Good luck. I'd like to see that operational. You see the signal on the secondary radio it is at 300Khz. Move off it and the signal goes away.

Could you go into more detail how all this works. I have been flying your mission with both ju88s and 111s and can follow the beacons which show up on my magnetic compass and can also get a white or amber light on the lorenz gauge, but the signal flying into the runway doesn't last very long and I seem to get more left/right signals when I'm in between RAF fighter and German fighter base than closer to the RAF fighter base.

Thanks

Torric,

I pick this mission in CloD 1c.forum, posted br Ataros, done by Charge from Sukhoi forum (link broken).

They just put related intems to navegation in small map (and unadequated) map to show how work.

In IL-2 1946 this system is associated with morse code (as IRL ?) - not audible in CloD.

BTW - in Fiat B-20 associated red green ligths are in navigator cockpit.

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/attachment.php?attachmentid=1860&d=1264172202

I start make some SP mission for Italian CAI night attack and try this radio navegation system - I enjoy then a lot in TD 4.10 patch for IL-2 1946.

No much information available of what this work in CloD - some good teoric posts made by Blackdog_KT and by other but always awaiting "MG patchs, better weather, beter manual"... Water under the bridge now.

What I get is use Long Range mast in Belgium coast point to specific target in England - need rotate antena in FMB (5 degrees in increment) and do some "calibration flights" :). Then I fly from departure base for this signal source and when they drop - plane over Antenna - I fly from the signal to target area, but unable to know when I reach, unless do a carefull Dead Recknoning...

In BoB Luftwaffe use two Lorenz signal crossing over target area - ie Rols Royce Merlin engine factory.

Horizontal needle indicating proximity of SBA Hat Antenna - at end of runway.
Vertical needle centered on signal - what is difficult to achieve, without audible Morse code.

Yes, 88 has the same Lorenz gauge. I don't remember which freq did what, but I was able to get a white light (88) and amber light (111) in the Lorenz gauge when flying over what I thought were the inner and outer markers. The only time this gauge seem to give and accurate left/right reading and not flapping around was out over the water between the RAF fighter and German fighter airfields.

I keep fiddle with this matter, make a single mission with a Radio NDB Beacon antenna - frequency 301 MHZ, placed around 10 KM from runway (Rosieres-en-Santerre).

And a SBA Hat Antenna (frequency 300 MHZ) next the end of a 1800 meters runway, so the runway is limited to 1700 meters (based on IL-2 1946 4.10 patch readme) for correct SBA Hat Antenna placement. At 300 meters of beginning of runway placed the Inner Marker, and at 3000 meters placed the Outer Marker, accord this drawing:

http://www.agder.net/la8ak/images/4ja14.gif

Measures take with object airfield runway - you can set then from 300 to 10000 meters (at least).

Pick the signal of NDB and navigate to then is easy. Tune the Secondary Nav. Frequency* to 301 MHZ and use the P - S needle in Magnetic Compass (He-111) to determine signal bearing and adjust the Repeater Compass, so is matter of keep Repeater Compass needle (the small plane) centered.

BTW - I dont know if this procedure is correctly, but work for me.

When the NDB antenna is over fly, the P - S needle revert, and maintaining the previous HDG the airfield is reached.
Edit - In this specif mission, since the plane start at North of NDB and runway.

For some reason the Outer Marker (3 KM from runway) is not reported when the aircraft fly over then... Incorrect altitude?

Only around ~ 2 KM of beginning of runway the AFN-1 (tuned to 300 MHZ) pick the signal of SBA Hat antenna and is able to indicate course deviation.
The Inner Marker is reported by red light in AFN-1 (He-111) when the aircraft fly over then, indicating the beginning of runway at 300 meters.

Well, when the AFN-1 pick the SBA Hat signal the runway lights are already visible, so dont makes sense use it...

The mission time is 23:50 - so the things are a bit dark. ;)

By pure chance the moon can be used as a reference for navigation. :)

* Tune Secondary Nav. Frequency to Radio NDB Beacon signal only work to evaluate the distance from them - more intense the signal, closest - not for guidance, the vertical needle of AFN-1 swing crazy left - right.

Sokol1

Very nice. It would make sense if the SBA Hat had alot more range and a wider field to pick it up rather than the narrow band that it is now. That way you could pick up the signal 50km away and ride it in to the runway, at the first marker start your descent from a pre-determined altitude, second beacon you would be on final approach. (First marker for me is out of range, prolly why it doesn't light up)

Works the same with ju88 and stuka.

For some reason the Outer Marker (3 KM from runway) is not reported when the aircraft fly over then... Incorrect altitude?

Apparently, yes.

Edit - My observations about altitude over Outer/Inner Mark.

Outer - Need overflow at around 300 meters of altitude (at 350 is not detected) or bellow.
Inner - Need overflow at around 200 meters of altitude (at 250 is not detected) or bellow - watch the ground. ;)

BTW - Inner/Outer Marker antenna dont need power (passive devices???) and work without SBA HAT Antenna presence.

