Duxford 2014 - The Jolly Boys Outing...

http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/rr232/FS_Lewis/dux09104.jpg

Well folks its that time of year again when we rally the troops and get some interest going for the 'Duxford Flying Legends Airshow'..Europes Largest Gathering of Warbirds..

The dates this year are...Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 July 2014

This will be our 7th year........Beers, WW2 aircraft, Good Company...It doesn't get much better than that!

Here's 2011 trailer...

and 2010 trailer

The tickets this year are £31 per adult (in advance)n or £34.50 (on the day)

Here's the link to the Duxford website....

Every year we camp in a very lovely campsite in Cambridge (I highly recommend it!). A free bus service takes us to the airshow on Saturday morning and in the evenings we share a taxi into Cambridge to get bladdered (drunk)...We camp Friday and Saturday night and leave for home Sunday afternoon...

Here's the address to the campsite, telephone number and link to the campsite website...

If anyone is going and wants to meet up then post in this thread..Meet in the Eagle Pub...or at the Airshow....or on the Campsite...It'd be a real shame if we all get there and not know who is who or meet....That would be just wrong!!

If anyone is interested and doesn't have a tent and if you can get to Cambridge with a sleeping bag, beer, campsite and airshow money we may well be able to fit you in one of our tents...so keep us posted... :D

The famous Eagle Pub with WW2 USAAF and RAF squadron graffitti preserved ceiling and with 'Double Helix' plaque!..Yes at first it starts out as a very educational and inspiring visit...and then we get totally wankered!

Hmm well that sounds like a jolly good excuse to get the tent out and head back to my roots... well almost I'm originally from a bit further East. Assuming I know you guys a bit better by July that is and assuming I'm not intruding. Duxford is one airshow I've not been to before.

The wife says "no" so I'll drive down on the day with my brother, but thanks anyways.

We met the GERATRIC squad last year.....the 56th boys.

Cool guys.

We have to make this the Cliffs of Dover annual meet this year. Spread the word.

@nitrous...No worries buddy..if you change your mind...then we've usually got space...I mean in 7 years we've never not had room!!

@Frank....Keep in touch as the date gets closer....we see new faces every year...half of the lads who are now regulars simply responded to the 'Jolly Boys' thread and then met us at the campsite...and if you have your own tent then all the merrier..park it next to ours and let the merriment begin!!

As I say we get there friday midday..pitchup, park the cars, meet everyone then start the drinking and the talking of aircraft and flight sims.....Its always good

The campsite is not open for booking yet..they are still in their off season mode at the moment...We have always managed to get a pitch and there has always been plenty of more pitches available....Duxford is not the same unless you come for the weekend and take part in the camping and evening pub..

Well sorry chaps but I'm a little to.civilised for tents :)

The last time I spent a night in a tent I spent the hours moving around in my sleeping bag trying to find a less uncomfortable lump in the ground to sleep on!

Anyway, I am.already booked into.a B+B and looking forward to it :) and the show.

I got tickets to the Gold enclosure for both days but hope to get to the Eagle Pub on the Friday night. I'll slap on a t-shirt with Mysticpuma on it and maybe I can hook up with a few of you to say hello :)

I'm really looking forward to the show and hope we get weather like last-year, would be awesome.

This year I'll just ne taking my stills cameras and leaving the video camera at home..as the DSLR's shoot video anyway.

Looking forward to the show, cheers, MP

That was on an airbed :(

Last time I cooked while camping was in 1984....not only were the fried eggs cooked, I managed to melt the tent too!

I once cooked a barbecue at home. You may remember it as 'the great fire of Bromsgrove'?

Trust me, campsites are safer without me.

I'll just have to make do with the four poster bed and full English breakfast served to me by a lovely host......but I will try and think of you as I drink my Earl Grey, in the dry (please keep the rain away) with the flies kept at bay by the four walls!

I will be there too on Sunday. Last year I went there with my previous squadron, 56RAF, and we had a great time. Funny enough the evening we went to the Eagle Pub in Cambridge, the Saturday evening that is, we only met a few other ClOD pilots including ATAG_Dutch. The rest apparently needed to recover from the Friday-night or had headed home.

This year at least quite a few members of ACG and also some of 56RAF will meet Saturday 12 July 2014 in the swimming pool and at the bar of the Hilton London Stansted Airport Hotel. Rooms are still available there at reasonable prices :D
Of course the more people the merrier.

Oh yes - tickets booked already, bringing the old man with me as it's been ages since he's been to Duxford. We're booked in at the Hilton at Stansted for Saturday night with other ACG delinquents, and going to the Sunday show, but have to admit the camping looks great - cheese and biscuits for heaven's sake! That is pure class! Far above ACG standards :-)

Hardest part was getting used to people's real names - I just gave in, I mean, 'Paul' compared to 'Chalky' or whatever - no contest really is it!

Nitrous - get the T-Shirts done man - can't be outdone by riff raff, what what!

Mar-25-2014, 12:06
Indeed Bunny. Call us toffs but it's the Hilton or nothing, certainly not rubbing shoulders with the 'enlisted men' in tents eh what? :D

ACG will have a decent contingent attending as usual, supplemented by those who come for the day only. So for us it's the Hilton Stansted on Saturday afternoon/evening followed by the Sunday airshow. Hopefully we can meet you chaps, and 56 for the second time (you should be used to Nitrous by now!).

