BOO
Sep-21-2017, 12:04
So......remember I said I wouldnt be doing one of these for a bit.....?

D-rock had other ideas.

Since we got enough Stukas to get a Swastika formation together last Saturday, this time he wants enough Blenheims and Hurricanes for a Union Jack.

This is a RED event. We want to give the old Blenni a good send off before TF4.5.

BUT - if TF 4.5 comes along then we also have some cool stuff up our sleeves for the Beau too!!

SOOOOOOOOOOOO........

We want Blenheim Pilots primarily, but if strafing stuff in a Hurri (or IV-F) floats your boat....I dare say there will be a role for you too!!

What we really REALLY want is an organised Fighter escort.

Red Squads - this is your call to arms!!

We can find roles and positions for individual squads and can split you into your own coms too (within reason)

The last Stuka event saw us ably defended by a number of 109s including pilots from 9./JG52 and JG4. Without escort these same fellows will batter us blue.

C'mon! - Lets see if we can beat the 24 bombers we had last week!!!

Its simple enough... need a button for select engine 1, select engine 2 and select all engines.

one for drop ordnance... and start off with 30% or less fuel !

Its a fun plane the blennie.... by which i mean a slow but loveable lumbering bus of a target.

For those who don't know how to fly the Blenny:

Here is the shortest possible crash course you need to fly it.

START UP.

Take 30% or less fuel. Usually 20-30 is enough for any target on the ATAG server.

Radiator flaps open.

Throttle to about 5%

Fuel Cocks 1 and 2 to "Inner". (I have buttons for these set on my keyboard - hit each twice and you're done this step in about one second.)

Select engine 1. (I have this set to "1" on my keyboard.) Press ignition. Select engine 2 (I have mine set to "2") then start that one.

Select both engines. (I have this one set to tilde)

My engine start takes about 3 seconds. Y-Y-U-U-1-I-2-I-`

Then taxi out. Brakes work like the Spitifre or Hurricane brakes.

Take off at 100% prop, 100% throttle. Gear up as soon as your airborne, if you go too fast with them out they won't lock closed. Reduce prop to 0%. (It's just 2 position)

For low level flight at high speed select 110% throttle, 0% prop, 50% rads. You can do about 260mph on the deck.

For low level bombing you have to drop ahead of your target as the bombs will fly a bit before landing. For skip bombing ships select 11 second delays, for land targets or bombing ships conventionally use 1 second delays. 1 second delays can also "snargle" pesky 109s on your six.

To drop bombs all you need to do is press the release button. No arming, no opening bomb doors, nothing. They drop one per button press (but you can do them all at once if you select salvo mode from the bomb aimer position.)

Land with flaps fully out and back at 100% rads and 100% prop. It basically lands like a Hurricane.

Hope to see you all out on Saturday!

Right I've moved a family meal to the Friday so hopefully should be free on Saturday night now for a bloody beautiful blenheim bash! I actually saw one flying last weekend at Duxford (its a Mk4 but with the nose of a Mk1). It was leading a formation of 3 spitfires and 5 hurricanes, pretty awesome sight!

I should hopefully be bringing two friends along as well, got a 'training' mission with one of them tomorrow to get him up in the air in a blenheim.

Unfortunatly i will have to miss this event Boo, my Obergruppenfhurer (Mrs Meyer) has passed me a movement order telling me we are to attend a retirement party that evening. As much as i would like to tell her to go and boil her head as i will be flying with my kameraden in defence of our hard earned spoils in France. I know that in reality i will end up in the Krankenhaus with doctors trying to remove a saucepan which has been embedded in my head.
So i must for the sake of my health pass this one up plus its a free bar WOOT!
The rest of the Karaya staffel will be in attendance to lend support to this event of course .

Ha ha! I did laugh here! Great fun, Meyer!

How come we all seem to have an 'Obergruppenfhurer, just like Mrs. Meyer? I've certainly got one too (though I would never be with out her....he hastily adds, hearing a footfall behind the chair).....and I don't even fly Blue!!!!!

JG52 are quite rightly revered and respected by all in our Community for their incomparable flying skills and great teamwork. I always thought their iron discipline was the result of natural, steely determination and teutonic grit. However, now I find their success is down to 'a healthy respect for women and....... saucepans!'

Ha ha! Never underestimate JG52....or the power of a women!!!!!! Salute, JG52!

P.s. You are in good company, Meyer, as unfortunately my own 'Mrs Meyer' has informed me that we are on Grandparenting duties over the weekend so, once again, I will miss Boo's extravaganza! I have read all the reports of Boo's Bashes and they are all glowing so, I am sorry to miss out on the fun, yet again! Good luck on Saturday, Boo! I'm sure it will be another rip roaring success! SOME STUFF TO HELP US ON SATURDAY

So we can quickly get some idea of who is flying what on the RED side (blues you know the rules - sort yourselves out!! :-)), it would be useful if those intending to fly bombers gather in the bomber channel of the BOOmer group (top of the squads section in ATAG TS) and the fighters gather in the first of the fighter channels.

