You might have to be more specific in your question...Are you saying you don't have a joystick?...I don't know anyone who doesn't have all the important keys bound to joystick and throttle...

Welcome to the community and forums hawkhero...~S~

Checkout the 'Beginners Guide'...for info and tips...It will save you a heap of time in getting up to scratch.....and its a really fun learning curve anyway..

Also try youtube for startup procedures on all the aircraft...

I recommend getting in the online server as soon as you can take off if that's ultimately where you'd like to fly...I flew single player for 30 minutes before I took the plunge...The ATAG online server is a great environment to learn and there's not really any damage you can do in there as a new player.....It is also mission based just with real players trying to foil your objectives...If you are concerned then pick an airstrip furthest from the front line (there always is one or two on every map) and get some alt before you go hunting...You'll get tagged a lot but there are tricks you learn out of pure desperation in those first few weeks that you'll be able to use later...I know cos I still use the same tricks I learned then too because they work...and never underestimate the stall to get you out of a tight fix...That sometimes works too...

TeamSpeak is optional but you'll learn a whole lot faster with it even if you say very little once you are on the server...You are quite welcome to just listen if you feel more comfortable with that....so you don't actually need a mic either...Try it and see!

Hi Hawk,
Assuming u do have a joystick (even a cheap one like the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro will do) then setting up keyboard commands is very much up to your own personal preferences.
A good rule of thumb is put controls that u use very frequently like prop pitch, radiator, on the stick.
Other controls that u only use once or twice in a sortie like undercarriage, brakes or flaps map to a key or key combination.
Until they become 2nd nature u can print them onto a sheet of paper and tape it to the side of ur monitor (done that plenty of times myself).
One thing I have found useful is don't put controls on ur stick that cause a big problem if u hit it accidently, eg. undercarriage down.
Hope this helps and hope u enjoy the sim.
Post back if there are any specifics u need clarified.

Welcome, hawkhero!

I'm actually new here as well (joined yesterday!) but I'm coming from a War Thunder background so have a perspective on key bindings. I'm still a newbie when it comes to flight sims so I only have a cheap Logitech Extreme 3D joystick and TrackIR - no throttle quadrant or rudder pedals (yet). As such, I have most of my engine and secondary controls on my keyboard. I'd be interested in what other veterans think of my approach as well.

There are 6 buttons on the base of the Logitech Extreme 3D and four thumb buttons around the hat switch. I use the four thumb buttons for view settings (e.g., lean to gunsight, reset view, enable/disable TrackIR), but I don't like to use the 6 buttons on the base. I've heard from people that you should tie your most used functions to your joystick, but I frankly don't like the buttons since they're positioned awkwardly and are hard to press. There is also a tiny throttle lever on the base of the joystick, but I don't use it because I tied most of my other frequently used controls to the keyboard - which brings me to the core of your question.

When I play, I barely have to move my left hand away from the left side of the keyboard. Here goes:

Throttle: Ctrl (down) and Shift (up)
Radiator: Z (down) and X (up)
Oil Radiator: C (down) and V (up)
Prop Pitch: A (down) and S (up)
Mixture: Q (down) and W (up)
Engage WEP: Alt + Shift

This setup for engine controls has been helpful for me since I never have to take my left hand off the bottom left area of the keyboard. I am now learning to fly German planes and Bf 109E 1-3 for example doesn't have auto prop pitch, so it definitely helps that the controls for prop pitch is right by the throttle.

For trim, I pretty much use the classic WASD layout and Q and E for rudder, like so:
Elevator: Alt + W (up) and Alt + S (down)
Aileron: Alt + A (up) and Alt + D (down) (NOTE: I think most planes don't have aileron trim so this is kind of useless)
Rudder: Alt + Q (up) and Alt + E (down)
To reset trims, I use Alt + Z, X, or C for Aileron, Elevator, and Rudder, respectively.

Here are some others:
Zoom: Alt + 1 (out) and Alt + 2 (in)
Turn on gunsight: ~ (This is a carryover from War Thunder)
Toggle Flaps: F
Toggle Undercarriage: G
Toggle Emergency Undercarriage: Alt + U

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but hopefully this helps! I have other commands that I don't need much in other parts of the keyboard, but the point is that I've concentrated what I needed to one end of the keyboard.

Nice approach. This few buttons on joy base can be used maybe for startup only functions like wheel shocks, fuel cock, wheel brakes... I too use WASD for trim.

Hawkhero

Is important take in mind that different aircraft in CLoD has different needs in controls - some controls, due bug is inverted from one to other, e.g. PP in Spit and Bf 109, use the SAVES in controls to deal with this. In some aircraft flaps ins ON/OFF, in other is ON (hold) -OFF (neutral) - ON (Hold) in other is Hold for up or down.

In Flight School is listed the more important commands for each aircraft.

http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=128

A detail, CloD don't has a button for "LOAD DEFAULT CONTROLS", if you mess the controls is need delete the "ConfUser.ini" for game copy a "default" from game folder, so don't touch in files inside game install folder, only in Documents\1C SoftClub...

Eventually if want can make your custom controls the default one (I do this).

BTW - The "default" controls has conflict in Left Mouse Click, if want use this for fire gunner weapons, remove the LMB click assigned in camera for some "HOLD to..." that has no practical use.=, but prevents fire and move mouse.
