Well hello and thanks for dropping by to no doubt ask "where is my patch?", "haven't you finished yet?", "this isn't what you promised!"....."don't worry, we're happy to wait :) "..choose your phrase, all I can say, we're still here, still plugging away and still generating content

Depending on whether your glass is half full or half empty, hopefully you'll be able to drink from it in the knowledge that we are still here, still deeply involved toiling away and determined to get Patch v5.00 completed before England win the another World Cup in Football :) (okay, most likely a lot sooner!) :devilish:

As always when it get to the Summer months work invariably slows down due to family life and being able to see the sun again so I have had to really bang on some email boxes just to be able to get something to show. This doesn't mean there isn't a lot going on, but most of it is uninteresting, non-visual stuff (like FM coding, a small dial here and there) so the modellers consider this not worth sending me....and that means I get nothing to show from them (certain departments). Others are also so entrenched in what they are doing that again they would rather spend time on the model than renders so I end up with only bits and pieces to show.

However.....I do try, do knock on email doors and hopefully this small summary will keep you going?

Here goes!

So currently some of our modellers are involved with various projects and here are some images I have been authorised to let show :-)

Bridges:

23168 23169

A little bit of defensive weaponry - 81mm Mortar:

23170

Water Tower:

23171

Somewhere to park an aircraft...or something else? :)

23172

Now a few vehicles:

AEC Dorchester:

23173

M3A1 Tank:

23174 23175 23176 23177

Fiat-Ansaldo L6 40:

23178

And now some more aircraft external and internal shots.

CR42:

23179

Early (very) cockpit work on the Martlet

23180

Dewoitine D520:

23181 23182 23183

Spitfire Vb:

23184 23185 23186

Hurricane MKIIB with loadout:

23187

Wellington Cockpit nearing completion:

23188 23189

and finally here is a screenshot from the new map (without textures, buildings, landscape details, etc, etc) just to prove it does actually exist and is well underway. There is still a lot of work to do with the new theatre but it is underway, along with so much more but if I explain everything now I'll not have anything for the coming updates, so here is the first public image showing the map, created with an Alpha version of Team Fusions Map Tool. The Map Tool has been incredibly frustrating for our main coder, having already re-written in 3-times, but now it is significantly progress although not complete and will allow map-makers to drag, drop, add, build, plot, overlay.....but not just yet!

So here's the first official image with plenty more to come over the following weeks and months.

23190

I can only say we at TF are doing our best, it has taken way longer than we expected but mainly because we keep finding new ways to speed up workflow, small fixes, large fixes, etc, etc....we just want v5.00 to be the best it can be and hopefully once it's out, the community will see just how wide ranging the possibilities are for all modding groups to help us make the best Community WW2 Combat Flight Sim available.

As always thanks to Artist for his unending Bugtracker work. Here is the latest news from him:

And finally, having got my hands on the Beaufighter to test, I took it for a short spin and strafed a convoy of trucks.....heavily defended by flak. Not really a video showing huge amounts of stuff, but there is texture and effects work on display as-well of course as the beaufighter Cockpit :)

That's all for now, cheers, MP/TF

How long do the aircraft take to do once you got your tools hammered out? Is it getting quite a bit easier now?

Excellent vid as always TF! I thought I was watching '633 Squadron' all over again albeit with Beau's (Beau = Beautiful, right?) Parts of the vid reminded of that famous bit of film showing typhoons firing rockets at railway lines after D Day!

Fantastic! Hugely appreciated by all of us! Salute!

We are planning to have all the new and old tanks and vehicles in the game playable with corrected views and gunsights.

Re. the Beau: The external model you are looking at is the Mk IF with a different paintjob... but we will remove the radar aerials for a correct IC model.

IC will also have capability to carry two 250 lb, or two 500 lb bombs. IC's will have two models... one with the six .303's, one without. (the MG's were removed on later Coastal Command versions)

No torpedoes. (unless someone can provide original documents showing otherwise) Torpedoes were first used in the Mk VI.

There will be two engine types for the Beau. Early versions will have the Hercules III with 1400 hp at +4 boost, later versions the Hercules XI with 1505 hp at +6.75 boost. Max. sea level speed for the Mk XI type is 306 mph/492 kmh, max speed at altitude, 323 mph/520 kmh at 15,000 ft... so it will be faster than the Hurricane I on the deck, slightly slower at altitude.

From the IF/IC manual:

I was hoping for Malta, but I'll be very happy to fly in N Africa as well. When was the FW 190 introduced in NA? Would be nice to eventually have that, though I can appreciate how much work building one would be.

Besides the obvious gorgeous work on the Beaufighter, in the video i saw the flak gun flashing when they fire. I believe this is something that is more noticible now, isnt it? Also the flak barriage is impressive, along with the shrapnel hitting the plane, its more audible now.

Am i right?

I have a buddy returning to the PC after leaving the PS4, he asked me about the i5 750. I looked it up and I was impressed by it as a first gen i5. I love the i5s but mine are 4th gen. He has an old computer but apparently built a beast in the day with 16GB 1600. Your awesome videos proves what I told him. All he needs is a new GPU. I don't know if I can turn him to flights sims, but I will damn sure try. :D

Hey TF I remember reading that after the TF patch it will be easier to add more aircraft individually. I may be miss-remembering as there have been a fair few updates, rumours etc since I first joined the community.

Would this mean that others from the community with the talent, time and willingness to build to your exacting standards might be able to add an aircraft in the future?

I'm also curious about map size. Due to there being a lot of nothing in the desert and ocean is making the map more simple or is there some sort of land generator?

