This will be our 10th year........Beers, WW2 aircraft, Good Company...It doesn't get much better than that!

Already have my tickets, and I am looking forward to attending the show this year and meeting up with you guys.

I will be traveling down to Duxford on the Saturday morning, and going back home straight after the show, so I won't be able to join you out on the town in Cambridge or at the camp site, but I am sure that I will be enjoying a Spitfire ale or two at the show :bsign:

Should be fun, see you there

Yep...got the ticket safely bought and will be there with Vamps...sharing the luxury of Lew's Curry and Tent on the Friday and Saturday night!

And I'm quite certain it will all be polite, civilised and perfectly above board...so none of that sniggering! Ha ha!

Don't worry, Lew! Vamps has promised to wash up!

Senior Day Out ticket acquired some time ago.

The Matron, here at the veterans care home, has agreed a weekend pass for me so I am all set. It has of course been some time since I camped out........must have been the campaign in the Sudan, just before Omdurman........they don't like it up em you know!

Anyway as I shall be away from the memsahib I shall still expect certain standards to be maintained in camp. No f**ting in the tent after lights out Marlow. If I am doing the washing up you are on latrine detail so bring your marigolds!

Looking forward to it.

Have faith lads, i have some experience in these matters. You know, i am a survivor of the once infamous Bathurst 1000 parties.
Held in a large tent in a suburban backyard, and designed to celebrate/ emulate the destruction and carnage involved in this gruelling motor race.
Each participant, was required to bring a comfy chair, sufficient alcohol and an implement of destruction.
The implements varied widely: chainsaws sledge hammers, flame throwers, penny bungers (big nasty fire crackers) etc.
The general idea was that when a participant inevitably left his comfy chair to relieve himself,
his chair was then fair game for the others to attack.
Needless to say by the end of the 6 hour race, intact seating was a rare commodity and
all but those with the strongest of bladders was reduced to sitting on the floor amongst a pile of debris.
Oh my miss spent youth !

Hey Vamps.

If I win the lottery between now and then count me in

For those who don't know Bathurst is our big touring car race in Australia.

Massive event that I went to a number of times in my teens and worked at in 1992.

Night work on top of the hill surrounded by 25000 drunken imbeciles with a history of massive fights, property destruction and general use and abuse of alcohol over a 3-4 day period. Dangerous times to be in uniform.. but what an adrenalin rush.

Anyone who wants to experiance hanging out with bogans, the October long weekend in Bathurst New South Wales must surely be your destination of choice! :-)

Nork
Apr-04-2017, 04:17
Re Bathurst, yep went to the event one year Pat but was smart enough to get off the mountain before nightfall.
Hope you win the lottery mate. Would be great to see you there.

You never know Pat I might get to visit Oz and Dunbogan before you win the lottery.

Early days, but have started looking and planning a possible visit to your great country maybe next year sometime. Never been to Australia and my wife and I are not getting any younger.

Think I'll give Bathurst a miss though! Haha!

Looking forward to meeting Nork at Duxford.

If you do make it to Oz, Dunbogan and the Port Macquarie region is truly beautiful and definitely worth a look.
And yes, Bathurst is best watched on TV from a great distance if your older than about 17. :)

When I watched that there was a soundtrack of Yotheguy playing in my head.

"erm 'SEAS... no!!!... don't turn so hard Ahhhhhh... you are gonna stall it man... ahhh!!!.... 'Seas, serious... don't turn so hard. It's not a Hurricane dude.

then the soundtrack goes silent.

But only because I can't bare listening to the "See... see that?... it told you so . man... I told you so.

Then he pulls some dumb arse manoeuvre and says simply "Rad"

Which is a bit weird really given that I mainly use ailerons, elevator and a touch of rudder myself.

Well i would love to make it to Duxford 2017, but I can't. I hope to in the next year or two though.

But what i can do is make a suggestion.... and here it is:

Every year the DAG (Duxford ATAG Gang) has a theme song for the year.

