Well folks its that time of year again when we rally the troops and get some interest going for the 'Duxford Flying Legends Airshow'..Europes Largest Gathering of Warbirds..

The dates this year are...Saturday 9 - Sunday 10 July 2016

This will be our 9th year........Beers, WW2 aircraft, Good Company...It doesn't get much better than that!

Here's the New 2016 trailer

The famous Eagle Pub with WW2 USAAF and RAF squadron graffitti preserved ceiling and with 'Double Helix' plaque!..Yes at first it starts out as a very educational and inspiring visit...and then we get totally mullered!

I just booked our tent on campsite...for Friday 8th and Sat 9th July...

For those interested there's actually a 30% off Code for booking online 21 days before the date....

http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/campsites/uk/cambridgeshire/greatshelford/cambridge

You can try booking by ringing the number in there but I gave up in the end...I rang every day for a week and only got the answer machine...So good luck with that one!

No Gold Pass for us....That's a different area we have never exploited....

Mysticpuma
Apr-17-2016, 10:24
I'd had the Gold Pass for the last 3-years. To be honest....it's difficult to justify. The main reason I bought it was simply because you can park on site with no grief and also get on the flightline earlier. However you can do that for an extra fiver. You get a 'free' programme and that's about it really. The seating is not that beneficial if you want to take images or shoot video. Video will always have the commentator talking his usual tosh during the display, especially when the aircraft are flying past :( and with two speakers pointing at the Gold area....you wont get anything else for audio.
Images can be shot anywhere on the site but in the Gold Pass area you'll have to stand at the back because you'll get stoned by the seated people if you raise your head near the front! :)
Personally if they had seating that was elevated from front to back it would be perfect. You could see above the person in front of you and see the taxiing aircraft fully, not just the wings up.
Sadly I can't make it this gear due to work commitments but will be there in 2017....and most likely head to the campsite and the adventures that lay within! :)

Cheers, MP

Got back last night from Duxford,

Met up with Lewis and the gang and bumped into JG4 in the Eagle pub, camped over night and spent the Saturday at the show and in the Museum.

So how did it go?

The ATAG lads made myself and my mate Bob very welcome despite Bob not even being a CloD player and it was a great social evening on Friday returning to the campsite at 01:00 after a kebab and finding out Lewis speaks Turkish, and retired for the night at 02:00,

JG4 are a great bunch of lads and it was really good to meet them, the slightly awkward not knowing what to say moment passed in seconds as we realised we all have a lot in common, Balthazar and DUI being very social, the ice was broken and we all got talking, so a big :salute: to the lads from Germany.

Woke up next morning at 07:30 in a light drizzle, went and had a shower then Bob and myself walked down to Cambridge for a proper furr your arteries English Breakfast, once we were all sorted it was on the bus and off to Duxford.

Spent the first few hours in the Museum hangers, and browsing the shops before the show started at 14:00, almost got in the B17 for a walk through but they ran out of time before airside was closed :grrr:

The show was great, well I though it was, Lewis fell asleep on the concrete like he fell out of a ninth floor window, causing great obstruction to the general public, the sun filtered through the high cloud making it very warm and we all ended up looking like extras from an Amdram pochahontas production, the flying was enjoyable if a little sedate as you would expect for aircraft of this age.
The F22 was a surprise but not really flown with any enthusiasm and the narration CD for the F22 was really, really, naff, someone please write to the DoD and tell them the guy who did that needs shooting, it's a psudo Hollywood B move style overly dramatic embarrassment!

The F4 Wildcat was great to see but sounds like a broken motorbike, Gloster Gladiators are absolutely AWESOME, the top of the loops they pulled were so tight it was astonishing almost looking like it was trying to flip, B25 Mitchells are beautiful in the flesh, B17 are very impressive when they taxi past, love the sound, Hawker Sea Furies are magnificent and sound soooo smooth compared to other radials!

The Dakota was lovely and surprised us all when it did a sudden climbing break to Port away from it's Beech escorts, The Blenheim is a hybrid of mk1 and MkIV bits (thanks to Monkeynut for explaining that one) the original cockpit (mkIV) is in the Museum and guys, it's really small, the in game graphics make it look quite large, the real one is tiny I doubt I could fit without taking the seat out :stunned:

There's a lot more to say but I'm not going to bore you all stupid even more, all I can say is make the effort, it's great to put faces (really ugly ones mostly :) ) to the voices, my mate Bob enjoyed the weekend so much he want's to go again next year.

Oh, and Moose shall now be re named The Cat as he's scared of rain, what a wuss!

To be fair I think most of us had a kip at some point during the show after a rather late pre show evening of boozing at the Eagle.

The Raptor was very cool and the commentary was hilarious, couldn't have been more American, I thought it was a wind up.

Fantastic weekend all round, good to meet so many new chaps this year especially Gromit, Bob and the JG4 guys and good to catch up with the usual suspects too!

