View Full Version : So here is the issue plaguing my setup...

Here's my situation... I unfortunately have two 5870's (factory OC'd) in a crossfire setup, which have been a plague in this sim since the beginning.
The first issue at hand as many ATI owners may know, is the green smoke bug... In order to have the normal white smoke instead of some nuclear alternative, we have to load the game in an offline mission or quick mission before we load into a multiplayer session. You may find yourself asking what kind of coding job was done to have the smoke textures come out green when loading a multiplayer session for the first load into game?! I know I do every time it happens, It's pure insanity... And now you might be thinking, why don't you just deal with it and load it offline first Irongull? Well, dealing with that issue has led me to believe there is an even greater issue that needs to be looked into...
Here's what happens...
If I load the game fresh into a multiplayer(or offline quick/normal mission) session and I finally spawn into the game world, it loads pretty fast and I have a steady 60 fps(v-sync) with little to no stuttering. Now if the game reloads into a new map, say from a server map change or even going from the pre-load offline(so I don't have green smoke) to a multiplayer session, spawning into the the game world slows to a crawl and it stutters like crazy and I lose almost half my fps. Also coming up on aircraft becomes the same old stutter show and it's almost impossible to get guns on them.
I'm not sure if this is just an ATI crossfire issue, or ATI in general, or an issue for everyone... But it's definitely diminishing my will to log in unfortunately. If anyone else could test out this issue and share their results, could you please do? I would like to help solve this... Thanks in advance guys!

Hi Irongull,
I run two ATI Radeon 6970 cards with Crossfire. I too get the green smoke if I don't start a single player mission first. Something we have to live with for the time being I guess? :grrr:
I can only suggest the usual series of steps:
Clear the cache.
Have latest CCC driver (13.9???).
Turn off virus software.
Don't overclock the cards too much (are they 2gb or 1gb cards?).
Vsync doesn't help my set up one little bit.
Keep AA down to 2 or 4x.
I have all Video Options set to max.
Do the Dotnet 4 or 4.5 repair regularly.
Do the DirectX setup repair regularly.
Try limiting the FPS to say, 40 with a suitable program.
Is your CPU running at 4000 or above? I have set mine lower at 3,800 which seems more stable.
Screen refresh at 60hz.
Screen res at 1920x1080.
My cards never reach full performance with CLoD - they run at between 35% and 55% (weird but true).
Card temperatures always below 60 degrees.
I sometimes get annoying micro stutters on the ATAG server but believe this is more to do with internet connection than the system.
I would be interested to hear others' comments and perhaps between us we can optimise the ATI performance?
Probably not much help but I share your pain.
About bloody time AMD came up with a specific profile!!!!!

Well, here's the thing... On the first load the game runs flawless. On the next load of a new map, the stutters are massive and the FPS is cut drastically and unfortunately to not have the green smoke, is necessary for us.
I have no issues with a fresh load(That sounds too weird! lol)... Doesn't it seem odd to you that the game runs flawless on the first load, but gets bogged down on the second without a game restart? Try it, I guarantee it happens to you also. Load straight into multiplayer and fps START SHOW, then restart the game and load a quick mission first to get rid of the green smoke, exit and load up a multiplayer session, then do fps START SHOW and look at the difference.
Something's definitely wrong, and it's definitely software related...

I'm running the Beta drivers and find them very stable But you still have the green smoke start in single player BS before starting multiplayer. link to AMD beta downloads but please research before downloading:salute:

Hey, thanks for that tip... It appears that it's more stable. I'm wondering if it's the way the game loads/handles GPU memory, it looks like it's swapping on the fly... Shouldn't it be clearing the old memory after each new map load and starting fresh? I have a feeling that would cure my situation.
Apparently the 13.9 drivers were not good to flight simmers!
Also on another note... Anyone with ATI who has FSX, the BETA patch mentioned above fixed the crash to desktop when trying to esc to menu! I was very happy about that also...
Hopes for the best! S~ and Thank You!

Glad it helped,I was shocked that after installing a $1,000 card and updated to the latest drivers that I sat there with my mouth open that AMD could release such crap with the top end cards so much so I went and purchased the Titan but it seems it's also let down with some driver problems . maybe team fusion could give them all a hand:recon: to sort it out as I have more faith in TF than I do those clowns. Lots of forum talk but no action.

Hey Irongull
In the early days of Cliffs I was running an ATI 5970 which was a dual GPU card. Whilst not technically a crossfire setup, its dual GPUs did run as such. I had the same experience as you....great initial FPS on the first mission loaded, then severely reduced performance thereafter. I spent countless hours trying to figure it out to no avail. Still does my head in now to think about it. I never had the green smoke bug thankfully.
I moved to nvidia after a while and have had no problems since. Running a gtx780 currently.
Cheers
