View Full Version : Apparently this gunsmoke is correct on the DCS P-51? Looks (and is) truly awful!

I posted this on the Eagle Dynamics forums and most people agree apart from tttigger. His reply to me saying the smoke was fine was:

"I can't recall seeing any film showing a P-51D firing its guns. Gun camera footage, sure, but not external film showing the guns themselves.

I've seen many .50s fired for real (and fired quite a few myself) but never six simultaneously in flight. Here is a film of a P-51D firing its guns on the ground and there is considerable smoke:

Some research to see what it really looked like on a P-51D in flight would be helpful instead of saying you don't like it. Something more objective would be a better argument."

So, check out that smoke...yes, there is 'some', no, it isn't a fog cloud that can't be seen through.

I just posted this footage online of the DCS P-51 firing it's guns and also tracked down some .50 calibre footage from moving aircraft.

Here's my footage:

I wonder how many P-51 pilots were shot down as they couldn't see through the opaque gunsmoke fog that surrounded them on an attack run?

While I really like DCS P-51 and the great attention to detail in it's FM, there really are some features that could do with a bit of love

Gunsmoke really needs to be dialled back if it is compared to this real footage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIWCCL_AzoA

If you watch the real footage from 1m 10sec you can see that while the gun produces smoke, it is not opaque and certainly doesn't block the view? Take also into account that these aircraft would be travelling at at-least 150mph and the smoke would not hang around like it is seen in the real footage which steadily builds up.

Check out this footage of a P-47 which has 8x .50 Calibre guns, all firing on a strafing run. Look how the smoke extends as a short thin trail behind the wing. Now remove a gun from each wing....does DCS P-51 really match that effect? Example of gun smoke from P-47 at 25m 20 secs and again just before 25m 30 secs

And finally would the smoke really do what it shows in my video? It looks really wrong as it moves in a clockwise circle from the guns?

Hopefully it will be tweaked/corrected or fixed in a future update. I mean, am I wrong here or is tttigger just trolling?

Cheers, MP

The gun smoke is truly awful - a LOT of visual FX in the current DCS series are truly awful. Hopefully their updates and work with Ilya will include some love for the SFX.

Theres no defending that gun smoke. It looks so bad that I would consider it a "bug" rather than an effect

For some reason it lingers next to the aircraft while the guns are firing, then instantly disappears when they stop. Its a complete failure of an effect unfortunately.

It's shit and they know it. It remains to be seen if they will do anything about it. WAAAAAAAYYYYY over done.

It seems a little overdone...if the .50 produced that amount of smoke in RL I think the P-38 guys would have had some serious problems :)

It might not be so much over done (although I suspect it is) as failing to react appropriately with the speed of the airflow over the wings. It seems to linger way too long over the airframe.

Love the Thunderbolt doco. I particularly like the scene at (33.29??) with the pilot having a stress relieving fag on the trip back from the Italian mainland. Classic.

Surprised the owner of that P-51 was allowed to install real fire capable .50's...

Load them up, take off, and someone could make a mess of Congress or the White House long before any F-16's showed up.

And yes, the DCS smoke looks like cr*p.

The 'murican level was so high in that vid, he couldn't have possibly been a terrorist.

Maybe you get those DCS gun 'clouds' at extreme altitude?

The gun smoke in clod looks beautiful, the amount of smoke, the way it runs over the wing and trails behind for a distance before disapating, fantastic.

DCS P51 gunsmoke Effect looks disgusting to me (just a personal opinion), as to do a lot of the hit effects of the bullets, on planes, on ground targets, on the ground or water, personally i think they look horrible.

I got DCS and the P51 in early Jan this year (on sale) on the recommendation of a friend. The first time i fired the guns i couldn't believe how bad the graphic effects were including the amount and look of the tracer as well as the smoke and hit effects. Everything else looks great, plane flies nice, the K14 works well, good performance graphics/computer wise, But the weapons modelling left me feeling disappointed.

Perhaps the US had a special "Black powder load" for the .50's in the P51.... LOL!.... JOKE!

So heres hoping some of the effects get a re-work.

I think it's simply the same smoke effect from the A10c slapped on the p51.

Looks great on the A10c, but not so hot on the p51.

It might even be placed x6 (once for each MG). I say that because the smoke is a lot thicker than the A10.

Hopefully this stuff gets optimized. The game effects are god aweful in general. Simply look at the smoke stacks on houses for example. Not only do they look odd with their Y shape, but they are also a waste of processor power since they spawn almost 25-50 small smoke textures. Aircraft wrecks (fire) spawns hundreds of small smoke textures.

Look at 19:28, you will see the smoke from a Mustang. Not nearly as much as modelled. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCiHa0h-6Rs

I'm sorry but that smoke just looks retarded. If they don't change it I will just turn it off

Is possible to turn it off?

I fired up the P51 today for the first time in ages and was shocked when I saw it, then I found this post and the one on Eagle.
It never used to be like that.
There is a temp fix though that worked, just remove the smoke file.
