) I managed to change key-mapping in-flight (it is a good GUI) but got bounced or hit by AAA. Wounded, I headed desperately for my lines and was just about to land when the mission finished, which was not a bad thing because it was becoming clear this was an enemy airfield!

I can enjoy ROF but there's a couple of things about the views I really don't like. The way distant aircraft are portrayed by a big x and the Million Dollar Man eyeball zoom capability. Somehow it just doesn't feel anything like as engaging as Cliffs and I can't invest the necessary time in RoF.

It's a great server to dip into the game on though Chief, thanks for hosting it.

Great video Dutch! Motivated me to install RoF again and have a go. I used to buy everything they produced when I was earning, I wanted to support the project but then Cliffs and redundancy came along so I shelved it. I have a fairly well stocked hanger though and will give it a go while we wait.

Thanks old chap.

The way distant aircraft are portrayed by a big x and the Million Dollar Man eyeball zoom capability.

If you press 'I' at anytime, it'll turn off those annoying icons (the big 'x' etc). The distant aircraft are then much more realistically presented than in cliffs IMO.

I agree about the zoom thing, even though it's really useful. It'd be better if they introduced a pair of binoculars. On the other hand, the zoom means you have a progressively variable field of view. Zooming out for the biggest fov is good for searching the sky, but makes me feel nauseous with track IR. I tend to fly with a fairly realistic fov, meaning not very much, as you don't get that fisheye effect when looking around.

I was online for hours last night and got some good teamwork going via chat, escorting some DH4s in my SE5 and Bristol. Shooting white flares to rendezvous around a balloon and heading out over noman's land with the flak bursting all around was very very absorbing. Starting to love this sim.

Jun-23-2012, 10:44
As Dutch said you can turn Icons "I" off with the I key. I fly without icons and I only use the TrackIR zoom, i.e. lean forward to look closer. This doesn't zoom in like using the scroll wheel. I never use this.

It is, as with most Sims, what or better how you play it. We have Icons and zoom avaiable primarily to help new flyers climate themselves to RoF. Sort of like training wheels. It's up to the flyer as to when they stop using them.

We get pilots of all levels here and for the most part they do quite well together. occassionaly, not.

As for the missions, these are the creation of QuQi our Chief mission builder. He does quite well, and I'll pass on your kind comment.

I downloaded the new patch. Actually had to download the entire game lol. But I do like the realism in the weapons. Still haven't setup my controls yet, but it seemed to run and look quite nice flying with the keyboard. That's one of the things I always hated was all the weapons had the same speed! Now it seems like they added a much needed depth of realism. Hopefully between all the other stuff I'm doing, I might get a chance to fly it some more!

I've had ROF on my hard drive for about 3 years, I guess, always one update behind it seems. WW1 isn't my first choice of sims, but I have to say that Jason of 777 does an outstanding job of marketing. I just got lured back by their latest update and even shelled out for some of their upgrade packages, including the F2B (thanks, Dutch!).

As long as I don't have to pay for each tankful of gas (well, maybe if it's 100 octane :D ), I personally don't mind spending a buck or two for someone else's hard work. I realize there's issues about that aspect detracting from more intrinsic needs which are necessary. I'm just there for a good time, not a long time. :)

Of course, the long-awaited CoD patch finally arrives, too. How to explain all this stick time to my long-suffering wife! And now my biker buddies have texted me for a day run to Grand Bend (sort've a mini-Brighton, Dutch) today -- so a bunch of old has-beens with graying hair and beer bellies can wow the 17-year-old bikini babes by revving our noisy oh-so-yesterday Hog bikes! Guess I better set up a cot in the garage beside my Softail -- that's where I'm gonna be sleeping tonight! LOL

Oh there're loads of biker haunts in the north too. Devil's Bridge, Matlock Bath, The Cat and Fiddle. Me n the chaps used to do a lap of Wales on Sundays pretty regularly, only broken by pie n chips in Bala (by the lake) and a cup of tea in Rhyl. Oulton Park racetrack is just outside Chester.

I dunno what it was, but someone flicked a switch in my brain when I turned 40, which led to being an ex-optician, ex-musician and an ex-motorcyclist. Still got my racing leathers though, just in case. :D

Maybe it was the fault of Oleg Maddox!!

