View Full Version : Team Fusion Update - October 9th 2015 - Coming along nicely :)

Good day everyone and hopefully this wont be too small of an update to keep the faith :)

So, as the chap dealing with posting information about work in progress I have to look around try and find nuggets to share. Sadly (for me) most of the work involves the new map which I am not allowed to mention until it's ready to showcase (but it's moving along nicely) so I have to find images of WiP which may give hope to the legion of individuals (and teams) who are keen to see progress being made.

Now, I have only just returned from a trip to the US where for the last 3-months I have been preparing a version of Checkertails Part 3 to show at the final ever reunion of the 325th Fighter Group veterans and so have had barely any time since getting back to the UK.....so here is what I have managed to get together in the last few minutes :)

Well, just as a note beforehand, Buzzsaw posted the last update about the 110 explaining the progress and attention to detail regarding engine modelling and FM. This attention to detail will be for all aircraft we release. I just thought I'd add that as the amount of original documents TF has access to is vast and so all details are and will be looked at including the following.

First.

The Martlet is now in the UV unwrapping stage. This is one of the most difficult but rewarding parts of most model making as this is used to create the skin template. During this stage all areas that can be painted by the skinners are created and so working out which parts will be visible to paint is time intensive, intricate but ultimately worth every second as it allows those historically accurate skins to be possible. Th following images show the model with a false texture (sorry...no, it wont be available in-game to fly!) as the areas for skinning are worked out.

19030 19031 19032

Now it's not only aircraft that are being created as can be seen from the following models that are near completion :)

19033 19034 19035

But let's be honest.....it's a flight sim and we all love Flight Sims :) , so here is the latest work on the Beaufighter Cockpit :)

19036 19037 19038

and, for the first time....the lovely Spitfire MKV (obviously work in progress) ;)

19039 19040 19041 19042

So that's about the long and short of this update. Hopefully it will show that we are still plugging away to create the huge v5.0 update and we will of-course add news when and as we can :salute:

Cheers, MP/TF

Excellent work on the Beaufighter cockpit. It must be very hard to have textures on the standards of the cockpits in CloD, and to me this looks EXTREMELY promising.
Thank you Team Fusion for making this game the ultimate Combat Flight Sim it was supposed to be.

I mean addition's to how the game look's in the Campaign and Mission's.

Looks amazing! Out of curiosity, which versions of the Spit V are we getting, will they all be tropical?

At this point we are aiming for:

- Spit Va (Merlin 45, eight .303 MG's, fabric ailerons, no tropical filter)

- Spit Vb (Merlin 45, two Hispano II 20mm Cannon with 60 round drum, four .303's, metal ailerons)

- Spit Vb-Trop (Merlin 45, two Hispano II 20mm Cannon with 60 round drum, four .303's, metal ailerons, Vokes tropical air intake filter)

Also:

- Spit IIB. (Merlin XII, two Hispano II 20mm cannon with 60 round drum, four .303's, fabric ailerons)

There could possibly be more variant types, but it depends on the progress of the work. Remember TF 5.0 is basically a 1941 module.

And of course, as has been previously mentioned, there will be 109's to match the above.

I know the 109 jockeys are getting antsy waiting, but rest assured their aircraft are in good hands. ;)

Keeping the faith here TF, thanks all Gents and for lifting the curtain slightly. Mystic mentioned the Marlet won't be flyable but wondered if the carriers will be able to launch a Spit from them?

Clever with the different versions of Spits and means they can fly over the existing map in a slightly later time, nice. Back in il2 days, one of the best dogfights were with the SpitvB v f4. I wonder if the awesome Focke Wulf is around to spoil the Spitfire party.

Cheers lads for all the hard work

There will be no 190A for TF 5.0.

Too much work, too many versions required for us to realistically to be able to create it.

If we do produce it for later releases, will need at least 4 versions to start:

190A1, A2, A3, and A4. There are many differences and changes between those types.

The following is Buzzsaw from the March 27 2015 Team Fusion Updates in the ATAG Forum
================================================== ===========================

Everything we do is subject to the demands of real life and everyone needs to remember the key phrase: "Sh*t Happens"..........

There are NO deadlines and NO Guarantees.

What we have announced to this point which SHOULD be flyable for TF 5.0 is as follows:

Wellington IA
P-40E
F4f-3/Martlet
Bf-108 Taifun
Tiger Moth with guns and bombs
Blenheim IV with wing bombs added, plus twin Browning rear turret
Bf-109E-7 and E-7NZ
Bf-109F... no details on exact model(s) have yet been released
Spitfire(s) comparable era as 109E-7 and F no details on exact models released yet
Hurricane(s) comparable era as 109E-7 and F no details on exact models released yet

What we have announced we are working on as well... whether they are ready or not for TF 5.0... difficult to say.

