How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
Hi,
Having recorded CoD using the inbuilt recorder I get a trk file but double click it and no media player or editor on pc for it.
How do I convert that to an mpeg2 or avi so as to edit it in a normal video editing prog, add or alter sound track etc, and burn to dvd to play on tv ?
It must be possible as folk get to put a recording onto youtube, I want mpeg2 or avi though.

You have to render it into a normal video format.... look at the manual in the original CLIFFS OF DOVER for instructions.
Rendering can take a very long time... which is why some people prefer to record on the fly using their video card's recording process.
Re: How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
Hi, I have opened the manual from steam >steamapps> common etc location, 118 pages, and searched on trk also record also video also start and it finds nothing, I have then gone through page by page visually and found nothing.
I even google convert trk to mpeg2 and find nothing.
Help !
where is it ?

You need to play the track with the track recorder inside the game. As its playing use a third party software like FRAPS, Bandicam, Shadowplay, etc to capture the video, then you can do post editing in that program changing the format to whatever you program is capable of.
Re: How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
Hi,
ok.
so trk is unique to CoD and nothing else recognises the file.
perform a screen capture on the fly, thank you IL2 team !
Looks like Open Broadcaster software is free and good, though converting trk to mpg would have been so quick , as opposed to this video.
IL2 chose to not make it easy.
glad someone has taken time to plough through whats involved.
now follow this video and get my head round this lot ! 45mins of how to get an mpg.

Re: How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
I use OBS to record my trk files and therefore allow recordings to be played outside of the game and uploaded to YouTube.
Most of the video makers here use OBS I think

Hi BOBC
A track file is not a video file. Think of it like this: the track file records the positions of all the planes, objects, bullets, in a large area around your player's aircraft. It keeps track of your head movements, your damage, other planes damage, and everything that happens. You can view track files back from any angle - your cockpit (not other cockpits though), external views of yours or any other plane, ground units, static cameras, etc, you can even speed up or slow down the time (sadly no rewinding). FANTASTIC tool for making movies as other movie makers like Yotheguy, Bonkin (the master), Mysticpuma, etc will attest.
A video file is just simply a collection of images. It's what is being shown on your screen, what pixels are what colour, rather than what plane is where. The track file isn't pixels, the game renders in real time as you watch the track back, and is affected by your graphics settings and stuff. To get this video file you either use the record to avi tool in Cliffs of Dover itself (which is rather poor) or record using OBS or something like nVidia Shadowplay or Fraps.
Essentially the steps are as follows:
Fly your mission and record the track.
Turn on your recording software like OBS.
Then watch back your track and let OBS record what's on your screen to a video file like MPEG 2. (Although I suggest MP4)

I never made vids, but I always thought this was common knowledge since the early days of original Il2 Sturmovik.

Hi Guys,
understood now,
shame there is no rewind, but if I record the entire playback with OBS I then can rewind and frame by frame etc and edit to my hearts content.
OBS could also be useful for vids I need to make of my CAD work and other things when showing a problem or result.
Cheers

Re: How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
Hi,
I read that:-
The highest resolution for MP4 is 1440x1080/30p (16:9).
I am running 1920 x 1080 and wish video to be of the same size and quality as I view the sim,
what should I use to capture the video when using OBS ?
I also will need to edit it afterwards, add in sounds maybe as well.
Cheers

OBS does capture the video. No additional capture software needed.
H.264 format will record an MP4 file in whatever resolution you want.
Re: How can a trk recording be converted to mpeg2 ?
Hi,
I have installed OBS, new scene call it CoD, select 'display' for what to capture. I had gone through a vidoe a few weeks ago on how to set up OBS anyway so the various steps have been done.
initiate record (F1)
clicked the CoD Blitz logo on taskbar and my trk I had already set running continued to play.
a bit later hit F2 to stop capture.
then went into OBS and file play recordings and played the capture, I see my desktop icons etc then screen goes black and I have CoD sound but no image.
Also the sound is not as I was hearing it, its different, more echoey, certainly not same. not using mic as thats unplugged. sound not acceptable.
no visuals though.
Prior to this I tried Techsmith Snagit, again see desktop, then goes jet black as CoD is maximisied from taskbar, sound was same as trk and original flight, so thats good, but again jet black.
I have now tried OBS again, set the capture to Game Capture, and turned off desktop audio with a red speaker and x if thats the way to turn it off, though I would expect a recording icon not a speaker which is 'playback', leaving mix/aux which is set to 'what u hear' which I always use to capture what the PC is producing.
set it recording, launched CoD from taskbar where I had been about to hit play, hit play and play the mission trk file, F2 to end, and OBS is showing the interface just prior to play, this is looking promising !
however all I see is that interface and I only hear the mission playing, why didnt it capture the visual I was then looking at, its supposed to capture the screen yet I have 10 mins of that trk settings interface instead and just audio.
Grrrrr.
Help !