I joined Lewis & co late Friday just as they were about to head out to The Eagle. I had heard of The Eagle but never been there so we put the tent up in record time and followed them down. What a great pub. It should be the pilots version of Mecca; a place you must try to visit in your lifetime to show true devotion :-) We missed seeing Gromit as we staggered off looking for food and more pubs and did not make it back :-) We did see him next morning though.

23389

I have not been to Duxford for quite a while so some of it was new to me. The new building for the American aircraft is really good, if a little overstuffed.

http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/18/40/46/21/duxfor10.jpg

The main museum has also become a bit overstuffed too but still nice to see. I agree wuith Gromit about the Blenny. It looks so much smaller in real life!

http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/18/40/46/21/duxfor13.jpg

As for the display, I have to admit to being a bit bored of watching endless spitfires & P51s so got more enjoyment from the beautiful airliners such as the DC3s, Beechcraft 18s and Lockheed Electra. Also the Red Bull B25, P38 & Corsair.
http://i35.servimg.com/u/f35/18/40/46/21/duxfor12.jpg]

The Avenger was nice, as were the Curtis-Wright collection of P36C, Hawk-75 in French markings & shiny P40C which made a change. The raptor made a nice change of pace but, yes, the commentary was over the top patriotism and bullshit at its best :-)

Yeah...I took a nap throughout the show...Just shows what going every year does to your enthusiasm, eh?

Got to the campsite before everyone else and put up 'Big Bertha' tent....Ripped an 8 inch hole in it right above my bed...Then one by one the fellas arrived...Frankenstein, Monkeynut ,Valisk, Looksharp and then Wandso and Roblex...and a guy called EAF_Red....so a good turn out at the campsite...

Then we headed into Cambridge later that evening and met up with Gromit and Bob who had travelled from Wales and had arrived late...Over the phone we talked them into coming to the Eagle as that was the only time we would all be there over the weekend so we met up with them too....Then we managed to meet up with Widukind and the JG4 squad which was great...They went home a bit early to get up bright for the show....The rest of us ended up in 'The Bath House' just next door as they always stay open for the last hour longer than The Eagle...Then back to the campsite...Crashed out around 2am...

Here's the pics....

To his left (right in the photo) is Balthasar
The guy with glasses giving Lew bunny ears is Bendwick
The one next to Lew in the blue polo shirt is Widukind
And last but not least the other one next to Lew in a leather jacket is Kruger

Is it a JG4 polo shirt that I see Widukind with?

Yes...With the JG4 badge...nice!!

It was really great to meet the JG4 guys...I knew that it would be tricky to meet up during the airshow as they were in the GoldPass area and our crowd don't go out on the Saturday night or the Sunday airshow...Having done this a few times now I knew that in 'The Eagle' was the only chance we got and time was short...We were with them towards the end of the evening and only for an hour or so before they went to their hotel...Could have done with a whole evening to chat cos it was entertaining when we met them and they had travelled so far...:(

I saw Widukind briefly at the airshow but later our guys wanted to leave early and catch the free bus before the rush...

I am not generally into that sort of technical guitar stuff but one of my playlists has G3 live with Frank Zappa doing 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama' which has some fantastic guitar. I am sorry I missed seeing JG4. Last time I saw Lewis that night he was in the middle of a phone call so maybe it was you lot he was talking to.

Guys, sorry I couldn't make it this year but glad you had a great time.

Can I ask a question though as you are all regulars at the show.

There has been a lot of outcry about the displays since the new CAA regulations came in including the removal of the 'tank bank' position.

I have read the Spitfire display was over incredibly quickly and seemed to lack much enthusiasm?

So what were your opinions of this years show, the displays, crowd position and was the bloody commentator still talking over the beautiful sound of the piston engines?

Will be there next year though, yay!

Cheers, MP

Seriously though....The display seemed tame...The event was total tickets bought online...and I wonder if that was the reason that although areas were closed there seemed to be less folks there this year...As I say the display seemed tamer than previous years because the aircraft flew further away than before..which was a shame...The grassy knoll was a great place to see the aircraft taking off at a 45% angle towards you...That has all gone...There was a barrier and a couple of security chaps just parallel to the entrance to the tank museum.....this probably means nothing if you only went in the gold pass area...That area is probably the same I guess...

First time they have had a jet there over the past 9 years I have been going...but was good to see and hear the noise...

So never been there Lew but I wonder what impact the Hunter Shoreham 2015 crash has had on displays of this sort.
I would not be surprised if its toned down a fraction as a result.

I enjoyed the show, but concur with Lew, it was definitely tame compared to previous years. Not a lot of aerobatics, mostly flying up and down the runway with the odd roll. The aircraft also seemed to be noticeably further from the crowd, maybe also higher? I can only assume this is due to new regs after the Shoreham crash.

There were only 7 spits flying and they weren't up for that long. Not sure how much this had to do with other shows on over the weekend.