Beaufighter IF/IC
Fiat CR-42
Gloster Gladiator

plus several other aircraft which we haven't mentioned.

There are also quite a number of ships and vehicles, some of which are complete, some in progress, some have been seen in updates some not.

And of course, the map(s)... Which we are not saying anything about.

Wait for MP's updates for details.

While I appreciate Rich's enthusiasm and interest, ( ) there are a number of inaccuracies in the video which need to be corrected.

The P-40 shown in the video is a later model, with the lengthened fuselage, this type will not be included. The version we will include is the P-40E with the shorter fuselage.

The Hurricane IV will not be included. This aircraft was a later production model seen in 1943-44. We will be creating models of the Hurricane II seen in 1941. (details later)

There will be no Blenheim V included... What we are including is an updated later version Blenheim IV and Blenheim IVF with provision for the dual rear gun turret and the wing bombs.

And in the interests of quelling unrest among the mob also I might as well be exact in the details of the 109's we are aiming to produce.

The 109F models we plan to include are as follows:

- 109F1 with DB601N engine, one MG/FFM 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's
- 109F2 with DB601N engine, one MG151/15 15mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's
- 109F2 with DB601N engine, one MG151/20 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's
- 109F2 Trop with DB601N engine, one MG151/15 15mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's, plus Tropical air intake filter
- 109F2 Trop with DB601N engine, one MG151/20 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's, plus Tropical air intake filter
- 109F4 with DB601E engine, one MG151/20 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's
- 109F4 Trop with DB601E engine, one MG151/20 20mm cannon firing through the prop hub and two nose mounted 7.92mm MG's, plus Tropical air intake filter

Edit: Forgot to mention there will be "De-rated" and "Rated" versions of the 109F4 to reflect the initial restrictions on the DB601E power output.

Of course, everything TF plans for is subject to Murphy's Law and the law of "Real Life"... so there are no guarantees.

Just a question though:Is there a plan the 109F4 will be available with the additional two 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons in underwing gondolas (F4/R1 version)? There were some very negative criticism from famous Luftwaffe pilots back then for the F4 being quite inadequate concerning its armament.

Nick:salute:

These underwing gondolas were relatively rare, and were installed later in the use of the F4... not AFAIK in 1941. There were approximately 200 F4's manufactured in the first quarter of 1942 with these gondolas, and they began to see some combat in mid 1942. For these reasons it is unlikely gondola equipped F4's will be included in TF 5.0 unless we get a flood of new talented members joining TF. It is already a tremendous amount of work to do the 109F's external and cockpit as it is.

The gondolas severely degraded the performance of the aircraft, pilots of the Jagdwaffe did not like these installations, even when they later became more common on the higher powered G and K models, the gondolas were a big disadvantage and basically doomed any aircraft equipped with them which encountered an Allied fighter.

These gondola equipped F4's were created to deal with Allied Heavy Bombers and IL-2 Sturmoviks, and since neither of these types will be included in TF 5.0, this is another reason we likely won't see them. If Team Fusion ends up continuing our work and going on to produce a TF 6.0, it is highly likely we will build a USAAF heavy bomber for that release, and in that case, certainly there would be a gondola version of the F4. (as well as G models, etc.)

By the way, most of the criticism of the F models armament occurred initially when the F2 was equipped with the 15mm MG151/15 auto cannon in the nose. Once this was replaced with the MG151/20, there were not many complaints. The standard F4 armament was more than enough to shoot down an Allied fighter. Although the number of weapons was not great, the fact they were centralized in the nose meant more rounds hit and accuracy was greatly improved over the E model.

IIJG27Rich
Oct-14-2015, 15:47
By adding wing canons to any F model you are totally defeating the purpose of the aeroplane in my opinion. It's like adding mustard to a peanut butter and jam sandwich. I wouldn't want anything hanging off of that beauty :)

Buzzsaw thanks for the information,I didn't know so much details as you about these historical data and facts! In this case the F4 will be a highly desirable bird to fly and fight with and I'm pretty sure the Bf jockeys will certainly be more than pleased with the "F" version of this magnificent plane!

And Rich you're right, she's certainly a DDG (Drop Dead Gorgeous) beauty indeed!!!

Nick.

Another fantastic update - very exciting!!!

Our squadron was talking last night about the P40E and this new map... I'm a firm believer that this aircraft/map alone will attract more North American pilots to CloD... I long for the day when the servers in our timezone match the numbers of the European timezones!