If you are intending to fly escort and are either intending to be the CO or leader of a group of more than three aircraft, it would also be helpful if you would just drop me (BOO) a PM so I can better identify you on the night. We are hoping to be able to split the escort into sections with specific responsibilities and it will allow us identify what groups we can create.

What we are hoping to do on Saturday is to have a huddle with any flight leaders beforehand (Say 1945UTC) then @ 2000UTC have a full brief for everyone. This is server dependent.

It all sounds very formal but it isn't really - We just want to start us all off pointing roughly in the right direction.

See you all Saturday!! (2000UTC or 9PM London time)

Cheers

The location and movement of the bomber formation will be announced on the game's chat bar often to minimize the use of whisper. Whisper will only be used by a few escort squad leaders.

If you are flying a bomber, all instructions and engine settings will be shared on ATAG's BOOmers channel. Know your aircraft.

If you are flying fighter escort, watch for the bomber's location on the chat bar, or follow squad leader. Scramble immediately, cover our airfield and watch those radars for incoming enemies.

Everyone is welcome to join, no matter how new you are to the game.

Win or lose, it will be a blast for both sides.

WOW!!

Thanks to EVERYONE who took part. We fairly got the server creakin there!!

Big thanks to DRock and RebelSquirl for the leadership and moral boosting chats and to our Escorts especially TWC,the 69th and FG28 but also to all the unaffiliated players who also jumped on to help us.

We flew 4 missions and ended the night with more Blenheims in the air at the turning of the server that our first event attracted at its start all those months ago. Its a testament to your determination that we kept going despite some of the hammering we took and also a testament to our leadership to keep us going!! In the end our group flew 70 individual sorties in total and that not counting the fighter escort!!.

Tip from the DBS squad in BOS has a phrase "participation makes it happen" and without everyone being prepared to step up and step in this sort of stuff just couldn't be run.

Lots to learn from this one not least how to fit 24 Blenheims onto one field!! We are learning as much as anyone and, really don't know what will happen until it happens. Despite some early difficulties I hope everyone had a blast.

And finally to our hunters S!!!! - we hope we gave you something to go for and that you enjoyed it as much as we did. Its a funny feeling getting shot up and still thinking "Yes!!". You hit us hard twice and hard again as we crawled to our first main target. Great Engagements!!

Warmest Regards

Kenley was a nightmare to spawn in at in such numbers so we switched to Wilmo........which was an EVEN BIGGER nightmare to spawn into. Most ended up on the wrong side of the railway line and took off over a farmers field.

Although the first raid as quickly cut down it did give us a window of opportunity where we knew we had a chance to get clear of a field. Sadly I think someone called out a position or as good as on open chat but I also think we had also been spotted prior.

Each event throws up new situations and problems to think about but we learn from each one.

Oh - and we won at the cost of only....ooooo.....60 Blenheims??? :-)

I Never Thank ATAG for the Server which is very poor of me. Running a server that can take this strain without a glitch is something else.

Possibly more, with all the spawn-in crazyness I went through 18 in total, to get only three up in the air...!

Thanks Boo, and everyone working behind the scenes for organizing such a fantastic event.

The info. given by TWC over coms. about engine settings, altitude, headings, etc. made the evening so much more immersive and enjoyable. I was rather intimidated by their knowledge but they got me involved and made me feel very welcome. I would have been lost and flying alone without their help. Thanks, chaps!

Our pleasure. Escorting the final 12 blenheims on the last target was a blast. Red flight and Blue flight escorts high to the north as a screen with a small contingient of fighters in amongst the attacking bomber stream was a hoot. I watched the Blens hit that field full of aircraft and it was an awesome run. Extracting out, I saw the Blen formation break up and take out that final road transport target. Ground guns firing, Blens diving into the streams of climbing tracer, clouds of grey smoke bursting up from the road, all adding to the pall above the trees. At the same time, allied fighters were engaged a short distance away to the north, comms alive with exciteable voices keeping the enemy away from the bombers wrapping up the map. Very immersive and a great job by both sides.

Well done to the planners and hosts.

Thanks to those who did make it happen!
Was great fun.

Not being used to bombers and big formations during the first (real) attack I found it a nerve-wrecking experience just to stay close without hitting another blennie. It was almost a relief when the blues came and started to shoot us down.
The second attack run down on sealevel at full speed was just a hoot!
Again I did not make it to the target but it was well worth it.

Thanks to Boo, D Rock and everyone else involved, I had a blast and to do it in my weapon of choice was a bonus. For me it was mission accomplished as I didn't collide with anyone or cause any pile ups and with only one verbal warning, I may just do this again.