I think that it might be fun to submit your "song of the year", and see if it is picked by? maybe the group going votes? That bit can be figured out by those with clearer minds than mine. And Lew can blast it out of the boombox I'm sure he must take.....

Anyhow, here is my pick for the DAG 17 group...... cuz it's gonna be a bunch of young dudes going, right?!

And my choice is, "All The Young Dudes", by Mott The Hoople.

I feel it is a good choice, cuz Bowie did a cover of it at his Isle of Wight show, and goodness knows, both red and blue hang around that place a lot (although the blues tend to be uninvited guests on the Isle)......

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToXGVcrgNZA

Well I think it might be fun. Anyone care to join in?

Cheers! :)

Never tried it, but according to following link: "If you exit your airplane/helicopter by hitting LCTRL+E three times, you find yourself in 1st person view of your pilot, and even have control over him." So it seems you have to bail out and then walk to your aircraft.

We, (myself, my good lady wife and a friend of ours) will be getting there early, hopefully when the gates open (I think at about 8am) and will be looking around the museum and other exhibits in the morning before taking up our positions for the show at around lunch time.

Don't know about you guys, but when we've been in the past we like to get near the American air museum to watch the show as you get a great view of the aircraft taxiing past pretty close after landing from there.

I have some of your mobile numbers, so I am sure I will find you.

Hi Guys...I am defo bringing 18 pints of draught Rebellion 'Roasted Nuts' bitter in a small keg! It's a blindin' beer....my Dad's favourite. It might just last until Sunday am but I'm thinking if everybody brings similar amounts I'll take most of it home again....which won't be a problem...Dad'll help me finish it, but feel free to take this into account. And it would be a crime to drink it out of plastic glasses so could everybody bring a single glass, or personalised pewter mug for 'alcoholic liquors, the consumption of?' Spot of luxury, don't yer think?

Yes, Vamps...you can bring a bucket, if you insist! :stunned:

I have a few inflatable mattresses...safari bed and lilos....So you won't be on the mat...You will want to be at least 5 inches off the floor...Cold hard floor even with a mat is not ideal...I just got to test the air beds tomoro...

I thought Tesco did airbed for £5?

Just back from my night of shame with the Jolly Boys.

Big thanks to Lewis for the hosting and the making me feel so welcomed and to the diehards Looksharp and Vasilis for the great entertainment and tails of daring don't! Great Thai Curry too!!

Meeting up with players current and old was great fun and seeing Nork nonchalantly walk into camp with a rucksack full or beer was everything I wanted my Australian man to be! - It was also great to meet Mystic Puma in the Eagle later in the evening although both he and Nork the sense to bail before our visit to Uncle's Franks mobile Keeeeeeebab and chicken shack.

Sadly its likely that Seas has blotted the Rag Tag copy book with his Gypsy good looks and frankly casual attitude to tent placement (it was 6 inches to the left of the patch indicated) something was clearly beyond the pale for the Caravan Club officials.. so we'll have to smuggle him in next year- Still, his handwritten sign offering a sit in his (Triumph) Spitfire for £5 was class tho...

Trip Advisor rating - RECOMMENDED!

Cunningly - I split the event into the "get mashed and sleep in tent with the boyz" phase - followed by a day of R&R at home before the second "go to Sunday show, fresh as a daisy and be able to focus" phase on the Sunday.

That was quick Lase!

Thanks for posting.

It was absolutely brilliant and a great pleasure to meet up with virtual friends, for the first time, who are now Real Life friends.

This was the largest gathering for some time and a nicer bunch of chaps you could not wish to meet. There will be much more of this posted over the next few days I am sure, so watch this space.

I had to 'bail' after the one night of camping due to an RL commitment. Thanks to ATAG_Lewis (Lew) for acting as host and providing the tent, associated camping equipment and Thai curry. (Sorry I didn't get the coffee going this morning!!!). Thanks to Looksharp, Valisk, ATAG_Frankenstein and ATAG_Monkeynut, all old hands at this, for making us 'noobs' so welcome.

