I'm really surprised they (ED) are done with EDGE; and how come DCS World isn't using it yet?
According to the guys over at RRG Studios its been done 4 versions ago they are just making maps. (Normandy) how many other maps are being worked on and how come they (ED) is still selling old tech? :goofy to me it sound like they are trying to squeeze us out of more money.

EDGE has the base map engine under professional client, 3rd Parties and DCS:W working on the future. The 4th version EDGE fill all them. Nevada use 4th EDGE version. When has complete (and other future theaters), come into DCS:World. Actual caucassus map use old technology engine, and need rebuild from the scratch to use EDGE.

There seems to be objects everywhere in those maps. Definitely looking forward to seeing this type of stuff. I hate seeing lifeless landscapes in flight sims.

What I don't like on all the screenshots/videos are the fluffy cotton candy clouds. Current DCS doesn't have proper clouds either. CloD has the same problem although it might be less obvious after the next TF patch as seen on some WIP screens.
It's a rare occasion when a sim does clouds right. I think the best I've seen were in FSX (although it might have been some mod) RoF and (sic!) War Thunder.

I'm just wondering what the problem here is and why sims like DCS or CloD can't have proper clouds that don't look like cute balls of cotton...

Gavagai, I meant sims in general have this problem, not only EDGE. It exists in current DCS, Clod etc. all of which have rather crappy looking clouds.

These white balls of cotton can be passable in a helo sim like the one on the movies but for a product like DCS where you fly high they NEED to work on the clouds, because it's not only immersion/fluff factor, it directly affects gameplay. Clouds obstructing the view, planes losing others in the clouds etc. were all important aspects of WWII fights. Seems pretty important to me in any sim trying to be realistic about it.

It's not the most important aspect in a sim but it's a pretty important still, these cotton balls simply will not do...They look like something out of a child's drawing btw...

A old info of EDGE and luckybob9.

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1309493&postcount=1

Get you fix of Nevada screenshots:
http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1309446#post1309446

NOTE: None of this is 100% official. This is me helping you putting information into one spot.

What is EDGE?
EDGE, dubbed internally, Eagle Dynamic Graphic Engine, is a new Image Generator (IG) built from the ground up that allowed for numerous benefits to the DCS environment.

What is the Image Generator (IG) people keep mentioning?
An Image Generator (IG) is another way of describing what EDGE is. Image Generator (IG) is a generic term for something that generates the images on your screen. EDGE a self coined term by c0ff to describe the Image Generator (IG) and is simply an acronym.

When will EDGE be released?
Since EDGE is built from scratch, it will take time to incorporate all the elements that are needed to make it playable at acceptable frame rates.

What are the benefits to EDGE?
· EDGE allows for Direct X 11 support
· Dynamic shadowing of the terrain and mountains
· Clipmap support
· Higher object count
· Higher resolution ground terrain mesh
· More detailed tree models
· Better graphical effects
· High resolution road textures
· Ability for road signs and light signals
· Additional ground clutter (rocks, cactuses, etc.)

Will the Black Sea map in its current form work with EDGE?
No. Since the technology behind EDGE is dramatically different, down to the tools that create it, terrain needs to be built with the EDGE benefits in mind. This is a HUGE undertaking and not an easy task to redo something.

Are there maps in progress that take advantage of EDGE?
Yes, the first map to take advantage of EDGE is Nevada.

How far along is the Nevada map?
It has been stated that the Nevada map is mostly done but work remains to finish the underlying EDGE engine.

If the Nevada map is mostly done, why not post some screenshots to the community?
EDGE is the underlying core of the Nevada map. If EDGE is in a state where it is not capable of running or showing off its potential, (bad frames, no anti-alisting/ ‘jaggies’, etc), screenshots might not be possible.

How big is the Nevada map?
There is no official distance/ surface number, but it has been said that it will include Las Vegas, Groom Lake, Nellis, Lake Mead, and Hoover Dam.

Will EDGE/ Nevada cost anything?
EDGE is rendering engine, so no. It has been stated that the plan is still for the Nevada map to be free for users who pre-ordered DCS: A-10C Warthog beta.

So what will Nevada cost if I did not pre-order?
See Below

How will I switch between maps?
When creating a new mission, the authors can specify what map to use. This feature is already implemented but there is only the current map.