On top of that, as someone who loves bombing and flies the Blennie all the time - that I am soooo excited for the opportunity to fly the Wellington.

Big thanks as always to the work being done to continue the life of what I consider the best sim on the market - the others have some bling, but nothing matches what TF has done for CloD!

Has the Team Fusion mod team membership stayed steady, increased, or has it dwindled over the last year or so? Is there usually a resurgence of interest from modders after a significant update? With the understanding that many of the modders might need a significant break. I'm expecting Team Fusions new theater to have a major impact on the number of players using the sim, which should expose the potential of the sim to even more potential modders.

I'm sitting here ringing my hands because I know a young man who is perfect for TF and I've been telling him about it for a couple of years now. Sent him the links etc. He was actually going to school for exactly this reason to make games and was doing well I hear but you know how young people are LOLOL

Always could use more, especially 3d artists. With that said though I'd say it has stayed steady, perhaps increased although occasionally we get someone who joins and is never heard from again which is a bummer. Hopefully you are right about the new theater increasing the interest of potential modders.

@Rich, if I did 3d work in school and was wishing to do it as a job what better way to start your portfolio? Most artists have to land a killer job before having a model of theirs showcased in a well known game, someone with talent who is wishing to get a job in the field couldn't ask for a better opportunity.

My 2¢.

I agree with you 100% Spiritus_Mortem. This young guy is my bosses girl friends son and to call my boss my boss is kind of a joke because we've known each other since grade school so he and I kind of want the same thing for this kid. My friend and I are both mad about WWII history..especially me and would be over the moon if he got into this.

We always need more 3D artists... the amount of work required to create the models is just monstrous.

But right now we actually need code crunchers as well, and in particular guys who can work confidently in both 3D graphics and code, because it is in the overlap where the 3D models are linked into the game where another monster workload for the TF team is located. All those 3D parts and drawings don't magically work on their own, they are nothing more than pictures... someone has to write detailed programs for those graphics to then actually be linked into the game's physics engine and finally become virtual aircraft which operate flawlessly within the game.

For example, this is the code for the Ju-88 pilot cockpit. (only the cockpit)

I agree for the most part on the MG151/20 being deployed on the F4 but the biggest complaint from a number of Experten for the change over to the 20mm cannon on the F4 was that whilst it gave the aircraft a slightly better hitting power, the F4 carried less cannon ammunition than the F2 with it's 15mm cannon. For some this increase in hitting power was not sufficient enought to offset the reduction in cannon ammo. Some pilots on the eastern front elected to keep their F2's instead of switching over to the F4.

I agree. I think this would be an attainable theater given the inclusion of the BF109F-2 F-4, and the the P-40E

, will need at least 4 versions to start:

190A1, A2, A3, and A4. There are many differences and changes between those types.

Why need all version? Why not just A4 for early 42 France and desert? More or less work for Martlet?

Why need all version? Why not just A4 for early 42 France and desert? More or less work for Martlet?

Eliminating the A1/A2/A3 does not reduce the work significantly. Creating an A-4 is still 90% of the work. And more importantly we do not have the modelers for the work.

And the 190A4 was a 1942 type. We have already said TF 5.0 is primarily about 1941. There were a few early versions of the 190 active in the late summer and fall of 1941... (only about 30 aircraft active) those were the A1/A2 which were very different in performance from the A-4... We would want to include these so we do all the 190's in their complexity, which hasn't been done by any other Flight Sim... but no point in doing early versions without the A-3/A-4.

And in addition, we would also need the matching aircraft for the 190A3/4... ie. the Allied types which were specifically created to counter it. We will not create an unbalanced set.

So the early Spit IX would also need to be included in the set, as well as the low alt clipped wing Spit V with cropped supercharger, as well as other types.

Sorry, but the community is going to have to wait. (if we ever get to TF 6.0, which is not a sure thing either)

We know what our capabilities are, we know how much work we can handle, (we are already swamped with the aircraft currently being produced) and we will stick with our plan.

Edit:

If a person with the 3D modeling skills required to create the FW190 wants to join us, he would be welcome to... and welcome to start work on the 190. But it wouldn't be released with TF 5.0 as it would be unlikely to be completed by our deadline.

This would be going up the boot of Italy but not in North Africa as I'm sure you know. From what I understand after patch 5 things will come along much easier / faster. In my opinion the red side will be wanting something right away after 5 because they will are going to have a pretty difficult fight in us for the first time. I can just imagine Karaya or Ape in one of those F4s Even I could get away :devilish:

First of all, TF has not said where the next theater will be.