I have met Lew before but it was special for me to meet my 'Rag Tag' buddies ATAG_Marlow, Highseas and ATAG _Laser for the first time. RAG TAGS ROCK!

A special international guest appearance was made by Nork. An Australian gentleman and all round nice guy. A pleasure to have met you and spend time in your company Nork. Glad you could make it and enjoy the rest of your European holiday.

We also met up with ATAG_Knight and Moose. Great to meet you chaps and fry in the Duxford sun with you.

An unexpected and enjoyable meeting was was with Larry (ACG) who produces the wonderful screenshot scenes. He happened to recognise Lew and introduced himself. It was great talking with him and discussing all things CloD and his screenshot/videos. A very nice and friendly Swiss gentleman.

Last nights visit to the 'Eagle' pub in Cambridge was a first for me and highlighted by meeting Mystic Puma and of course talking about all things CloD. Really enjoyed your insights and comments MP and a pleasure to meet you.

Such a lot happened in a short time scale but it has made it a memorable weekend for this ATAG/CloD 'noob'.

The airshow was great the weather kind and the company very special. A bit like the sim only in Real Life.

Well said Vamps.

About 18 months ago a few noobs started flying together and learning this brilliant but difficult to master flight sim, and we started to be known as the Rag Tags.

Along the way some ATAG vets such as Lewis and Yotheguy have dropped by to help us out and gradually we have improved together,( well, the others have, I'm still rubbish) and we have become great buddies, so it was awesome to finally get to meet up with fellow Rag Tags and others who I don't get to fly with as much like Moose, Frankenstein and Nork.

Overall, a great day was had by all, and I too am already looking forward to next year, I may even give the camping part a go if I can get a weekend pass from the missus:)

I think I happened at the end of the Horseman's spot (which was a lesson in close formation flying BTW) but it didn't interrupt the show as it all seemed to be done by the manual without much drama. Not that you'd think that looking at AMP and the Sun's headlines of "HORROR IN THE SKY" and "TERROR AS OUT OF CONTROL VINTAGE PLANE HEADS TOWARDS CROWD" - these pillocks need to take a cold bath and consider themselves and there true worth to society....less about news more about click bait.

TBH there was more consternation at the "Filled Dogs and Fries" trailer when people were discovering the joys of paying £10.00 for a thin sausage on a roll and that 6 slices of jalapeno constitutes a £1.50 topping !

Well, regarding food, I wouldn't be at all surprised if people who booked 'a meal' in the Gold Pass area weren't complaining about their food.
There was a variety of food to choose from.(you could approach one only from a choice of six) and we're given a cardboard container approx 20cm long, 15cm wide and 3cm deep) to have food placed in by the vendors.

This 'meal' was an.extra £26 on the ticket price!!!

Got to be honest and say the hotdogs sound like a bargain in comparison.

Miss Velma put down into the corn field as the mass formation finale was opening out into their sections before landing. Pilot radioed "Mustang 3 Bailing out" and then "Mustang 3 Engine Failure". Looked from where we were as if he tried to make a shortened approach from the circuit but made the (correct) decision to land in the corn field (which is a designated area for emergencies), rather than risk crossing the M11 with an IAS which must have been close to stall speed. Looked like a late decision and ultimately great airmanship.

Totally agree with the Horsemen, but also thought the Seafury/Bearcat was really tight and thought the Wildcat was a great routine.

Glad you all had a blast, going to make sure that I am there for the camping next year...

29213

Sorry I'm so late in posting guys!

Just returned from the docs who was, frankly, shocked at my appearance! It wasn't the sun burn...it was the post traumatic stress wot did it! Us oldsters are not used to this manic weekend stuff! Doc says a three week counselling course should get me over meeting Lewis...but Look Sharp (!) ..well, that's gonna tale a bit longer!!!! I might be off ops for some time! I've also been put on a course of sea sick pills to recover from 'turning over at night, whilst sleeping on one of Lew's air beds!'...and I've been told to go and lie down in a darkened room for three days with a bottle of gin....! He says I've got to seriously consider my health before I sign up for next year!!!!!

