Hello all. I am brand new and am having issues finding out where I am on the map and often finding myself lost. I am having trouble taking off. Once I get airborne, I am most of the time getting lost and finding out that I am a very easy target. Anyone have any time to help out, I would be very grateful. I fly the spit and hurricane

Thanks

If you don't have a headset, go and get a cheap one then join us on Teamspeak.
ts3server://216.52.148.29?port=9987

There's always someone around to lend a hand, and we're a pretty noob friendly community.

Tips:
Navigation is a challenge and always has been.
Have a good look at these maps: http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6722
Getting used to how the game looks, and where things are and how fast you can get there takes time.
Keeping track of your speed and heading will help a lot.

Here's a great WW2 training video "Nought Feet": http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=4fa_1321810275
You can actually fly most of the filmed route in-game.

Of course if you're not careful, the whole navigation side of the game can get pretty deep:

If you want that stuff you can find links off my thread: http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12895

Tips:
Being a Target:
Start further inland.
I know there's an urgent desire to get going and get to the action.

BUT - you need height!

So start further inland.
Know what compass heading you need to be on to get where you are trying to go.
Climb.
The higher you get:
The more the landscape looks like the map.
The more energy you have to use in combat.

Hop onto Teamspeak, that's what I did and everyone is very friendly and helpful here.

Flying at low level, 1k or lower is a challenge for me in terms of navigation. However, when flying at higher altitudes, it's relatively easy to orientate your self, especially if you can see the coastline, by referencing the land shape on the coastline to land shape on your map. Large rivers breaking up the land, spikes of land sticking out, shape etc. Same applies when flying in land, I usually do this by choosing points on map for reference, for example:
Take off from airfield and head south east, further into France, I look into the map and choose my reference points:
1. Liver shaped large forest
2. Riverbed to south of it - follow
3. Large city with said river running through it, the river divides the city into 1/3 and 2/3 with 2/3 of the city on West side, turn east here
4. Enemy airfield approx 10km from previous town

Once I have this set:
1. take off and contact on landmark 1.
2. Check river, following
3. Check town turning

etc etc

Time in game is best help. Pilots lost way in real like Amin Faber. And lots others

Climb high makes easier but middle of French area can be hardest. England is easier with Dungeness Isle of Wight and Manston area provides good triangulation.

French side use Cap Gris Nez, Dunkerque and Berck. St Omer is distinctive forest and town.

Take time to look around but do not forget your 6!

On tonight? 8-10 pm EST

I can show you how to navigate the map, if you like. Take off and landing, too.

I'll leave combat training to better pilots than me.

Since I don't even know how to START a Spit or a Hurri (let alone fly one), I can't be much help here. But if you ever want to learn to fly Blue I'd be more than willing to show you the ropes.
