After flying 3 days with the inclusion of the SpitIIa, I've never had better dogfights ever. I had at least 10 five minute fights well over 6500m tonight alone!

What an absolute blast this has been! I flew 11 sorties today - 26 kills 0 deaths - in some of the toughest, most rewarding dog fights I've ever flown in IL2COD - while in a 109. I think someone is gonna have to pry me out of this 109 now

SpitIIa drivers - Bring it on! :)

Good times.

Thanks all!

Yesterday was the first real lengthy session I've been able to play for a while, and in spite of a huge number of launcher crashes (usually when bang on the 6 of a 109), it was spectacularly good fun.

I spent most of my time in a Mk 1a flying out of Ramsgate to defend Manston and racked up quite a few kills for once.

One strafing 110 blew up over the aerodrome in spectacular fashion, to many 'oohs' and 'aahs' over teamspeak. I had to fly through the fireball and debris and the sense of 'being there' was fantastic.

I'd say that's a good reason to leave the IIa's at Manston, so the rest of us can take on the strafers and the IIa's get a chance to take off and take on the B & Z 109 jockeys.

Fantastic day's play. :dthumb: :salute:

Hey Bliss, that is good to read, motivates me to fire up CloD again.

Saw last weekend that the old ADW gang (71AG and MK) doing their shifts on ATAG now and thought that not only the reds will have a hard time, but also the rest of the blue pilots looking for a entertainment (above 4000m) will trouble finding anything not engaged in the "Hawkinge-Arena-Roundabout". But I was wrong, even found 3 Hurricanes at 5000m all waiting for me and my small Ju88 flight... ;) well, the Hurricanes lined up behing me instead of the bombers, so at least I saved my detachment for a while.

I noticed that the pilots still leave their planes in flight by ESC and create, if you are interested I can send you my July 1940 setup, so you can have a look? Actually I didnґt want to puplish that before it is finished and working, so I am waiting for a patch to fix the mission menu bug, but I think you could easily implement the teamscore, penalty (for death and leaving plane in flight) and total plane-number-limit system.

"Takka takka takka takka takka takka.........."

Speaking about myself, of course. Last night I grabbed a Spitfire IIa at Manston and climbed posthaste to meet up with Marz (also in a IIa) who was approaching the French coast at about 15,000 feet. He was calling out various sightings and I wet my lips in anticipation. "Hang on, Marz, and leave some for me!"....as I poured the coals on in my much-vaunted IIa. Rocketing up to 20K and well out over the Channel I could first spot a small bomber formation heading towards Dover, then faintly some smaller gnats behind them swirling about. Leveling off and retrimming, I coarsened my prop pitch and reduced my throttle a smidge. Temps a little high, pressures are good -- less load on the Merlin will fix the temps so I left the radiator about 3/4 closed. The little "gnats" were now starting to look like airplanes, and Marz was giving me a continuous update on which one he was "That's me in the middle!" comes to mind......LOL

As I gently nosed over my killer-IIa I picked out my soon-to-be-victim. My airspeed rapidly picked up and a quick glance showed 410 mph AIS, with my Spit "singing to me" as it creaked and groaned hurtling to our destiny. "Uh, Snapper, don't go too fast!" warned Marz as I shot through the melee at warp speed. No chance to adjust course to keep my quarry in my sights, I felt a bit like Inspector Clouseau when he stormed the castle by swinging on a rope through the enemy control room completely unnoticed. Arrrgh! Viciously pulling back on my control stick, my world blacked out from g forces as I zoomed back into the fray....

As the clouds of blackness dissolved around me the glare of the sun now conspired to blind me once again as I hung on my prop, engine screaming, my speed rapidly decreasing as I passed back through 16,000 feet. I now uttered my famous battle cry, intended to freeze my enemy's blood in his veins: "Uh, where'd everybody go?"

Marz's familiar voice crackled (crackled? On Teamspeak? Hey, piss off everyone. This is MY story!) into my headphones, "We're on the deck somewhere near Calais. Just one 109 and me.". Down I go again, this time with a little less vigor. Sure enough, as I got lower and guided by Marz's directions I see their two planes doing some kind of yo-yo dance in the distance. "Watch out, Snapper, he's dragging me over an airfield and the flak is vicious!!!!" Meanwhile, white bursts of vicious flak were bursting all around me as I roared across an airfield at naught feet. Pushing my throttle to the wall I topped 280 mph as I skillfully shot through one airfield only to suddenly burst upon ANOTHER airfield with a fresh crop of AAA gunners waiting for me. My 1,250 hp lawnmower cleared a swath for all to follow as, after what seemed forever, I finally emerged unscathed with a few desultory bursts behind me bidding farewell.