Typical questions that do not have answers:
Will trees be collidable?
What is the size of the Nevada map?
Are the creation tools going to be made available to the public?
What is the cost of Nevada if I did not pre-order DCS: A10C?
When will new screenshots be posted?
When will it be released?

June 2013

Work On New Rendering Technology Continues

The new Image Generator (IG) technology is currently in development and will be introduced to DCS World when it is ready. Elements of the new IG include:
- More detailed terrain.
- Better graphical effects
- Dedicated server
- DirectX 11 support
- Skeleton animation for infantry

---

A few items to reiterate:

1- Much of the Nevada map is done, but aspects of it could certainly change between now and release.

2- The original effort was done by a third party, but for various reasons, that effort did not work out and the Eagle team basically had to re-start it from scratch.

3- Due to the massive number of ground objects, elevation mesh detail, and texture sizes, a new image generator (IG) had to to be created in order to run it at more than single digit frame rates. Creating a new IG is a huge undertaking and it takes a lot of time. More so than anything else, this has been the reason behind the delay.

4- There has been no change in our plan to make this map available for free to those that purchased the A-10C beta.

5- Given the nature of the map, I would imagine that most missions will revolve around training, but certainly large Red Flag type campaigns are also possible.

6- We have no ETA at this time.

When there is a change to any of the above, there will be official news of it.

EDGE Update

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1900652&postcount=3

Now that we are getting very close to integrating EDGE into DCS, I can share a few more details.

1- DirectX 11 / DirectX 11 Windows 8 based.
2- Can support up to four GPU (either SLI or CF).
3- Uses clip maps.
4- Two cloud layers can be created with options for none, cumulous, cumulous nimbus, and stratus.
5- Terrain shadow projection is supported.
6- World can be as large as the designer wishes them to be, it is more of a question of development time / map detail.
7- Option to project map on globe surface.

Swaaaeeeet!

Would you look at that?

1- DirectX 11 / DirectX 11 Windows 8 based.
2- Can support up to four GPU (either SLI or CF).
3- Uses clip maps.
4- Two cloud layers can be created with options for none, cumulous, cumulous nimbus, and stratus.

Looks like lots of future proofing going on here, not to mention actually making a game with modern graphics. Good stuff.

From what I understand, it's a completely new graphics engine for DCS. EDGE is also supposed to come with a dedicated server for MP etc. Basically it's a huge upgrade to the existing graphics engine to modernize it. This is what I understand anyhow.

Nevada Update

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1902741&postcount=4

Attached is an image that displays the area covered by the Nevada map for DCS. This is a 300x300 km area that includes three functional airfields: Nellis AFB, Creech AFB, and Groom Lake (aka Area 51 / Dreamland).

The immediate areas around these three airbases use 1 meter texture resolution. The outlying areas of the map are 16 meter resolution, and the areas in between are between 2 and 4 meter resolution. While we would love to cover the entire map in 1 meter resolution, there needs to be a balance of resolution vs. map file size. Even with the use of lower resolution textures in places, the map is already 26 GB.

After the map is released, it is quite possible that we will expand it, add additional detail, new airfields, etc. as we did for the Black Sea map.

As mentioned earlier, we are close to moving EDGE and this map into DCS. Once this is done, we can start the process of debugging and tuning. Given that this is the first EDGE-based map to be in DCS, we are not sure exactly how long this process will take.

I'd hate to say it, but I will....I'm feeling non clipping trees again.....I'd give almost anything for clipping trees in DCS (and clod)...very needed since I fly helos in DCS....

...till F-18 I use BMS for modern air...maybe the F-15c(non DCS...such a let down) release will get my attention since they said ED did a nice single player campaign.....but I wont buy the FC series package....I wait for more clickable stuff (the Mig-21 is going to get my money)....and I pray for a DCS american attack helo...I would take a cobra because it will fit with the huey and F-18 better then the Apache...but I like Apaches and would take one...an early model would be equal to the BS and a Longbow would be overkill....but like they always say, "There's no kill, like overkill."....I'd fly it...