Commentary was still god awful, some things don't change. :)

Well that would be a sad thing if true.
Not sure how costs of hosting would impact on safety of the displays themselves.

Anyway, still great to see these things flying, even if its straight and level at a greater distance away.

...I had forgotten that syrupy song they played while the F22 was flying :-)

What I remember of the spit display was that they basically flew a continuous figure of 8 in line astern; fast pass low down then climb and wing over and repeat all nose to tail. If there had just been a 109 in the lead then it would have been a standard Saturday night on ATAG with everyone shoulder shooting each other to get the kill first :-)

23425

Yes it was tamer but not as bad as I had expected. When they announced the new regs after Shoreham, we were being told that historic aircraft were going to be restricted to just flying up and down the runway but they did include loops and rolls, including loops from low level which surprised me. This is pretty much all that WW2 fighters have ever done at displays so really the only difference was that they did not get right down to head height and stayed a bit further from the crowd. They still got reasonably low at times.

It had been my first time in Duxford. I wasn't disappointed but expected a bit more. There were too many "usual suspects" in the air, mostly in such a distance even my 42 x zoom had trouble to catch them. But absolutely disgusting was this us-propaganda radio during the F-22 fyl-by. This mixture of narcissistic heroism and uncritical patriotism together with this is hard to bear for my (german) ears. But anyway, I made a short Viodeclip of my pictures... Cu, JG4_Henry

You don't seem to have anything good to say about any of this "...narcissistic heroism and uncritical patriotism?" I suppose we should have presented "Gimn Sovetskogo Soyuza" (The Soviet National Anthem) during a USAF display of NATO power? Allies don't insult each other!

If it offends you so much, please write to the air show coordinators, asking them to keep USAF aircraft out of the air shows you plan to visit. Believe me, we United States' taxpayers would just as soon provide air show support to countries like the United Kingdom who appreciate our "Narcissism and uncritical patriotism"! :hpyflying:

While I plead ignorance of UK air show rules, I do have some limited experience as a local coordinator for the Blue Angels as well as the Thunderbirds during the late 70's. Weather permitting, these demonstration teams always prefer the normal "High" show during demonstrations. This includes "Over the top" maneuvers and is obviously limited by cloud cover, ceiling and visibility. The videos of the weather at Duxford this year looked to me to be a little poor (Broken Clouds) for a "High" show, and may have necessitated the performance of a "low" show in which the teams and exhibits seem to just "Fly around". While it may seem "Tamer", prolonged low altitude demonstrations are pretty stressful for the pilots since the ever-present ground is always "right there".

A theatre critic once told me to always be suspicious of a program in which the audience spends more time enjoying the "set and sound" than they do with the play. This is just as true in air shows. If the music, narration and the color of the sky don't please you, maybe you should stay home and watch it on a DVD with Beethoven playing in the background. :lala:

The aircrews do the best they can with the conditions on "Show" day.

Thanks to all the photographers from those of us who live a little too far away to attend. You blokes put on a good show! :photographer:

Whilst I feel Henry is being a little over critical the Commentary and music played while the F22 was displaying was quite awful, the narrators voice was right out of Hollywood trailers for B action movies, the kind of "only one man can save the world" sort of comedy dialogue you got in Tropic Thunder , with statements of "air domination" and suchlike, it came over very teenager friendly but a bit cringe worthy and embarrassing!

maybe it's a cultural thing, but a Texan guy called Mike on the bus back to Cambridge was somewhat annoyed about it, he thought it made Americans look foolish.

Great to see the F22 though, never seen one fly before.

Both true, Gromit. I was indeed over critical and the music was awful :-)

To make it clear: I didn't want to offend the Americans at all. (in fact a third of my family is American...) I criticize the manner the US forces presented this plane. I looked at one of those big speakers and thought do they mean this serious or it is the attempt to copy a News Reel from Paul Verhoevens Starship Troopers (would you like to know more...?). I think this self image of the military made me angry somehow. The F-22 is a real burner and very impressive.

Thanks DD_FT...

Where did you guys meet up?....and what day?

This was in a pub in Cambridge, on the Saturday evening...
Dunno which pub...

And as for 'meet up'... well, it was more of a chance encounter, like some RAF Squadron could've experienced in the summer of 1940, over Kent, 'meeting up' with a bunch of Luftwaffe aircraft ... or vice versa ...

Edit: I remember it like this: when we entered the pub, there was this group of foreigners sitting at a table, finishing their dinner, and we kinda quickly found out they were German... but we ignored them, steered away kinda, we had to, as, well, you know, the very wise words a fighter pilot once wrote, "never from below or at same altitude... only from above...." and as the pub did not have a second floor, well, we were stuck at their level, and as they outnumbered us as well... what else could we do but ignore them?

Did not work in the end, as they royally recognized us :) :):):):):)
And then we had to get into the same frame ... for the picture.

Still, they left before we did, so, in the end, all of our pubs belong to us!
