First check this thread....

http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4051&highlight=books

There are many books on the Battle of Britain...Quite a few right or wrongly view the battle as a close run thing....'The Most Dangerous Enemy' by Stephen Bungay does not...and it is massively informative...It says that the British defence system was at the time the best in the world and that is what the Luftwaffe were up against...This book blows away a lot of the myths surrounding this battle...and for that is important.....I'm on my 3rd read of this book...I highly recommended it...

I have just finished Adolf Gallands book 'The first and the last'....Good book from a german pilots point of view of which there are very few so important in that way....and good to read about the personality clashes within the german ranks which often proved a hinderance to positive results in the field...

Any of the books by Chris Goss on the BoB - good aircrew descriptions etc.

One example - http://www.amazon.com/Luftwaffe-Fighters-Battle-Britain-Chris/dp/0859791513

And if you are looking for something a bit different but still about the BoB then this might be of interest

The Good Fight - Battle of Britain Propaganda and the Few' by Garry Campion. Might upset some readers but its an interesting read nonetheless. I havent read it for a few years but now that i have it out i might re-read.....

Well, there is one title very popular in Poland: http://www.amazon.com/303-Squadron-Legendary-Britain-Fighter/dp/1607720051

Actually this book made me interested in WWII history. And look were I am now :D Playing Cliffs of Dover. I can still remember some of the stories pictured here, and I read this book 13 years ago...

Cool stuff. So was the author. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkady_Fiedler

If you want to know what it was like to be an RAF pilot during the BoB then I recommend 'Ten little fighter boys'. A series of short pieces written by ten pilots actually during the battle, not all of whom survived it. It is not about propaganda or selected 'good bits', it tells you about the reality.

For the Luftwaffe side there is actually only one book written by a 109 pilot about the BoB, 'Spitfire On My Tail'

I HIGHLY recommend these two. Both VERY detailed, the former is the definitive account of the battle.

Sorry fellas... while Len Deighton is a good thriller writer, he is sadly lacking in accuracy when it comes to history.

FIGHTER is full of myths and errors.

Here are some personal accounts which are less well known. (the best personal account from the British side is of course, is FIRST LIGHT by Geoffrey Wellum, which has already been mentioned)

----

FIGHTER PILOT by Paul Richey: Unusual in that it is an account by a RAF pilot of the "Phoney War" in France, as well as the German Blitzkrieg and Fall of France... very illuminating of the tremendous pressure the RAF was under on the continent.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51euLAZG4mL._SX305_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

---

LUFTWAFFE FIGHTERS & BOMBERS, The Battle of Britain, by Chris Goss: Many different accounts, from both Fighter and Bomber pilots who flew for the Luftwaffe during the BoB. Very factual accounts of the pressures they faced, their successes and failures. Probably provides one of the best overviews from the German side.

---

Another one from the same publisher:

THE LUFTWAFFE BOMBERS, The Battle of Britain, by Chris Goss: More accounts from multiple pilots.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51OFiNRZJYL._AC_UL320_SR242,320_.jpg

---

SPITFIRE ATTACK by W.T. Rolls: RAF Spitfire pilot's account. Not just about the BoB, also continues after.

http://pictures.abebooks.com/isbn/9780718306625-uk-300.jpg

---

FIGHTER PILOT, A self portrait by George Barclay: Excerpts from the diary of a pilot of his experiences in the BoB... he later went on to die in the air over El Alamein, which is not covered in this book.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WYFKDAG8L._SX330_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

---

ONE OF THE FEW by Group Captain J.A. Kent: 'Johnny' Kents biography, he was the Canadian Flight Leader for No. 303 Squadron who was mis-identified as British in the BATTLE OF BRITAIN film, the one who says "...Stop that Polish Chatter..." which of course, he didn't, but a movie is a movie... ;)

Hi Everyone...I can certainly vouch for Buzzsaw's choice of 'Fighter Pilot' by Paul Richey. I read it first at the age of fourteen and it made a huge impression on me and certainly boosted my interest in 'The Battle for France' and the sturdy Hurricane. It's a riveting read and would be a 'sure fire hit' for anybody on our Forum.
For my own choice, it would be Geoffrey Wellum's 'First Light.' I have a precious signed copy of this book and met the 'great man,' along with Gunther Rall, at a book signing event at 'Aces High' Art Gallery in Wendover, Bucks. (Great place to see the highest standard in aviation art and well worth a visit if you've not been!)
I was hugely impressed with both Wellum and Rall when I met them. Rall spoke impeccable English and was generous to a fault when referring to his erstwhile enemies...a real gentleman! Wellum, too, was bright as a button and his intelligence and humanity is certainly reflected in his book.
'First Light' tells his Battle of Britain story, from his training on Harvard's in Canada to his first solo in a Spitfire. He writes with tremendous ease, so that you feel you are with him in the cockpit. In particular, his account of how he became lost over the north sea in atrocious weather, with only his instruments to keep him 'right side up' and his subsequent battle with panic when he realised he couldn't find his way back to the coast is absolutely riveting!
I think Geoffrey Wellum is an amazing man and one of the last of 'The Few' still with us. Read his book....borrow, beg....steal a copy! You won't regret it! Salute!

I agree with those in here who recommend Bungay's "The most dangerous enemy". In my view, as a historian, it is absolutely the best book on the BoB.