That aside, for historical accuracy, the first Spit IXF Squadron (early model at +15 boost) was deployed in Tunisia on Jan 31st 1943 and a number of others arrived between then and the surrender in May. In NW Europe they were deployed starting in July of 1942 which is the same time the A-4 arrived.

190A's did arrive in N Africa just at about the time of El Alamein, but AFAIK they did not engage in combat over Libya or Egypt. Only 109E and F Jabos were in action there. The 190's arrived later and were caught up in the German response to the Allied TORCH invasion and were re-deployed to Tunisia, where they performed excellent service. These aircraft were assigned to II Gruppe of Schlachtgruppe 2 and were designated Fighter-bombers, although they did double duty as Fighter interceptors. The types were mostly 190A4/U1 or 190A4/U3 although there may have been some late arriving A-5/U3's. Kurt Bühligen was the most successful Mediterranean 190A ace with 44 kills over N Africa to add to his earlier totals.

You do realise the 109F is balanced against the Spit Vb/c, the matchup is about what we have now with the Spit II and 109N, the F especially the F1/2 has no real performance advantage over a Mk V and just as the F4 improved performance so did later mkV's.

The Spitfire V and the 109F were relatively well balanced although the later 109F4 running at full boost did have a significant speed advantage.

Contrary to the misleading impression given by IL- 1946, when the 109G- was introduced, it was not a better aircraft than the 109F4. At that time the DB605A engine was still having reliability problems and was not able to use full 1.42ata boost, so the horsepower totals were not higher than the late DB601E. Top speed of the F4 was similar to the G-2, plus the F was lighter and turned better.

Re. Luftwaffe aerial superiority: The real period of German advantage on the Western Front was approx. February of 1942 to July of 1942, when the 190A-3 was in operation with its upgraded BMW-801D engine, and the British did not yet have their Spitfire IXF. Prior to that, the early versions of the FW190 were equipped with the BMW-801C engine, which had 200 less horsepower than the D. Plus these early engines had many reliability problems.

It was during the 'Channel Dash', or OPERATION CEREBRUS, in February 1942 that the British got the real nasty shock of just how good the FW190's were.

Hans Joachim Marseilles... considered the greatest fighter pilot ever, by many observers.

Not a conventional pilot... liked to sunbathe naked on the beach at Tobruk.

And to play Jazz music, which was officially not approved by the National Socialists... And to chase the girls... although he apparently was planning to settle down, just before he was killed.

http://www.warhistoryonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/119-Book-Marseille-Germany.jpg

When Hitler presented him with his medals, there was some concern he might say something offhand or pull a prank and he was severely warned to behave before hand.

He had the highest score versus the Western Allies of any Luftwaffe Ace, although to be sure, he was primarily up against inferior aircraft... and some of his kill stats are questionable.

But certainly an amazing pilot.

It didn't kill it's pilots by folding it's wings up or losing it's tail like F's did, it took quite a while to sort out the Freidrichs structural problems, many pilots were killed including Wilhelm Balthazar by it's propensity to fail under G stresses!

Marseille was a real bad ass there is no doubt.

It's true many consider him to be the best among the Luftwaffe Experten because all of his victories were achieved against the western allies who had a strong initiative attribute in their fighting which generally made them more difficult to shoot down versus the Red Army pilots where initiative was frowned upon due to the heavy communist ideology at the time. This eventually changed as the war progressed but during Marseille's time it was not the case.

Another interesting factor as pointed out by Mike Spick was strike rate. This is the number of sorties divided by the number of kills achieved by the pilot. Marseille has been credited with 158 kills. Given his number of sorties ~383 he had a strike rate of 2.42. In other words it took Marseille on average over 2 sorties to before he scored a kill. This rate places him 9th among Luftwaffe pilots. Gunther Scheel is at the top of the list with a .99 strike rate or basically 1 kill for every sortie he engaged in, thus making him supremely efficient. However, he only scored 71 kills before becoming KIA. All his kills were scored on the Eastern Front. Interestingly, another North African Veteran/Med veteran was Werner Schroer. He flew with Marseille in JG27 and modeled his flying after that of Marseille. He flew much less than Marseille though (197 sorties) but managed to shoot down 24 allied 4 engine bombers and 12 Russian planes near the end of the war. He total kills numbered 114, his strike rate was 1.73 which was superior to that of Marseille's and places him second only to that of Scheel. Schroer survived the war unlike the other two.

Yes. I find this information interesting as well as it gives you a bit of a different view of how the kills were achieved. Of course all this assumes these to be officially credited kills. I won't get into the debate as to the accuracy of these official tallies.

Hartmann's strike rate was 4.05 placing him 70th on the list.