I'm afraid I was more of a racing crouch and knee sliders kind of chap than a hog rider, but as time goes on and sciatica is painful, I can see the appeal of a big slow V-Twin. :D

Great news you got the F2b. I'll probably be having a bit of Roffing later. Last night's play with the patch turned into a testing session rather than fun, we'll see. As you say, there's only so much time she who must be obeyed will tolerate it.

Yeah, my buds and I are not in the same league as the young fellas on their crotch rockets. A few years back, at great personal expense, I had my Hog bored, stroked, cammed, heads ported, throated & jetted, and ignition timing adjusted to bring my rear-wheel horsepower on the dyno increased from 62 hp (stock) to 101 hp. (Bliss has GOT to be grinning right about now! :D ). These kids are running their GXR's and Hyabusa's right off the showroom floor at 170 hp and half the all-up weight! (These young guys are also half of MY all-up weight -- the scrawny pricks! LOL). They pull wheelies on the highway starting at 70+ mph, my bike might do a wheelie as it slides off the deck of the Titanic!

Ah well, at least my bike SOUNDS better than their ring-a-ding-ding exhaust pipes! :geek:

Dutch
Jun-30-2012, 09:00
:)

Ring a ding is right!! One of my favourite bikes of all time was the little Kawasaki KR1-s 250cc two stroke. It made the same bhp as your untuned Harley, well 60 or so, and weighed in at about the same as a roll of toilet paper.

The number of occasions I embarrassed the blokes on their Fireblades are countless. Very fond memories. I've got a few pictures of me exiting the Shell Oils banked hairpin at Oulton Park on my ZX6R somewhere too. I really will have to get around to scanning some old piccies sometime.

Well, it'd help if I went out and bought a new printer/scanner. The one I've got refuses to work with Win7. Poor show from Dell.

Anyway, I've got to get back to re-installing HSFX, so see ya later!

Small update on New Wings Servers .... We currently have three servers up, Basic Training, Battlegrounds (intermediate Beginner combat server) and Battlegrounds (Advanced Beginner Combat server). However the later two will be narrowed down in the near future back to our two servers when we combine Waregrounds and Battlegrounds. Otherwise information is the same.

Remember Canuck that Rise of Flight is itself FREE with TWO aircraft. The Spad 17 and Albitrose DVa. You can download it for free here ---> Rise of Flight FREE to Play (http://riseofflight.com/tryrof/en)

So, I played the ROF unlimited demo a while back and I want return to it. I have plans to buy 9 aircraft but I don't know which. I am wanting 1 bomber, 1 fighter bomber from both sides, and then 6 historical but effective aircraft (Like the D. VII but which one?) for online and single player. I know it is limited but I can't spend too much money on this game as it is. I also plan sometime to try to get some DLC for Rail Simulator 2013 but I don't know for sure yet.

There definitely not outdated but there not as detailed as COD's unfortunately CODS building poping ruins the scene urgghhh

Now if Jason would start a ww2 sim that was as detailed as COD (In terms of cockpits, DM and Controls) I would be happy.

This one's nice

But, I dunno. I'll buy the Channel map when it comes out, coz I just like buying stuff for the sims I like. The prospect of some maritime action with subs and battleships appeals too, particularly with the Felixstowe, but like we've said in other threads, these other sims are usually just short lived diversions from Cliffs for me.

RoF can't come close to the atmospheric lighting of Cliffs for example. The shadows are nowhere near as convincing. Although the colours are realistic, they don't 'feel' real like Cliffs does.

I currently sort of wish I liked RoF more than I do, but I don't.

Keep an eye on the discounts. When you purchase multiple planes, you get a discount based on how many you buy. Also the game sometime has sales, there will likely be a sale around Christmas time.

Check out this topic on the RoF forums it goes over some of the planes that are good/nice/essential to buy.

http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=26651&hilit=buying+guide

I recommend you buy one of the two early war planes (either the Fokker Eindecker or the Airco DH2), this way you don't get left out of early war games. Both planes are entertaining to fly, but neither are a fantastic aircraft (equivalent to the G50 or Hurri for BoB)
