According to Leo McKistry in 'Hurricane' the first 4 Hurricanes on the island were tropicalised Hurricane Mk 1s that had been sent to Alexandria in Egypt originally.

Pic here: yes, two bladed props

The next batch were flown off the HMS Argus aircraft carrier. You can see photographs here, and they were three prop blade types.

The island got a mixed bag of Mk 1s and Mk IIs through 1940 and 1941.

Thanks, but i meant they looked like Dehaviland two-pitch three bladed props, like the DH 520 hurricanes we have in game.
Rather impressive if that is the case. for some reason I find it hard to believe they had such outdated equipment, but hey Sea Gladiators for christs sake.

Malta got the worst of the worst.

"When the RAF commander Basil Embry made a tour of inspection of Malta's fighter defences in early 1942, he heard vociferous complaints about the Hurricane. 'I hear the Axis pilots fly in front of our machines to taunt us with the superiority of their 109s. This is likely to have an adverse effect on morale'. The plane certainly had an adverse effect on the morale of 249 Squadron's Tom Neill, who says he was 'struck dumb' when told by the RAF in 1941 that he would be conducting operations on Malta in a Hurrican Mk I. "Oh no, not again! Not the old out-distanced, out-performed, out-everythinged Mark I!"

From Hurricane by Leo McKistry

The crime was that at this time, Leigh Mallory was again wasting his pilots and machines with stupid tactics, this time his 'lean forward into Europe' running circuses and rhubarbs over France, and throwing away Spitfires for no real purpose, while Malta and Nth Africa made do with clapped out Hurricanes until the first Spits arrived in 1942.

First Hurricane II's arrived in March of 1941. After that, all Hurricane's arriving at Malta were II's.

You could be right. Not according to McKistry or Holland, but sources can differ, that much I have learned!

McKistry describes the supply of 48 Mk 1 Hurricanes in May 1941 led by Tom Neill, from the carrier Ark Royal, which at 5 hours 25 minutes Neill claimed was the longest ever flight completed in a Mk I. Also on 15 May '41 the Vice Admiral of Malta, Ford, wrote to Churchill complaining about the Mk I Hurricanes supplied to Malta and urgently requesting more modern types. Churchill replied that he believed it was a sign of poor morale for pilots to blame their machines.

James Holland confirms the same in 'Fortress Malta', and he lists the first Mk IIs as arriving in June, when a whopping 143 Hurricanes were delivered. This was after Fliegerkorps X departed the theatre May 25, so all through that time the RAF on Malta had been making do with Mk Is.

Whenever the Mk IIs did arrive, they were also a cause of much frustration because the first to arrive were not 'tropicalised' and so 'managed to suck up every particle of dust and filth thrown up by our airscrews'.

At the time, there were 73 Squadrons of Spits based in Britain, but though AOC Portal was minded to heed the call to send Spits to Malta, Fighter Command's Sholto Douglas argued against adding another aircraft type to the mix in the MTO, and doubted Spitfires could stand up to the conditions.

As you can read, I am no fan of Bader, Douglas, Leigh Mallory and Co.!