The problems with the weakness of the 109's wings was not limited to the F, it was an issue with the G models as well.

Basically the F's new wing/aileron design (which carried over into the G and later) allowed for much better high speed lateral maneuver capability, but this also put more stress on the wings.

In game terms, unlike the E models, whose ailerons tend to become unresponsive at high speed, when players fly the F they will have the ability to maneuver, but they will also need to be careful not to use this maneuverability at very high speeds and too aggressively. The added lateral maneuverability will give them an advantage at high speed over Spitfires equipped with fabric ailerons, but will be erased once the Spits are re-equipped with metal types.

And yes, we hope to model thes factors in TF 5.0, in the same way we modeled the tendency of the Spit to shed wings under hard turns at high speed in TF 4.312.

RAF74_Buzzsaw

The major reason Luftwaffe pilots based on the Eastern Front had such high kill totals was the poor training standard of the VVS pilots. Inexperienced pilots were easy pickings for Aces like Hartmann and Rall.

The second most important reason was the Soviet emphasis on low level operations and the Soviet aircraft's poor high altitude performance. Basically until very late in the war, the VVS surrendered ownership of higher altitudes to the Luftwaffe, so even when the Luftwaffe was outnumbered heavily, they could still find security at higher alts, and they almost always had the advantage of the 'bounce'.

Soviet pilots like Alexander Pokryshkin tried to counter this by flying higher and using 'stepped' flights, but aircraft like the P-39, even the lightened and higher powered later versions just did not have the high alt performance of the 109's or even the 190A. The rest of the Soviet aircraft were primarily equipped with the VK105 engine, which was not a good performer up high. Neither was the AsH82 radial.

It wasn't till the arrival of the Yak 9U, with the Klimov VK107 engine that the Soviets really got a decent high alt fighter. There is also some indication the P-63 was also flown later in the war at higher altitudes by Pokryshkin and his regiment.

Yes, I have the information... you can see from the update re. the Spit V, where I talk about the models and which type will have fabric or metal.

I do not think we will do every updated version, for example, the Spit Va had fabric ailerons to start, and some were updated to metal, but we won't have the updated version, only those which came out of the factory with metal, ie. Vb and later.

Hurricane did not change its ailerons AFAIK.

Yes but the highest scoring allied ace is a Russian isn't it.

If we are to believe the claims. Soviet kill claims when compared to actual German losses show some of the largest inaccuracies of any nationality.

Yes. Ivan Kozhedub, with 66 kills. But take it with a grain of salt.

The top non-soviet allied ace is a tie between American Richard "Dick" Bong and South African Pat Pattle who flew in the RAF, both with 40 victories. Some say that Pattle could have up to 50 but it's not confirmed. Following them is Johhnie Johnson at 38, probably my favourite ace. His book "Wing Leader" is an excellent read.

However, there are non-Germans who scored higher than Kozhedub, but they were Finnish and Japanese.

That makes sense, the Va was a limited production run anyway, I believe it suffered from a too small radiator causing overheating in the climb?

I asked about the Hurricane as some sources recon the Mkii had metal ailerons but I cannot find any info to confirm that, so I am dubious?

Too small oil cooler, because the Merlin 45 engines were originally installed in Mk I airframes... they needed to be upgraded to the Mk II's oil cooler... with another problem relating to icing up of the prop governor at high alts.

There were experimental installations of wings and ailerons on Hurricanes, but I cannot find anything to say the production model was changed.

No same here, I think the confusion comes from the aircraft flying today (BoB flight etc) use metal ailerons, I have had a look at many photographs and dug through technical publications but cannot find any evidence of Hurricanes being equipped during the war, MkIV could possibly have been changed but up to 43 it seems to be all fabric.

I`ve never heard of metal ailerons on any Hurricane. If there a picture of it lets have a look. Either the Hawker Typhoon, or even the Hawker Tempest (!) had fabric ailorons.

The pilot's cockpit and bombardiers station are generally completed.

Work continues on the turrets.

All the completed 3D material now has to be implemented into the game and code written to allow this.

Flight modeling is mostly completed.

Damage modeling is underway.

Nothing wrong with your skins... we are hoping... but not guaranteeing, that we can have the two waist gunners positions modeled as well for the Wellington IC version. (not the IA)

But that wouldn't affect the skins too much.

Sorry to be worried whit this small detail, but in this picture the nice Wimpy cockpit the P-8 Lubber Line (http://s1.postimg.org/svpi9hyq7/P8_Compass_Lubber_line.jpg) still missed (as in other British planes)- this detail is important to turn OFF the (dumb) "HUD":
