To celebrate the upcoming release of patch 4.01 with new and improved Anti-Lawndart Technology (tm) I will release a TF MOD 4.01 compatible version of the Battle for Malta.

The TF Mod version is fully TF Mod compatible and missions are designed to use all TF Mod features.

You will get the full 23 mission Battle for Malta mission set with more than 100 flyable sorties featuring Luftwaffe, RAF and Italian aircraft in historically based missions with Med skins.

This is quite exciting for me on a personal level because my Dad was stationed on Malta in '42. For those who don't know much about the history, Malta was a terribly grim place back then. Air raids as often as 10 times a day and so little food that casualties had to be evacuated if they were to have to have any chance of recovery. People were right on the edge of starvation most of the time - not that the aircrews typically survived very long there. A few trips and most were gone. On one particular occasion his aircraft was bounced shortly after takeoff and shot into the sea. When the crew got fished out, Air Sea rescue told him they typically left Axis airmen to their fate. This was partly due to the extreme food shortages and partly due to sheer bloody-mindedness. Malta wasn't a happy place in late 41/42.

Woohoo, that is so awesome to hear.
I have been so admiring the screenshots you have been posting of this campaign, and saddened because I did not have a vanilla install to run it on.
Now I will be able to run it, really looking forward to it, and thank you!

Yes, that was my inspiration in creating the mission set...my grandfather was a sailor on the HMAS Nizam, which was based in the Med in '41-42. The last four missions of the campaign replicate a convoy run he made from Alexandria to Malta.

You are blessed to have had a dad like that, Wulf. Thanks for sharing a bit about him here.

Just want to be sure I calibrate expectations. This is not a new Mediterranean/Malta map. It is a 28 Mission single player mission pack, which uses the TF 4.01 Autumn landscape (no trees) and the Isle of Wight standing in for Malta.

Having said what it is not, here is what it is:

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww152/whirlybirda2a/malta_zpscf7f3ab4.jpg

The set comprises 28 missions, with more than 150 flyable sorties, each sortie with its own mission briefings and targets. Missions have been carefully crafted based on published historical accounts. Mission briefings include historical photographs from the seige of Malta.

Fly for either/both the Luftwaffe, RAF or Regia Aeronautica - you choose. Missions have been adjusted to take advantage of TF 4.0 flight models and new objects. Flyable aircraft include: G50, BR20, Bf109E4/N, Bf110C4/7, Stuka, Ju88, He111; Hurricane I (Rotol 100oct), Spitfire Ia (100 oct), and Blenheim. Med skins are used where available for all aircraft.

Dozens of historic locations have been painstakingly recreated using period photographs and maps: Hal Far, Takali, Luqa, Trapani and Catania airfields, Grand Harbour/Valetta, Kalafrana seaplane base, Taranto Harbour, Tripoli Harbour, and Alexandria Harbour among them.

AAA concentrations on Malta have been mapped according to Royal Artillery records, including both types and locations, and AAA density increases as the missions progress, reflecting historical AAA buildups. By the end of the campaign, AAA fire over Malta is deadly to any unwary attacker. As an Axis pilot you will need to take account of heavy AAA concentrations to plan your attack.

Every conceivable mission type is catered for: ground attack, naval attack, scramble, fighter cover, fighter escort, bombing, dive bombing, torpedo bomber escort, combat air patrol, recon, check flight and massed aerial engagements. All missions are based on historical events.

And did I mention? It will be TF4.01 compatible...

Q&A

Is this a completely new map?

No, it simply uses the TF Autumn map (no trees) to simulate the Med theatre. The Isle of Wight stands in for Malta (almost identical in size), the UK coast for Sicily, and the French coast for North Africa.

Is this compatible with the Team Fusion mod 4.01?

Totally

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww152/whirlybirda2a/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR077_zps0a812b89.jpg (http://s715.photobucket.com/user/whirlybirda2a/media/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR077_zps0a812b89.jpg.html)

Do I need to do any tricky installation?

No, Battle for Malta comes with a self installer that installs all the mission files, skins and briefing graphics for you. Just run the .exe, follow the prompts and you will find all the Battle for Malta missions in your Single Missions menu

Do I have to fly for the RAF? I want to fly Italian or German machines

No, these are single missions which means you can fly ANY and EVERY flyable aircraft in the mission. Every flyable aircraft/unit has its own unique briefing, objectives and mission. If you don't fly it, the AI will, and each mission features several flights or squadrons all completing independent missions while you fly yours.

If you enable 'aircraft switching' in the options menu, you can even change aircraft mid flight, or if you want, change sides completely!

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww152/whirlybirda2a/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR046_zpse63eaf62.jpg (http://s715.photobucket.com/user/whirlybirda2a/media/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR046_zpse63eaf62.jpg.html)

The mission set starts with Italian vs British aircraft, and I only want to fly German

The mission set reflects the history of the Battle of Malta. Missions 1-9 focus on the initial Italian attack in 1940. Missions 10-19 on the arrival (and departure) of the Luftwaffe Fliegerkorps X in early 1941, and missions 20-28 on the late 1941 seige when convoys had to run the gauntlet of both Italian and Luftwaffe air attacks.

Which was a long way of saying, if you want to fly German, start at mission 10!

These skins are not appropriate to the unit types that fought in Malta

Well spotted. This package is a bit of a kludge, to give the look and feel of a Med campaign, but is far from being accurate in all respects.

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww152/whirlybirda2a/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR029_zpsf439e580.jpg (http://s715.photobucket.com/user/whirlybirda2a/media/reduxlw/reduxlw003/maltaAAR029_zpsf439e580.jpg.html)

Did you add any new aircraft?

No, the package will use the aircraft already available in CoD TF Mod 4.01, which luckily include most of the main combatants who fought in 1940. At the moment adding new aircraft to the sim is a way off, though new variants of what we already have are possible.

Is anyone else working on a Malta or Mediterranean map?

Yes, Team Fusion has it in the pipeline, though there is no word on a release date. You can be assured that if they do it, it will be with great accuracy and attention to detail though.

Will this pork my default or TF Mod installation of Cliffs of Dover?

No, these are just mission files, screenshots and skins, no system files or mods.

Where can I download it?

I will post the download on Airwarfare.com as soon as hotfix 4.01 is released.

What? Why not sooner?

The missions are only compatible with TF mod 4.01. If you use it with TF Mod 3.01, you will not get the right map, or aircraft. If you use it with 4.0 the missions don't work due to the bug with AI aircraft crashing into the ground.

Cheers,

Heinkill

The extra time take to release 4.01 has given me time to take the missions up to 30...now including 3 bonus missions which make the most of the autumn and winter maps...