Cheers

That was a great evening of flying with a great bunch of people.

I can only echo the thanks expressed by all the others. These events are getting better and will, I hope, become a regular feature.

The level of fun and immersion taking part is off the charts for me. I can only marvel at the superb community that we have here in CloD. Long may it last.

Cheers everyone until the next one.

Was a great night our lads enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks to all that took part because these kind of events live or die on you lot turning up in numbers. The events are getting more popular each time they run which can only be good news for the game and community.
Well done Boo on organizing it well done all who answered the call.

Cracking evening. My first organised event and I loved it. From the comedy of spawning in on a hill (rolled backwards and wings fell off), the mullering we got at the start to the final victory in flipping the map it was a great event.

Well done to all the organisers, those piping up with useful comments on the night and to ATAG for hosting the server and TS - both coped well under the strain.

Thanks all.

Anyone know how to recover a track that won't play? My first (and largest) track seems corrupt and I wanted to do a Blooper reel with all the spawning shenanigans at Kenley and Willmington but looks like that's a non starter :(

Great fun, indeed.

Thanks to Boo for organizing this event, and to ATAG for hosting us. Also, thank you to everyone who supports these events. Despite all the curveballs thrown our way, the Red bombers continued to support their leader.

Our bomber sorties need to be fluid and adapt to an always changing battle. This may require us to find new airfields to spawn from, or a change of target at the last minute. The enemy's movements and weakness should always be considered.

It would seem that these events have become very popular. This is great, but we had so many bombers, that we ran out spawn points. This problem will be solved next time.

Despite the heavy losses, we still learned a lot, and changes will be made to make things run smoother. Besides, it would be boring if we always managed to sneak through without a big fight. It makes our success well deserved when we fight for it.

This mission showed some real skill from our Blenheim pilots. The assembly, take off, flights, and bombings, were by far the most impressive flying I've seen yet. For a bunch of people that never fly together like this, everyone did very well.

To our escorts, thank you. You guys are the reason we won the map. Bravo.

And to the Axis, thank you for the fight. If this were a battle of attrition, you would have beat us. Or at least bankrupted the RAF.lol

The next mission will be a big one. Please join us again.

Cheers

A video of the 2nd and 3rd raid from the defender view will be up either tomorrow or on Thursday. We never even saw a glimpse of the first raid which was intercepted somewhere far off over the channel. The others offered plenty of action though. On the 3rd raid particularly I was messed up by a bomb dropped by a Blenheim from low alt.

Canopy was gone, windshield lay in ruins, ReVi was dead, my right flaps went on vacation, left wheel was a goner, rudder called in on sickness leave...

BUT I was uninjured and even managed to land that mess of a plane :)

Too funny.

We decided to go low and I reminded everyone about the 'Snargle bomb' option. It paid off with at least 4-5 successes.

Looks like we found Karaya's Kryptonite.:-P:recon:

Thank you for your mercy , kind Sir.lol

It's obvious after several BOOmer's missions, that we are up against a few very well organized Axis Squadrons. Work must be done to increase Allies fighter numbers and coordination to bring some balance to these missions.

If you are in a squad, please encourage your teammates to take part in these events. It's good practice and great fun.

Somewhat ironically, 109s and 110s with their cannons are better equipped to intercept bombers, than Spits and Hurris with their peashooters.
When Galland wished for a squadron of Spitfires, I can imagine there were some guys in the other team, who wished for German fighters as well.

Additionally He 111, Ju 87 and BR 20 seem more robust than those poor Blennies.

I've uploaded my point of view of the event but unfortunately the video has been stuck at 360p for the past 24h. I really hope that it'll go up to full res sometime soon because I've already deleted the original footage due to HDD space issues.

Hello MezzA

Thanks for all your support to date. I cant speak for Drock but Ill be looking at some point after 4.5 is released. The temptation will be use the new Beaufighter and Blenni and Hurri FB but the way in which the maps are currently set may not provide enough opportunity for this at first.

One aircraft we have not yet flown in a large formation is the BR20. This presents quite a few challenges to the unfamiliar but its not so complicated and can carry some huge bombs (albeit not very high) :)

I think perhaps a mixed raid of BR20s with G50 and 109 escorts would be entertaining.

From the Red side the new Beau will be a menace and so our escort will need to be very well organised no matter what Blue flys.

Watch this space!

Cheers

If you wanted to we have the old Italy Attacks event mission from a while ago. We could run that on server 2, but I know you also like doing these events on the main server. But not all the main server missions have the Italian planes, so you might have everyone show up for the event but have Kanalkampf (which already was used in Boomer Blitz and has no Italian bombers.) or Fall Rot (one of the best maps but no BR 20s.) running on the server.
