Memoir from an old friend (and former high school English & History teacher) from the eyes of a then-10 year old youngster.
From Paul Jones’ memoirs:
“London was protected during the War by a string of Barrage Balloons which formed a kind of fence to force the German aircraft to fly high. They were often controlled by women who sat in a cage to protect them in case the cable which connected the Barrage Balloon to the truck broke. It would be unpleasant to have hundreds of feet of metal rope land on you. One day I saw a burning balloon floating away from London. I was told a German aircraft had set it on fire.”