Right, I've considered it! I'M GOING! It was totally surreal but a huge privilege to meet up with all the guys. It was huge fun on the campsite and I've got to say 'hats off' to Lew for all his forethought and organisation that made the whole weekend so comfortable for the rest of us! The airshow was a blast too, of course, but the 'bestest thing' was just meeting up with everybody.....you all know who you are! I'll never forget the sight of Nork strolling serenely into the campsite, exactly as an Aussie ought to....looking as cool as cool can be! If he had been a dragging a crocodile by the tail we couldn't have been more pleased. It was a blindin' weekend; the aircraft were great, as they always are, but I'd just like to echo what Vamps and Lase said: 'it's the people that really count...and that's what our community is all about.

P.S. I loved the telecaster, Lew' and Frankie's gorgeous acoustic. We must get the guitars out earlier next time. We'll have some fun even if the neighbours don't! Ha ha! Speaking of slide guitar, Lew, have a listen to this by George Thoroughgood...bit of a blast! (And what was the name of the song you played?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su3HiXOjrfA

All the very best to all who made Duxford this year...and to all of you who didn't! Rest assured we all raised a glass (or three) to everybody in the community wherever in the world they were.....and here's to next year! Salute!

tut-tut dear fellow! chips and fries are definitely not the same derivative of potato delicacy! Fries are skinny, inferior versions of our beloved chip, which is substantially more potatoey. oh, and by the way chips are not the wafer thin slices of potatoes in packets, those are CRISPS!

now, go and stand in the corner...

they looked down from where we were but that was quite a little way off, so may not have been fully down. In the pics posted they definitely aren't fully down, so not locked. It could be that the pilot tried to retract them at the last minute, which would avoid the wheels digging into the soil and flipping the aircraft, as Me109 "black 6" did some years back in the same field. Anyway, we can make all the theories we like, but until it's investigated, theories are all they are and only the pilot will know. Either way, there must have been some really quick decisions made...

Good point, that would make sense. If it was a late decision to ditch in the field then that would explain the wheels in that position as they were retracting rather than dropping.
As you say, some very quick decisions made. BTW, why no canopy in the last shot?

jettisoned in order to get out quick I would think. probably got rid of it as the aircraft slowed down?

Out of interest. When did you Brits start calling Chips, "Fries"? You'll be renaming kippers next. Its a slippery slope!

Well the fries were indeed fries - and all 5 of them were really tasty! I didn't dare ask for salt or vinegar though in case they classed them as a "topping"

Sure you expect to pay at shows but that was bloody robbery. In future ill use the Duxford shop and facilities - cheaper by at least a third and no middle man.

we picnicked in the guest enclosure, where one girl was reprimanded by an official for having booze in there. A bit harsh really I thought. Our picnic looked proper good compared to some of the stuff that people had bought, just a pain in the backside having to walk back to the car to get it...

Er....you took your picnic away from the car? didn't you know that the lanes they left between the rows of parked vehicles were exclusively for the use of families to sprawl out on and old people to sit in? They didn't make it clear to us either...we assumed they were they to allow cars to get out...how silly of us!

I'm still picking bits of tuppaware out of my wheels...

That's why they invented the brown paper bag.

It makes booze invisible. I use them all the time on my bench.

Is that the second bench past the pier entrance or the one a bit further along with a Triumph Spitfire parked next to it with the sign "F**k off Red Shirts" on it?