New update by Matt Wagner about the Nevada map:

"Update:

Today we incorporated the new trees and high elevation forests into the map (once the map is in DCS, we can evaluate the performance impact of tree collision and decide what we will do). We are also in the process of now converting the 100 meter per pixel elevation mesh to 10 meter. Once that is done, we will recalculate all the terrain shadow projections, normal maps, and object shadows. Today the team also started to set up the ground shading and sun lighting color parameters that we believe will start to give the world a much more natural look. The biggest challenge has been finding the right balance of ground textures between visual detail and map file size.

Not a promise, but if all goes well, I hope to have some new images or a video for you all on Friday."

Unfortunately, we were not able to incorprate the new mesh, lighting and shadows this week. However, I have included a video I created earlier that you might find interesting.

This video is captured from the terrainviewer of the work in progress Nevada Test and Training Ranger (NTTR) Map being build for DCS. This is not running in DCS at this time though and many elements are not complete and require tuning. Please note that we are creating Las Vegas in a "representational" level and it is not our intent to model it building for building.

This isn't something that can easily be made realistic, usually shading and lighting brings a good picture to life. You can have the best graphic engine possible, but it still depends on the capabilities of the graphic artist. If the graphic engine is capable and the sims graphics require adjustments there will be talented people in the mod community who will be able to tweak the terrain graphics accordingly.

I'm curious to find out whether they've done away with all the 2d 'painted' buildings on the ground and whether we can crash/land on/blow up all the trees/buildings/cars and goodies on the map or not.

I mean, the whole point of any well crafted map with beautiful high res textures and accurately modeled high polygon buildings is so that we can drop bombs on it and shoot rockets at it.

It's always that last 10%...

Over the last few months, the team has made tremendous progress on both the NTTR art assets and getting EDGE working in DCS. Although we had hoped to have this wrapped up by the end of the year (never promised), I don't see that happening. There are half a dozen art issues that need to be resolved, EDGE integration into DCS will probably not be completed until Mid-December, and beta testing of the map within DCS has of course not been able to start yet.

Nevertheless, progress is being made... just not as fast as we all would like.

With the completion of the airbase lights at Nellis and Creech, all major art and geometry components of the NTTR map are now complete. We are now waiting for the integration of EDGE and the new map data system into DCS to allow the importing of new maps such as the NTTR.

The NTTR map is essentially done. We are now waiting for EDGE to be incorporated into DCS and set up the a new file structure that will be required to support multiple maps.

Ok, yesterday I found the smartgraf company. I think has the "Minsk team" (the Address of that company as in Minsk) appears on the old WW2 KickStarter but now has a "official" company dedicated to build maps to entertainment and professional simulator. The EDGE build developer team?(only my speculation). The logo is very similar to Belsimtek (Belsimtek has address site on Minsk), and show EDGE system, EDGE editor and talk about DCS: World.

Wow!!!! :stunned:

I watched the two Youtube videos featured at the link you provided.

The Oculus view flying through the tall buildings was amazing. I use the technique of viewing it with my eyes crossed, then relaxing my vision slightly to get three screens -- the middle one is in 3D. Not only is the cockpit in 3D (like Clod using Nvidia's 3D Vision), but the buildings & terrain are also in 3D (unlike Clod). Truly amazing!

The second video shows tremendous detail in the terrain, buildings, and moving traffic. Lots of trees, shrubbery and other objects far beyond the Mars-scape of the previous Nevada Edge demo. Awesome! The only nitpick I have of this WIP is that the clouds in the video beginning looked blown-out white and ill-defined (ie blurry). Hopefully that will be resolved by release.

Wondering now if my PC can run all this smoothly!

Thanks for the look-see, S.D. :salute:

Hi Snapper,
As I understand it, DX11 is going to offload much of the graphics work to the graphics card. I've been reading that the graphics card used will make the difference. Also, I read that DCS with EDGE will only be using 1 core because of the offload.

DCS newsletter update 30/04/15 - link to DCS forums post (http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=142724)

Includes this video showing the NTTR map in DCS 2.0 (EDGE) is looking great (which apparently has not been sped up):

https://youtu.be/LMOzd89daiU

DCS World 2
Each day we are making more progress in moving DCS World 2. Since the previous newsletter, the team has made great progress on AI landing logic, an all-new multiplayer interface that includes such features as Favorites and Filters, new smoke effects, improvements to the lighting and shadows, replaced the general ground texture with a higher resolution one, increased new terrain graphics performance, the ability to load and work with different maps in the Mission Editor, improvements to the Graphical User Interface (GUI), dedicated server, and a new protection system.