Throttling back I gave up all hope of connecting with Marz by this time. He was out of fuel and ammo and heading home......and I was fast running out of friends in THIS neighbourhood. Charting a course for home, I opted to stay on the deck as I steered well away from any further enemy airfields. At least I hadn't taken any hits and I knew my green and brown mottled camouflage would safely conceal my presence from Axis eyes. In fact, it was quite relaxing following the gentle contours of this rich French farmland as I.....WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! (actually it was Clunk! Clunk! Clunk! But piss off, this is MY story) as red tracer bracketed my once-beautiful and "invincible" Spitfire IIa! As I desperately kicked rudder and hauled desperately on the stick, I desperately looked behind to see a yellow-nosed 109 somewhat less desperately sending me his warmest greetings. I knew he was secretly admiring my unmatched skill at stall recovery 20 feet above terra firma. As it turned out three seconds later, terra VERRA firma! :( At least the monitor screen went mercifully black do I didn't have to witness the horrible sight of a Spitfire IIa tail section protruding from a smoking hole!

As I looked at my Info Window I saw two things:

1) "Spitfire IIa flown by ATAG_Snapper destroyed by Bf109 E-something flown by ATAG_Bliss"....and
2) "Hiya, Snapper! S! :) (yes, he included the phuquing smiley face)

Oh well. Maybe if we had Spit 5's. With cannons......BIG ones!

Good comment Bliss.
A good 109 pilot having to actually work for a kill. Gotta be more job satisfaction
in that. As for my IIa experience so far...it's like the game has been reborn. Being
able to mix it with a good 109 pilot is a new level of enjoyment. The IIa is not
invincible and still as vulnerable as ever to the infernal 109 20mm. The lesser
experienced 109 pilots who want to take on a IIa in a turn fight deserve all the
heartache that comes with that learning curve. Not quite as easy to break off and
climb or run. Although Alambash makes his 109 do turns that I didn't think were
possible.
The Russian Mafia have only 1 objective when they clock on now, rape and pillage
at Manston. Was brutal when I was on yesterday but it was kinda awsome
hearing those Diamler Benz's screaming over the field at treetop level. The flak is
still no impediment to them & the Ia's & Hurris that tried to intervene mostly
ended up adding to the carnage. Despite that it's still good to be able to take the
fight up to them when we can get in the air. Now an axis pilot has to consider
whether it's a Ia or a IIa he's about to take on. Good, keep em guessing and
butcher the careless mercilessly :goofy:

Hi Snafu - I'm very interested. My only fear with that can't leave the plane script was if someone accidently had no fuel/couldn't start their engine upon spawning that the only way they'd be able to fly again would be reconnecting again.

As far as the flights, minus a who of the fellas to the east, it seems like it's slowly progressed upwards. Just when I think 6500 is enough I soon find an E off in the distance even higher! I've never ran out of fuel so many times while playing this game. Sorta makes me wish we had the only 75 gal drop tanks of the later birds I used to take in the old game while getting altitude.

It's definitely an improvement to say the least. And now with some general orders for both sides, I've seen multiple escorted heavy flights and those trying to attack them. It's been really fun the last few days!

Well, thank you, JT! I have fun writing these little stories, and my wife can tell when I do when she asks "What are you sniggering at?" as I'm typing away on my iPad. :)

Hopefully Marz and Bliss will forgive me for dragging their names into this tawdry tale. LOL Actually, they both were there and will no doubt vouch that the details were roughly accurate. Well....very roughly!

This little report clearly demonstrates how deadly the Spitfire IIa can be in the right hands. Unfortunately, I don't have those right hands....:no. I have to say, flying the IIa is a dream after flying the 1a, but obviously the pilot has to know what he's doing to fully exploit its performance against a well-flown 109.

Glad you got your 30mm problem worked out in the end. Asked the doctor, "Rectum?". Answered the paramedic, "Yep! Damn near killed him!"

Using ESC on the ground is usually no problem, only using ESC in flight gets penalized.

I will upload the my files when I find some opportunity, but the script is over 3000 lines and not really commented, so could be a little challanging. But if you guy need some help implementing drop me line and I can give it a try.
