WWII was the apex of mechanical design focus.... timing and calculation problems which we could solve very easily now with electronic transistors and chips were solved with mechanical means through very complex sets of cams, gears, wheels and rollers interacting.

Naval Fire control computers being one.... another would be the Komandogerat which controlled the Focke Wulf 190A throttle/pitch/mix... an elaborate all mechanical device.

These devices were like complex metal watch mechanisms on a larger scale. In many ways much more challenging to create than electronics.

Cool video...gotta love the genius (and potential accuracy) of analog computers.

The U.S. Navy was still teaching some of these components in Fire Control "A" school in the early '80s, and they remained arcane questions in our advancment exams into at least the late '80s.
