Anyone else signed up for Star Citizen? (space sim, open world - by the creator of Wing Commander series)

http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/

It'd be great if those of us from CloD, who were thinking of playing this game when it comes out, could team up and create some havoc! A couple of the guys form 92 sqn have already got memberships.... eagerly awaitign this release.

Looks pretty good Phil! Hope they use a true physics model to fly. Most space games /sims act like they are flying in an atmosphere. Graphics are super.

I get the impression that physics will be important. They're talking about how many engines required to ensure thrust in all degrees of movement, plus how momentum (no gravity/ low gravity + no atmosphere) is managed for ships already.

Should be good from that perspective.

Can't say that space/fantasy interests me but this does look good. I could only wish this guy had a passion for WW2 aircraft and the re-creation of real history.

I'm with you Torian! Space isn't really my thing, but this game does look good. I'd love it if Chris Roberts put his skills towards a WW2 flight sim....

I've appreciated science fiction forever, my bookshelves are full of it, but pc or console sci-fi games have never quite hit the spot for me. I saw the first clips of Mr Roberts launching his kickstarter thingy and was impressed then.
I'm still impressed now, but getting involved depends on what the eventual business model is, and looking at the level of fidelity in the graphics, what kind of new computer I'd need............

But flying a space fighter in an environment which looks like all the Hubble pics put together would be fantastic, so I'll have a serious look on release.

+1 to all the above.

The name Chris Roberts rang a bell when I clicked on the link, sort of a "I wonder what happened to Chris?" -type thought. Glad to see he's back at it. Not only is he good with the technicals, but he's a helluva story maker as well.

I pledged the lowest amount possible to get alpha & beta access - think it was around $40. There's an immense amount of hype about Star Citizen and Chris Roberts has a habit of over-promising and not quite delivering (though not to Molyneux-esque proportions at least!). There's a lot of people literally expecting the greatest game of all time and I think there's a fair chance they might end up being a bit disappointed. If that's the way it goes I'm just out $40 - no big deal. I'd feel sorry for those who have shelled out some major bucks though to secure the high-end ships so hopefully it all goes well and a good game arrives in Nov 2014.

I think Star Citizen is going to be amazing. I loved the combat of space sims of old. It's been so long since there's been any sort of Wing Commander / Privateer type space sim. I hope it delivers. I bought a ship a while back :D

Star Citizen does look pretty cool, but to be honest, I am kind of more looking forward to Rogue System (assuming all goes well, and I think it should). I just absolutely love the idea of hopping into an interceptor, getting all the systems running and manageable, and actually running through the procedure of getting out of the station, executing a mission, and getting back in again.

Star Citizen does look like an incredible amount of fun to play with friends though - lets see how long we go without absolutely ruining our spaceship :D

There are four 92 Sqn. guys with ships already. We're going to fly together as the 92 squadron East India Trading Company!

1 x Freelancer
1 x Origin 325i

Strings
1 x Freelancer

1 x Aurora (I think)

In total:
Constellations: 2
Freelancers: 2
Hornet: 1
Origin 325i: 3
Aurora: 1

9 ships... not bad..... ;)

Phil, you seem to be well up for this. I'm pretty interested myself, but haven't been involved in anything like this sort of 'crowd funding' before. Frankly, the whole cost thing looks pretty scary. Ok, you can pay $30 for the ultra-basic entry level, but the top price to pay is Five Thousand Dollars. $5000. Before anything much happens. Five Thousand Dollars????

Hey guys!

I'm thinking of buying this game. What ships would you recommend for a guy that has approx. 75 bucks to put on a game and that loves combat aircrafts? I can't make up my mind on what to choose... some options are just SO expensive!

ANON6_Wolfie
Sep-04-2013, 22:42
I would go for the "Digital Colonel" with the Hornet, 125$

If that is to expensive go for "Arbiter" with the 325a Fighter, 80$

Whatever you do make sure you buy a package that contains ALPHA and BETA access.

Let me know what you went for and I might help you out upgrading it to a LTI (LifeTime Insurance) package:thumbsup:

I think they need around $30m to fund the game development (pay wages, buy kit, rent offices, marketing etc...). The initial plan was 50% crowd funded and 50% funded by a development company.
Now they're trying for 100% crowd funded.

I would go with the "Arbiter" pack, and then try to get an upgrade for life-time insurance for your ship from one of us.

Make sure you get an "Arbiter" pack that also includes both "alpha" and "beta" game access.

The "arbiter" pack will give you a single ship, the Origin 325i Fighter. I have one of these as my combat aircraft.