The North Africa campaign took place over a much larger area then the map we have now. France and Southern England have a lot more stuff going on in them. Is this map easier to bang out a larger area than building Europe?

Is the map itself one of the more challenging tasks?

I'm pretty stoked on the maps we could build for the server. Will some of the mission builders have some early access to help release missions at launch or will you build a mission set in house to release when you're done?

In answer to your questions:

Map:

a) We are not confirming where the Theater is.

b) I am not the map creator, but as far as I understand, the new Theater map will be slightly larger than the existing North West Europe/English Channel map. It will be simpler to build than the existing map because it has a lower population density... ie. few towns, roads, etc.

c) The map is one of the most challenging parts of building TF 5.0... There was no tool to build new maps in the game code... the existing map has a huge series of bugs, we can't simply rework it... we actually have had to build our own Map Tool... which requires many hundreds of hours of very boring and difficult code work.

Models:

After a number of experiences with modelers who want to go their own way, and who don't understand how important it is to have standardization for the addition of new aircraft, etc. we have decided it makes no sense for people to work outside of TF and outside our system.

Each new aircraft/object is not just the work of a 3D modeler, it is also the work of Coders/FM programmers/Weapons/Damage/Sound/Historical Research specialists, etc. etc.

Each of these people starts work when the project is initiated... and if the original 3D artist makes fundamental errors which cause delays or the cancellation of their work, then all the others have their time wasted.

To give one example:

A 3D model does not simply go into the game and work... it has to be linked into the game's physics/weapons/damage engines with code. Each 3D part of an aircraft, of which there are hundreds, should use naming conventions which work with the standard... if for example, ailerons are named incorrectly, then the coder will need to go back and re-name them... a model with incorrectly named parts is a huge mess which triples or quadruples the amount of time the coder has to take to integrate it into the game. If a modeler is working outside TF, they will inevitably make this mistake.

Then there is the issue of commitment, which relates closely to training... every modeler who comes in has to be trained to some extent or another. For example, our 3D supervisor has to spend many hours meeting, teaching, PM'ing, explaining, etc. If after all this, the same modeler then decides they will give up, all that time is wasted. For the senior people in TF, this is extremely frustrating. I have put in hundreds of hours doing research and FM's for aircraft which never got past a few crude preliminary drawings... sending 100's of MB of files and details to modelers, only to see nothing result. People join TF, promising the world, get all this effort invested in them, and then they do nothing. We call these people 'Tourists'... they come in, look around, make a few posts, and then leave, never to be heard from again.

At this point, we have had quite a number of models come to nothing after the modelers turned out to be 'Tourists' making promises. It is actually worse for TF to have a Tourist join us, than not... they waste time and energy which could be used to work on the other projects which are ongoing and which are being done by real committed modelers.

So no, we don't see opening up to modelers working outside TF.

Thanks for taking the time to give me such a thorough answer. It makes sense and I liked the "Tourist" bit. I've had friends want to help me do some renovations and they end up being more of a pain in the butt. Except my best friend I've known since we where kids. He knows his stuff and isn't lazy. Plus he's small so I send him into spots I don't fit. It's pretty good too those places usually are itchy and full of spiders.

So if someone wants to basically just apply to join TF and actually mean it so you don't cause head banging on desks.

Anyway, cheers.

Couple more;

Have all the map tools been done now mostly other than little things you figure out along the way?

Post release it will you as TF be able to more easily release a/c one by one?

Last question and it's a bit out there. Would it even be possible to have an aircraft carrier you can land on with this engine?

Answers:

a) Work on the map tool is ongoing... improvements and changes all the time.

b) As we learn, and more modelers get comfortable with the 3D process, more people get trained in writing the code, etc. etc... releasing aircraft will be easier.

c) One of our coders has already managed to have aircraft land on a carrier... but it was a crude low res carrier... we don't have a finished carrier... and we don't have deck wires, aircraft hooks implemented in the code yet. Whether this happens for TF 5.0 is unclear... but likely will not.

Well, for those wondering what it takes to make a map tool, here's an example (no, sadly none of the existing ones work for CLOD):

You can download the limited demo and read the documentation to get an idea of what is behind making a map tool from scratch.

My point was not to show how easy/hard it is to use that software but an example of what a programmer needs to create from scratch to create a software for map editing.

The L3/35 (L3/33 or L3/38) tankette, the FIAT Panda of tanks. I hope TF will give us this litle fellow as well. I would really like to help 3D modelling, I can do CAD but I am awful with Photoshop.

Just to let the Hurricane lovers know... (new research), the Hurricane II Fighter-bombers will be able to carry either two 500 lb bombs or two 250 lb bombs.

Obviously the heavier and the larger the bombs, the worse the performance. ;)

No rockets till 1943. (and you really don't want rocket rails on Hurricanes... speed is horribly affected)

Presumably this principle will apply to all types (i.e. the Stuka)....

Hey guys and TF!

Been away for a while, due to changes in life with health and now retirement and a move, things have settled down and getting back into my beloved flight simming.
I was thinking coming back that TF5 would probably be out now, but I see still being worked on - and that is fine, the updates are looking fantastic! Nice also to know I have not yet missed out on this great update yet.
Many thanks to all you guys for keeping this alive and moving along!!

Hopefully I can remember how to fly these things and get back to some good campaign flying again. Maybe even see you in the skies someday!

Lol Snapper, maybe someday - certainly now it raises the possibility. I even have a headset with mic now.
Got to get back in the plane and brush off a lot of dust first!

Thanks for the welcoming back!!