See, if I fly over Outer Marker (placed at 3000 mts before runway) at around 200 meters of altitude the AFN-1 light flash.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8747/lorenz1jpg.jpg

AFN-1 needle still starts work only between the Outer and Inner Marker. Too close to be useful.

NDB Antenna must be placed more closest of runway, due short range of SBA Hat Antenna signal. See post bellow about this.

Conclusion: Not practical like in IL-2 1946 4.10 but blinding landing in IL-2 CloD is doable.

BTW - In this test I place SBA Hat Antenna 800 meters after runway, like:

http://www.nva-flieger.de/tl_files/images/ffm/fnav/ils-korbanski.gif
Thanks OBT~Miguel21. ;)

Not see any difference, but at least it leaves the end of runway clear.

Seems that Blinding Landing can by done by Autopilot - mode 22 (He-111).
See what happen with control column when this mode is selected, with AFN1
tuned to SBA Hat Antenna.

I am not sure, but I seemed to hear a continuous tone, mute, at one of the landings ...

Find the "Lost Elo".

... the vertical needle of AFN-1 swing crazy left - right.

To AFN-1 work correctly is need keep the "Course Autopilot Preset" equaled with "Directional Gyro" reading, using "Course Autopilot Adjust", so the AFN-1 needle is ably to track SBA Hat Antenna signal correctly - at distance (~10KM).

http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/4186/lorenz10.gif (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/837/lorenz10.gif/)

If there is much variation between reading in the two instruments, the AFN-1 needle goes "crazy".

Is not need engage Autopilot Mode 22 (probable make a automated landing, if you approach is correctly...), adjust "Course Autopilot Preset" to allow proper operation of AFN-1.

End that Lorenz in CloD is more "sophisticated" than in IL-2. ;)

I tried several approaches with autopilot on, both mode 1 and 2 and did not pick up a signal on the AFN-1 until the same time (right around the town outside the runway). What i did stumble on, is when flying away from the airfield back to the beacon between about 500-800 meters or so I could ride the signal all the way to the beacon if I stayed with in the left/right signal area.

So I moved waypoint #1 to the sw of the airfield, #2 on the airfield to simulate approaching the airfield with another NDB there (not very good at FMB). As I hit the airfield I turned towards the beacon you placed (heading N) at about 600 meters, after a little while I picked up the AFN-1 signal and rode it and the ndb to the beacon. Input a reciprocal course, circled back around, pick up the afn-1 again and ride it right back to the airfield. Seems to work ok, but to keep the signal I'm too high to hit the outer beacon light, so I figured I could use the signal strength meter to figure out where to start my descent. This is only worth doing of course if there was near zero visability.

This thing is really confuse. See, I tune "Secondary Nav.Frequency" to 300 MHZ = SBA Hat Antenna and the
AFN-1 pick the signal, intensity and deviation (right), an I am at ~10 KM (1 grid) from runway.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8507/afn1.gif (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/12/afn1.gif/)

I think that R22 Mode of Autopilot is to do the glide path - from outer to inner mark - so if pilot see inner mark signal (flash light in AFN-1),
turn off the Autopilot and make a final landing.

Yep, I'm tuned into 300 with secondary nav freq, and tuned to 301 with primary, I only pick up left/right right about the time of the town. For some reason it has a longer range for me once I pick up the signal near the airfield.

R22 mode is for level bombing, I don't know if your engaging it at the outer marker and getting the drop in alt, as that is what it does to pick up speed and level out for level bombing. Could be for both, I don't know.

I don't know if you increased the range as you seem to have added objects on the above pic right by your plane on the map.

I don't know if you increased the range as you seem to have added objects on the above pic right by your plane on the map.

This object is just another NDB antenna, at 302 MHZ - to pre guidance to near airfield.

I test again, this time measure distance in map with Map Tools:

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/6849/lorenzdetected.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/543/lorenzdetected.jpg/)

In this case the SBA are detected at ~25 KM - and notice that plane are no in direction of SBA, and DI read different from Autopilot Course... ???
When SBA are detected the message "Join the circuit" is show.

But has a problem: sometimes in the path to runway after SBA detection the signal is lost.
Apparently the signal of SBA beam is very narrow, so beyond the course toward SBA the altitude should also be considered, above or bellow certain altitude the signal is lost... I am not sure about...

The possibility to R22 mode of Autopilot can be used for Lorenz was raised in post of Blackdog_Kt (CloD guru in early days :) ) explaining JU-88 Autopilot, but he's not sure about.

Anyway dont make much sense expect a "automated" landing with WWII era technology. ;)

Still the same...

The signal beam of Lorenz in CloD is too narrow, difficult to pick an track in AFN-1.
This, more the lack of audible signal (Morse Code), make the system almost unusable. :thmbdwn:

Thanks Sokol1,
In my way i took a NDB to the End of the Runway. There are good ICAO Maps to download. With the ICAO Maps you are able to get the correct Landingcourse. With Kurssteuerung and the Needle of the Peilgerät with "P" in Landingcourse is a good Bypass for the Bug. Now we are able to find our Gartenzaun and Landing at Nighttimes.