A memorable day for sure. Hope we can all make it back next year, (Might be difficult for Nork to come over two years in a row though)

'Jolly Boys' de-brief

So...Got to the campsite at midday Friday...Met Vamps at the gate...Looksharp had got their early in his new black Porsche (has to have a mention...nice car)...Setup and fellas were arriving in dribs and drabs...and Triumph Spitfires...(has to have a mention...another nice car)...

http://i.imgur.com/XHJYlwI.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/V9aCud5.jpg?1

Marlow and Highseas arrived in Seas Spit..spectacular...Marlow, Vamps, Seas, Sharpy, Monkeynut, BOO, Franky, Valisk and me...So we all sat around in a circle on camp chairs while Sharpy heated up the curry (thanks to Sharpy for taking over there as I was bushed)...Then...a lone figure appeared in the field entrance...dressed in grey carrying a backpack...the conversation stopped and we all watched as the figure drew closer...Someone said 'That's Nork' and it was...Man, we were blewn away...all the way from Oz and from our perspective looked like he had walked it all the way too...Highlight of the weekend, no competition!...After Nork had settled in a chair and we had calmed down from his arrival we relaxed for some chat...He had just slipped into the group like he had been part of us for years...Its really great that world is getting smaller...

Seas spent most of the time laughing with his really huge tankard!

http://i.imgur.com/TZuoehq.jpg

Then as Nork and I were chatting he says 'I got you something'... and he gets a little paper bag out from his bag that he has brought all the way from Oz...When I open it it is apparently clear that it was a bottle opener made of a kangaroos testicles...Hahaha...I was cracked up for 20 minutes...First time I ever got a pressie at a 'Jolly Boys meet' and what an excellent one too...I felt very honoured and also very pleased with my testicles...Thanks Nork...lol...It cracked Mrs Lewis up too when I showed her them at home...although I have to say it did give me a bit of a chill watching her hold my testicles in her hand laughing...So for those of you wondering what they look like...Here's a photo of my testicles...

http://i.imgur.com/zPz8Cia.jpg?1

The endless 'would you like to see my testicles?' gags I will have with that in the future I all owe to Nork...Best gag of the weekend...Thanks buddy...~S~

So we ate curry...drank...talked CLOD...and planes for the afternoon...Looksharp had found it hilarious that Highseas had to emergency book his car into a Cambridge garage as his number plate had been growing since he arrived...

http://i.imgur.com/8OosyWV.jpg

At about 7ish we started getting ready to go to the Eagle...

2 cabs later and we were at the pub...where we met MysticPuma...we drank and were merry...and sometimes were serious!

http://i.imgur.com/RvS9vdV.jpg

Then at midnight we waddled off to the expensive kebab hut for supper...where we all stewed over the expensive prices for 45 minutes...just before we enjoyed our 2 minute kebabs!

http://i.imgur.com/FFnhurv.jpg

Cabs back to the campsite and for once we had an early night for the airshow the next day...

The airshow was great as usual...although one P51 down with out a canopy...Moose found us but we couldn't get in touch with Nork as the mobile (cell phone) number wasn't working...Later Vamps, Marlow and I wandered off on our own for a sortie...Outside of the US hangar a chap walks up to me and says 'Are you Lewis?'...It was Larry and he knew that we sometimes gather at the US hangar...Great that he looked and found us...Another top chap from a different country making the effort to find some like minded folk...We chatted and took some pics...Larry...~S~

http://i.imgur.com/L5jkwrJ.jpg?2

We eventually found Laser and family and smiles all round to see him excited to have us join him...and then Knight found us...We were turning into a big group on the grass...

I went for a lone wolf sortie on my own and bumped into Nork...Haha...We found him!...So I dragged him back to the gang and he was united with Moose who had been especially keen to see him...

So...We had said our goodbyes to Nork and wished him well on his holiday...Cheerio'd to Laser ,Knight and Moosey...and headed back to the campsite for a takeaway curry, beers and chat...and a relax after such an exciting event...

Thanks to all the fellas that attended and camped with us...We got some quality time with many folks in the flesh....and a BIG thanks to Nork for not only making it all the way from OZ but for making the event extra special this year for us with his presence...It will take some beating!

http://i.imgur.com/3Rm1Noe.jpg

And eventually...a big Cuban cigar to anyone who can mention their testicles more in any single post!!

Thanks for the post and extra testicles, I mean pics Lewis.

Great to know that our Aussie Ambassador Sir Nork made such a great testicular impression.
