If i had the money for something "frivolous", i think this would be a huge thrill, and for me, very moving.
Just to actually be in the air in a Spitfire (or any of the warbirds actually) and to feel/imagine even the tiniest bit of what it must have been like for the young men who lived and died in them during the war, and to let the history seep in during the flight, would be quite an experience.

I'd certainly rather do a half hour of that than lie on a hot beach for a week somewhere.

Ask if they do trips over Tobruk... you could bail out and do a bit of both.

Ten years ago at a local air show I signed up for a 20 minute ride in a Harvard. Not quite a Spitfire :P but...it was a thrill nonetheless. Once aloft the pilot let me do a couple of very uncoordinated turns, plus when he took back control he did a wingover as we briefly attacked a barn down below. Very cool and it cost a bit less, about $120 CDN on my Visa card IIRC.

Lewis documented a Tiger Moth flight here, once, as well.

Much as I love Spits the £90 for this 13 minute adventure was by far more worth it...in an older aircraft too...

Also my house is one of the 6 in a row that just start to get obscured by the wheel at 5.45...

That looks awesome Lew

Classic wings also offer a Tiger moth experience from £129, and you get to take the controls too, http://www.classic-wings.co.uk/tiger-moth-flights/

The best flight that I have ever done was a 30 min helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon in 2011 which was fantastic, and such an adrenaline rush, but a flight in a Spitfire has to be the ultimate, although way out of my price range right now.

Who knows, if work picks up and I can get some overtime in between now and July, I could always incorporate a Tiger Moth flight into my trip to Duxford for Legends in July

With 8% of alcohol this is the equivalent of 100 octane fuel!

Oh well, I would even offer an imperial pint, because its you.

Reading the fine print, I didn't see anything about dual controls, just dual seats. I would need to be able to FLY it for that price. Then again, maybe just flying in it would be thrill enough.

If you wonder if they have dual control they do, they also have a mini museum in the hangar with Hurricane, Jeeps, other MK Spit and they building a 109.

Nice guys and very pro

In my opinion, if you want to experience flying an aircraft which has the 'feel' of a WWII fighter, the best bet is the T-6 Texan/Harvard.

This was the advanced trainer for both the US and RAF throughout most of WWII. It was an aircraft which had most of the controls of a WWII front line fighter, but with a top speed of approx. 200 mph. It had very similar maneuver parameters and stall behaviour... it was designed to allow training pilots to transition.

There are many companys which offer flights in these aircraft... usually for under $1000 U.S.

The instructor takes the 'hero for a day' through aerobatic training.

Then you decided to spawn at Gravesend whilst everyone else spawned in at Eastchurch.........went some convoluted route across southern England........failed to catch up with your Flight........and then decided to get shot down!

Immediate DFC recinded.

I did exactly the same from Goodwood a few years ago on a clear, cold October morning - could see for miles. Also had the pleasure of a good chinwag with an ex-special forces chap cleaning his Chipmunk (got to sit in that). He flew special ops troops into tricky areas in an Islander.

, and you get to take the controls too,

At 8.35 you'll see the pilot in the rear waving and leaving his hands on the fuselage to show the camera that I was in control....Well, when I say 'in control'.....er...you get the idea...That was the moment I wished I had worn my dark brown trousers...

We pulled a loop over Hayling Island and was surprised how tight it was. I was bricking it before going up - made the mistake of googling tiger moth videos and ended watching a load of crashes...

Having said that climbing out of Goodwood was fantastic and the negative worries slipped away

Lew, i also remember seeing picture of you sitting in a Spit, which cost, was it 5 or 10 pounds? That in itself would be great, in that you can probably still see and feel how the cockpit felt and picture where the controls would be etc. Nice!

A friend from the ARC took me for a flight in the Stearman in July 2016. A great experience both in flying and it being from the hallowed Duxford grass.
I got a bit of hands/feet on controls plus got to steer us back along the perimeter track after landing.

Payment was a wipe down. Of the aircraft, just to be clear.

RAF Hendon have one you can sit in. £10.00 I paid last year. You get a little chat from the museum guy, wiggle the controls and go through a start up with an audio track. Lasted about 15 minutes I think.