We often read questions regarding how the current Black Sea map will look in DCS World 2. Rather than try to describe this in words, we have included a non-edited gameplay video of the freely available Su-25T Instant Action mission “SAM Killer”. We hope this will paint a clear picture.

Video: https://youtu.be/xaKkwChLE5c

We are burning the midnight oil and we will release an alpha of Nevada Test and Training Range map once we feel it is ready. Before we can do so though, there are still several items that need to be addressed. These will also include: completing the new multiplayer interface, performance optimization, various unified .exe issues, remaining crashes, and some night lighting issues.

DCS: L-39 Albatros
The next aircraft module to be released by Eagle Dynamics will be the L-39 Albatros. The front and back cockpit are nearing completion as you can see in the included video. This video also gives you another look at the Black Sea map in DCS World 2.

Video: https://youtu.be/Xo6chhW9pPk
Primary aspects to still complete are an all-new external model and the completion of the cockpit systems and flight dynamics.

The biggest innovation for this aircraft, and a big part of our reason choosing it, was the inclusion of multiple network players in the same aircraft. This technology has been a big focus of the team as of late. This has also been a big reason for our re-design of the multiplayer interface. It is to be determined if this features will be part of the initial beta release.

DCS World 2: Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) Map

We are further improving the Nevada map and moving it closer to Alfa. Items being worked on include adding the various TACAN and VORTAC stations, improving the mountain textures, improving ground object shadowing, and adding collision models to most ground objects.

Included is a video demonstrating the urban density possible with DCS World 2 and the tremendous sense of speed it provides when flying at low altitude. No, no time acceleration is used.

Video: https://youtu.be/LMOzd89daiU

DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map

When not working on the Nevada map, our map team is making steady progress on the Strait of Hormuz Map. Most of the airfields are now placed and a great deal of work is being done on manually improving the elevation mesh and textures. However, this map still has a long way to go with items such as airfield taxi routing, water textures, airbase lighting, ground object placement, navigation aids, and ATC still needed to be addressed.

DCS: Combined Arms 1.5

A lot of new work is going into Combined Arms in regards to improved user control (particularly from the external unit movement control), intercom messages, and improved AI. While a bit too early to show off these new features in this newsletter, we hope to be showing these advancements off soon.

DCS: P-47D and DCS: Spitfire

Work continues on the object models, cockpit systems and flight models, but there is nothing new to show this month.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet

Work is mostly focused on the air-to-ground radar that is making good progress; the team is now starting to create the various sub-modes such as the expanded modes. We have included a couple of images that show samples of the new air-to-ground radar technology that is based on radar reflectivity logic.

I suspect weather is HARD.
FSX has the ability to do live update of weather - which is nice.
But even though I have Australian Terrain etc - I NEVER see the towering thunderheads and storm cells we get every afternoon in the Wet here in Darwin. I'd love a good tropical weather add on.

And I'd love some miserable foggy chanel crossings on instruments for CLOD.

There's an aspect of bus driving to the bombers. Some nasty weather would add a bit of tension.

I just really hope that the LOD issue is solved. It's nearly impossible spotting contacts on the current map. In modern jets it's not so importent but if they really want to do WWII, it needs to happen. If War Thunder can do it DCS certainly can. While I don't actually fly WT, I have seen videos (Karaya's) and the spotting is excellent.
That and multiplayer server numbers are what really matter to me. I already love the flight models.

ED are introducing something which will help spotting at a distance. We don't have full details just yet. Also I think the improved terrain will just naturally help with spotting. Sometimes in the current version the contact just gets lost in the clutter as the ground details aren't too sharp.

I don't think they have the colors quite right, especially the area around Vegas where there is more red in the rocks (check out Valley of fire state park). Also the area around Charleston peak is a forest so it will be more green and a lot of the sand is lighter in color, more like a dirty cream color, not to mention the shoreline around Lake Mead that had been below the water line in the past is white. I think the shots I have seen do not have enough color or contrast in the color to accurately represent the area.
