I have installed a very recent STEAM version, and yesterday, Jan 5 2018, Cliffs/Dover and also the Blitz version. Do I need to install any patches, Does the Blitz version supercede patches?

Thanks, Tom

Welcome to the forums, Sewerwisp. No doubt Lewis will be along with his welcome post ;)

All you need is Cliffs of Dover: Blitz edition on Steam. That is the very latest version (4.5) and has everything you need to get going, no other patches necessary.

Edit: Looking at your system specs, the graphics card might be a cause for concern with successfully running Cliffs.

Hi sewerwisp...

Before I make my world famous welcome post to you (below)...hehe...I'd just like to ask that if you like CLOD and BLITZ then its a good idea to leave a positive review (in any language) in the STEAM forum...That way we will get to see more of what the TFS have to offer in the future...It helps keep THE DREAM ALIVE!...haha...

Checkout the 'Beginners Guide'...for info and tips...It will save you a heap of time in getting up to scratch.....and its a really fun learning curve too...

Also try youtube for startup procedures on all the aircraft...

I recommend getting in the online server as soon as you can take off if that's ultimately where you'd like to fly...I flew single player for 30 minutes before I took the plunge...The ATAG online server is a great environment to learn and there's not really any damage you can do in there as a new player.....It is also mission based just with real players trying to foil your objectives...If you are concerned then pick an airstrip furthest from the front line (there always is one or two on every map) and get some alt before you go hunting...You'll get tagged a lot but there are tricks you learn out of pure desperation in those first few weeks that you'll be able to use later...I know cos I still use the same tricks I learned then too because they work...and never underestimate the stall to get you out of a tight fix...That sometimes works too...

TeamSpeak is optional but you'll learn a whole lot faster with it even if you say very little once you are on the server...You are quite welcome to just listen if you feel more comfortable with that....so you don't actually need a mic either...Try it and see!

Thanks so much for the welcome, the other websites/ forums leave a little to be desired in the friendliness area, usually simply by ignoring you, You guys gave me more info in 2 posts than the others have in 2 months, so thank u!
I have both programs running well, and am tweaking things. Regular cliffs has a mediocre but manageable FPS, but Blitz is down right lousy. I am going to try upgrading my video card to the Nvidia Quadro 2000m which is the only one I can put in as far as I know, although the literature that came with the computer says the ff:
M4600
• AMD FirePro M5950 Mobility Pro Graphics with 1
GB GDDR5
• NVIDIA Quadro 1000M with 2 GB GDDR3
• NVIDIA Quadro 2000M with 2 GB GDDR3.

Those apparently are my only choices. Can I use a GDDR5 in a computer that already has a GDDR3 card? In the meantime I am going to try tweaking settings, and am going to try turning over to the card itself, the main settings, like suggested in other forums, through the Nvgidia control panel. I don't know how good the Firepro is, at the time I bought this, these 3 were middle of the road, to bottom. But with the 1000m I can get good FPS on the newest Wolfensteins.
I would prefer a laptop because of space. Does anyone know reasonably priced good gaming laptop vid cards? I plead SOME ignorance.

I cant help with the teckie stuff....

but if yuo are running a lower end machine make sure yuo have fasr static shadows and extended clouds OFF in game, and lower the "buildings amount"

those are the three biggest drains as far as i can tell.

OK, thx, I did that and getting better, I ordered a Quadro 2000m for $50.00, how to get the FPS to appear on the screen while playing?

Unfortunately the Quadro 2000m is still going to be towards the bottom end of cards than can run the game, but if you're prepared to turn some settings down you might be OK.
Off the top of my head, to display FPS you open the console once you've loaded into the game and are sat in an aircraft and type: fps START RUN

Good luck!

EDIT: I misremembered the command. Please look at uranor's post below for the correct commands.

You need to do the following:
1. Map a key combination to toggle the Console; look in Options / Controls / Game; I use CTRL + ` (backtick) but you can choose anything you like; make sure it does not conflict with other assignments.
2. While flying, open the Console and type: fps SHOW START
3. Close console

To remove the FPS:
1. Open console
2. Type: fps HIDE STOP
3. Close console

Note: Console commands are case sensitive. Type them exactly as shown.

Then close the console and the FPS message should appear top-center in your screen. What constitute good game playability is subjective; keep in mind that the human eye-brain combination cannot perceive an arbitrary number of FPS; where is the threshold? My rule of thumb is that 60 FPS is very good, 30 FPS is fine (it is the frame rate at which 90% of videos are played). Less than 30 you are missing out. More than 60 is gravy, beyond 100 it may be wasted money (subjective, of course).

Hi sewerwisp...

You'll see a lot of effort here with our new recruits...We realise we are a small community (comparatively) and we know how daunting this sim can be...so we tend to pull together and help...Not just one squad...But across the board...There's a lot of real class squads (and lone wolfs) here that have been in WW2 flight sims for decades (69th, TWC and JG4 are but 3 fine examples...there's many more)...Me included...and obviously my own band of merry brothers (ATAG)...

The other thing is that if you don't get involved in the community, the forums and TeamSpeak then the sim becomes even harder to master...There are tricks with setup, flying etc. that you just will never know if you don't get stuck into the community...and that's bad for the progression of this wonderful sim...It also helps the new guys pick it up faster...

So you did the right thing...you made an intro post and away we go...:)

Hi sewerwisp, and welcome to Cliffs of Dover and the ATAG community buddy.

I am no expert on all the tech stuff, and I haven't much idea about system specs, but what I will say is that from personal experience a laptop is not ideal to play CLoD, unless you have a top end gaming laptop, and even then you are better off connecting to a larger monitor or TV as contact spotting is much more difficult on a smaller laptop screen.

However, the laptop I was using up until I invested in a recon gaming rig ran cliffs ok on lower settings, but bear in mind that the improvements made in Blitz will put a greater demand on your system.
I have installed Blitz on my laptop, as well as my desktop rig, and I am finding that I am getting a lot more stutters now when I play on the Laptop, even at lower settings.

Check out the beginners guide for the minimum recommended system specs, and also check out the links in Lewis's post above for a whole host of information on all things CLoD

Good to have you with us, and please join us on the server, and on Teamspeak anytime :salute:
