I've been doing some testing on the vexed question of why the AI sits above while bombers are being attacked and does nothing.

Here is what I have discovered
1. The AI priority is always the player flight. this makes sense in terms of gameplay
2. I got the AI to perform its task of defending the bombers by assigning them ESCORT duty and selecting the bomber fleet as a target then they performed as expected engaging fighters who were not player squad, effectively defending the bombers.
3. FREE HUNT does not seem to work. The planes flew their waypoints without much deviation.
4.COVER was pretty much the same.
5. The AI Target bombers over fighters even when instructed to do otherwise using ENGAGE FIGHTERS Task

The variables that should affect AI Behavior are the TASK Assigned and the various SKILL Modifiers
Since analyzing their behavior involves tweaking these variables and seeing what happens I thought it might be an idea for people to run their own tests and report back on the results in this thread
The Skill modifiers of which there are seven can be assigned individually to each aircraft or as a group and a re accessed through the ... button on the right side of the skill box in FMB. They vary between 0 and 1. Hovering over the modifier shows a tool tip briefly describing what it should do
What to look for is changes in AI behavior as a result of tweaking one of these settings using a constant mission setting
The more people get involved the better our data will be.

Hey MigMan

Thanks for your work on this.

If you can PM me any results of your testing, I'd appreciate that.

We would like to make changes to the AI routines for TF 5.0, although we cannot promise how extensive that may be.

Thanks again. :salute:
