Were there any spits or hurris with 20mm cannons during the battle of britain? If so, are there anywhere I can find these planes?

Ooops pressed wrong button on my phone. Think Cannon firing Spits or Hurris wernt around during BOB i am under the impression they arrived a year or 18 months later. For that reason there are none in this sim. They will be arriving in the next big update set in Africa Tunisia.

Hi Oswald.nor...

Before I make my world famous welcome post to you (below)...I'd just like to ask that if you like CLOD and BLITZ then its a good idea to leave a positive review (in any language) in the STEAM forum...That way we will get to see more of what the TFS have to offer in the future...It helps keep THE DREAM ALIVE!...

Checkout the 'Beginners Guide'...for info and tips...It will save you a heap of time in getting up to scratch.....and its a really fun learning curve too...

Also try youtube for startup procedures on all the aircraft...

I recommend getting in the online server as soon as you can take off if that's ultimately where you'd like to fly...I flew single player for 30 minutes before I took the plunge...The ATAG online server is a great environment to learn and there's not really any damage you can do in there as a new player.....It is also mission based just with real players trying to foil your objectives...If you are concerned then pick an airstrip furthest from the front line (there always is one or two on every map) and get some alt before you go hunting...You'll get tagged a lot but there are tricks you learn out of pure desperation in those first few weeks that you'll be able to use later...I know cos I still use the same tricks I learned then too because they work...and never underestimate the stall to get you out of a tight fix...That sometimes works too...

TeamSpeak is optional but you'll learn a whole lot faster with it even if you say very little once you are on the server...You are quite welcome to just listen if you feel more comfortable with that....so you don't actually need a mic either...Try it and see!

I believe only a single squadron was equipped with the Spitfire Mk.Ib which traded the eight-guns of the Ia for a pair of Hispanos. However the cannons proved to be incredibly unreliable at the time, in part because of their tendency to freeze up at higher altitudes. Reliability was in fact so poor that the cannons would jam after just a handful of rounds fired and the squadron equipped with them demanded being retro-fitted with eight-gun Spitfires from a nearby flight school. I guess it was because of this poor performance that later models all received four Browning MGs on top of the cannons as a sort of backup.

It was 19 squadron at Duxford that had cannons during BOB. They had terrible jamming issues, as Karaya says. I believe it was because they had to be mounted on their side to fit in the wing and jammed with any sharp manoeuvre. The pilots asked to have the Brownings back, AFAIK Bader never trusted cannon afterwards and flew with the Brownings into 41 when most others had converted.

Irrelevant as weapon due be unreliable, cannons where used by few RAF fighters during 'B of B'.

RAF no. 19 Squadron are equipped with Spitfire armed with 2 cannons until 4, September, when due cannons frequent stoppage they took old Spitfires with conventional .303 from a training unit as desperate measure.

Issued to No 19 Squadron RAF at RAF Fowlmere on 1 July 1940, Spitfire Mk I QV-H was their last cannon-armed fighter to achieve a confirmed victory on 3 September when F/Sgt George C "Grumpy" Unwin of Green Section swept down from 20,000ft on Me 110C-2 3U+KR of 7/ZG26 at 10.40 against a burning RAF North Weald 5m southwest of Colchester, claiming it despite a jammed starboard cannon. Later the day, the 27-year-old pilot took over an ex-OTU aircraft, the ORB holding "at least their guns fire".

Two Hurricanes are experimentally armed with cannons in gondolas. Avoided by most pilots because fly like a cow.

Pilot of both of this Spit and Hurri made few claims.

31, August -" 19 Squadron, operating from the Duxford satellite of Fowl mere, tried to intercept with their unreliable cannon-armed Spitfires but lost three of them and one pilot for only two claims. "

151 squadron has two Hurricane armed with cannons, one with two, one with four - under wing gondolas, was used by 151 squadron and saw a briefly action, "F/L Roddick Smith of 151 Squadron on 14 July and he claimed a Dornier with it on 13 August."

F/L R.L.'Dick' Smith joined No 151 Squadron on the 10th of June 1940 as "B" Flight commander. His flying ability was rated "Exceptional". Realising he had no combat experience where as the men under his command did from their time in France, he put in as many hours as he could practising dog-fighting with them prior to his first sortie. He flew 133 sorties during the Battle of Britain. Some of these sortie's were at the controls of a two cannon armed Hurricane (L1750) or a four cannoned Hurricane(V7350) which until then were idle as no one wanted to fly them. The cannon slowed the Hurricane down and also made it less agile. On top of that it was aid that the cannons lacked reliability. He flew them on 110 operational sorties from North Weald. On the 13th of August 1940 he scored his first confirmed victory, a Do 17. He ended the Battle with this one kill, three probables, and two damaged and no recognition for having proved the cannon armed Hurricane's to be effective.

Cannon armed Hurricanes are noted and mentioned in Luftwaffe reunion at Karinhall in 16, September: 'Es gibt daher nur ein Motto - Alles muss sich auf die Kanonen-Hurricane sturzen".

This Hurricanes probable was use be 46 Sqn too.

"V7360 was flown by Flt Lt A Rabagliati for about 2 weeks with 46 Sqn."

"Flt Lt. Dick Smith shot down a 109 on July 14th 1940 whilst flying in a cannon armed hurricane (L1750 - Z), he also damaged a Do17 the next day in the same aircraft.(as did Rabagliati of 46 Squadron earlier in the war).

After 'B of B'.

Finally in November 1940 No.92 Squadron was given Spitfires equipped with two 20mm cannon and four 0.303in machine guns. This proved to be a much more effective combination of weapons, and became the standard for the “b” wing.

If modeled in a flight game that RAF 1940 cannon armed fighters need by done in a way that weapons fail at every mission. In that way players just ignore then, so don't worth the work. :D

1lokos explanation is correct.

For those reasons we will not be adding or including cannon armed Spitfires or Hurricanes in 4.5.

The earliest effective cannon armed Spitfires were the IIB's, the earliest effective Hurricanes were the IIC's.

Both will be in TF 5.0. (along with other cannon types)