Actually I just got the Gold Pass without the lunch. For the extra cost, I just couldn't justify the fact that I can take a couple of Cheese and Onion rolls and a can of coke for about £2.00 (bought outside of the show of-course!)

Now, just need to get a Team Fusion T-Shirt printed ;)

I almost wish I had been born
a Brit.

Yeah, yeah. You and the rest of the world. :D

They all seem to come here, legally or not, so feel free. It's open house here. Just jump onto the axle of a big lorry in France, get over here and we'll pay you £60 a week out of taxpayers money for simply being here. It's a blast. The fields are really green too. Apart from the ones underwater after the floods that is.

But anyway, Duxford. You've never seen an airshow until you've seen a Fiesler Storch float down vertically and then go straight up before it's wheels touch the ground. Or three early mark Spits performing formation aerobatics, or a flight of Mustangs whistling past at what must've been 500mph after a very long dive, or a B-17 taxi-ing past so close you could touch the wingtip. Man, the sound, the smell......

Duxford. There is nothing like it. The girls singing 1940's classics on the stage are pretty damned fine too.

Sold. Maybe. Possibly. :D

Can't wait for July, I hope that weather will be good as I have already rescheduled Tiger Moth flight once . I was supposed to fly last October but there was a storm that day. I went to RAF Museum in London instead. This time I am travelling to London/Cambridge especially for the flight and airshow. I wish it wasn't so weather dependant.

Dammit, I'm gigging. That weekend in July is always busy with gigs. For 3 or 4 years though I was able to do the best gig in the world, which was play in the band that play the Saturday Night post -display evening do for the Flying Legends pilots, crews, and their partners, in the big pilots marquee. The place is loaded with rich guys, expensive women, top-gun swagger, and testosterone. :) The gig involved hanging out with them of course, free food and drink of course,...and a VIP pass to watch the display from the pilot's enclosure - and get paid decent money to do all that. If Carlsberg did gigs....

Year before last? The year they had the 3 Mk1 Spits and they flew the missing man formation, I was on the gig and got chatting to one of the pilots of the Mk1's. One of them had undercarriage retraction problems, it wasn't him, though his Spit was an early one with the manual undercarriage pump. It had appeared out of the sand at Dunkirk a few years back. He said it wasn't his, sadly, he was flying on behalf of the owner. Nice work if you can get it!

This was him, and the plane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh1S-C1r_mA

Goosepimples every time - can't bloody wait!

This year is a good one - a few weeks time it's me and the son off to Bruntingthorpe's Proving Ground where they haul the Cold War jets out for the aborted take-offs, then a few weeks later the family's off to RAF Cosford's airshow (maybe I can get a shufty at the Do 17...), and finishing off with a weekend away with the ACG lads at Duxford, hopefully with my dad. What a year! Just need to find out where the Lancasters are flying, to finish it all off :D

I shot this at last-years and I have to say the re-enactors really make it feel authentic, so a big amount of praise to them. I have to say it was great and as soon as there was a chance I booked my tickets for this year.

Cheers, MP

Sweet :D - a mate of mine is ground crew on Victor XM715, I did the artwork for the commemorative decal (http://www.victorxm715.co.uk/adecals.htm) that's next to the crew hatch on the port side. I've still not had chance to go and see it in person.

Can't wait for Duxford - tickets are all sorted.

Sweet video Mysticpuma - so you're the chap who does the videos! You're right about the guys and gals kitted out - I would absolutely love to turn up one year in the clobber, in a vintage car.

@Valisk - I'll keep an eye out for the artwork, I know the aircraft, managed to get a seat in the cockpit on an open day a couple of years ago - talk about blind spots! I think one or two ACG members are going to Bruntingthorpe - Teepee is ground crew on the Lightning so he has to be there, and I think one or two others are going as well, though we're not having an official meet up (unless no one has told me ;)).

Bournemouth! That is so far away - I'll have a look at the other events to see if any are doable :)

To anyone in or near Switzerland, this one is really cool too I've heard. I've never been there but planning to go this year.
It' jore focused on modern day aviation, but there are some old timers coming too.

Favour from anybody please. A squadmate of ours is staying at the Hilton, Stansted and is going to the Saturday show. He hasn't arranged transport for some odd reason so I wanted to ask if there was anybody going to the Saturday show from the Hilton who could give him a lift and back? I'm sure he'd chuck in a contribution for that.

Jul-22-2014, 11:51
That was kind of a last minute decision. Had to do that at least once and i figured i could manage it this time.

We left Seppe at 7am GMT. Cloudbase was very low. Made an unscheduled stop at Midden-Zeeland and left again around 10am GMT flying along the Belgian and French coast crossing the Channel near Dunkirk/Calais (at that time the pilots spotted a small opening along the route).

After the show at Sunday we left Duxford with myself in the Co-seat. The AN-2 flies a lot heavier than the Cessna 172 i'm more familiar with (DUH!). But very stable, a lot of power from the radial.

I've probably passed you guys over at Duxford a couple of times walking along the site...didn't notice as i was completly blown away at flying legends...sorry...i'm now spoiled with all the beaut.. now why ..why..why.. do we only have one flyable MkIX in the Netherlands...:(

Found one error here.

The gentleman third from the left, whom you call "Talisman" is, for sure, not "who" you think he is. In fact, being a big fan of The Who, i can say, without a doubt, that the 3rd from the left is no other than the one and only Pete Townsend! Using an alias and facial hair, no doubt to keep the fans at bay. Just letting you know so you "Won't Get Fooled Again"! Long live rock!!!