Between all of us that play CloD, we have enough larger ships. The game will allow us to let friend crew our other ships.

How will crewing other peoples ships work Phil. For instance, would I be able to use one of your ships to fly my cargo from one planet to another, sell it, and return the ship to you but me keeping the money? What if I crewed one of your ships and captured an enemy ship. Would that prize belong to me or to you?

That depends on what was agreed between players before hand. I guess I could always refuse to pay you... but that would make me a dick.

What if I crewed one of your ships and captured an enemy ship. Would that prize belong to me or to you?

Then you would own the captured ship.

This would be the idea, to let friends use my spare ships to get them started, so they can go capture their own, eventually.
Although, captured ships do not have insurance. So if you then lost that captured ship, you'd have to start again. (or buy a new one with what in-game money you had managed to earn/steal)

Ah right, so it's up to the people. I wasn't sure if it was coded into the engine that the "owner" was the one who got the booty. Sounds great actually.

How would that work? I could buy the Hornet package (by buying the Digital Colonel package) for 125 bucks... then what? You could upgrade my package to LTI? What would I need to do?

Oh and btw: Do you think paying 125 bucks for a hornet (which is not the military variant if I heard correctly) is too much/senseless? What do you guys think about the Hornet?

ANON6_Wolfie
Sep-07-2013, 10:16
I doubt the hornet will fall in price, it will problably be higher.

The militay version F7A Hornet is equipt with upgrades, weapons and systems for military purpose by default.
The civilian version F7C Hornet is the foundation to build on and meet whatever requirements you have in mind.

Here is a link with the ship specs https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs

This is how we upgrade a package to LTI:
You gift your package to someone that is a original or veteran backer, let say to me..
I take your package and melt it down so I get the 125$ credit. (after 24h)
Then I`ll buy the same package with LTI and gift it back to you

note. There is a 24h wait from I get the package till I am allowed to melt it down to credits.

Okay, I'm going to buy the Digital Colonel pledge: Hornet looks more like my kind of ship (reliable, fast and powerful). Then, I guess I'll gift it to you (if you want to do this, of course...) so you can gift me back a LTI'd Digital Colonel pledge. What's your RSI ID?

Edit: NVM about the reference. Injerin convinced me ;)

i currently has aurora, 300i and a free lancer.
I have been following this games development since the kickstarter was launched.
the web site has all the relevent answers to any questions but i thought i would answer one question that i read in this thread
What happens to the money?

origionally Chris Roberts (CR) launched the kick starter to see if support was available in the community for the game and he had funding arranged if he was able to prove there was a customer base.
what then transpired was a huge support from us gaming types to the tune of 6 million dollars in one month.
He is hoping to completely fund the game from the community which requires 22 million dollars and it appears that this is going to happen.

But what does this mean????

it means that all the costing for developing the game is provided by the people that are going to play the game. hence.. the offices, hardware, weekly paychecks for artists, programers staff etc. server. there is no publisher that is directing the goals or outcome of the game so instead of the tradtitional developer - plublisher - reatail store - gamer sequence it is now developer - gamer.
this means that feedback from the community to developer is noted and this has been evidenced by myself and others over the last nearly a year of updates on the website about the game.
there are around 3 - 4 updates released each week and you are able to determine for yourself where the monies are going. it is exciting as it gives us the gamer an inside look at the development of a game.
for example.... at 10 million dollars the steatch goal was to purchase a motion capture studio so that ingame animations would be cheaper to make.... a month later they released footage of the installation of the mocap studio and since then we have seen the product of mocap in the game engine.....
for the small outlay required to access the alpha dogfight modual it is worth the investment if you are interested in this genre of game (which i have been for all of my adult life...sad really)
if you are super rich in real life then the option to support more is availabe....
the game is a buy to play... not subscribe to play or micro transactions to play
thus endeth the rant of Strings and i will see you in the verse:)

Looks like the CATERPILLAR will be available tonight.

Drake maintains that the Caterpillar, a sprawling, modular spacecraft witch appears at least somewhat like its namesake, is for legitimate commerce and extended search and rescue missions... but at the end of the day, the Caterpillar is truly the evil twin of the Freelancer.
Crew: 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwcXdd7M6DI

Edit:The Caterpillar is up for grabs now.. $225

Designed for supporting pirate operations, the Caterpillar features a large cargo hold for carrying loot, heavier armor than other freighters in its class and room for five crew able to serve in boarding operations. Despite its heavier armor, the Caterpillar isn’t a bulldog… a succesful operation will require a fighter escort.
