    DIY Peripherals - Brake Lever

OK.. so the pinball build is going well...

In the mean time im wanting an analogue brake lever (enter Aduino Leonard #5)

Anyone had any experience of this? I want to put a hall sensor on a bike lever. If anyone else has already done the leg work on this i'm all ears... if not... I'm gonna do the leg work !

I plan to fix it to the extension of my Virpil stick.

Re: DIY Peripherals - Brake Lever

For this kind of bicycle brake adaptation, use Honeyweel SS495A1 or Allegro A1324EUAT, they are very sensitive - so don't require much turn of magnet, small, work in analog mode (+5V Gnd, Signal wires).

You will not achieve bigger resolution in this axis - due the limited lever movement the magnet will turn little, but sufficient for brake in any game.

When I install HALL sensor in CH pedals for a squad mate, face this problem of limited turn movement on magnet, but in the end achieve around 900 "points of resolution" in that axes - considering the 256 points of original CH controller, a good improvement.

In DCS forum Troll user make brake lever for Warthog using an load cell (like in ForceSense joysticks).

BTW - UO53 in Aviasim make this intriguing brake lever design - using GVL224 MagREZ sensor, but the above mentioned HALL sensor can be used in place.

    and so it begins....

Honeywell SS495A and some tiny magnets...

Just tested it on an Aduino Leonardo board... works great

so now the build (and I will use a Pro micro board for this as they are about a fiver.... )

this is how far I have got...

    lever.jpg
lever (£6 a pair n' one of 'em spare!)

    magnets and hall .jpg
Pile of little magnets (£1.15) and hall sensor (£2)

    pilot hole.jpg
Pilot hole drilled for magnet (£0)

    magnet.jpeg
    (magnet in hole (£0)

    hall location.jpg
Hall sensor gets glued in here (£0)

Still have to decide how i wil mount it to the grip....
    (£ TBC)

    Interesting...
I got this stick from a Westland whirlwind
I tested all the buttons and hat switch and they work. I was researching a way to make the brake level work until I discovered I had to shortened the shaft in order to use it as a flight stick for my sims.
I hesitated doing that so the project stranded. But now I feel I am maybe ready to go ahead.

    Very cool.

Adding an axis to that existing lever is very simple. Literally the hall sensor. A magnet and a £5 board. You should be done inside £10.

Re: DIY Peripherals - Brake Lever

Been busy with work so this took a bit of a back seat. But... I had some time yesterday between about 2 and 5am....

    IMG-20190317-WA0014.jpg

    IMG-20190317-WA0016.jpg

I got the magnet aligned a bit off... but nothing that can't be ironed out in calibration... wont be perfect... but... maybe I will make another with the spare lever !

That's the hardest part of this actually... getting the magnet and sensor in the sweet spot. IOts worth spending some time on that.

Next up is to attach it to my Warthog grip.... that's the next thing to figure out !

Re: DIY Peripherals - Brake Lever

    Clamp arrived.

    20190409_180139.jpg

Bolt hole is M8... which would not leave much of the dubious quality "cheese style alloy " die cast brake lever...

I went with an M5 hole and have ordered an M5 to M8 steel insert.... much safer!

    20190409_182920.jpg

    20190409_183014.jpg

The longest part of this has been waiting for parts to turn up from China....

    20190409_183021.jpg

The clamp was well worth the wait though.....

Will report back in a week or so....

I haven't wired it to the board yet as I wanted to see if the extra weight was ok centering wise.

Seems ok. Will need to recalibrate the stick for an new accurate resting centre... easy to do.

And the board is already programmed...

Probably finish it off on Sunday.

    Happy with this.

    Cheers !

It's dead cheap to make and it feels really good.

The clamp made it nicely adjustable too... would have been a lot trickier... and less awesome if I hadn't found that.

One of the biggest issue here withthis sort of addition is the added weight to an already heavy grip... in the wrong place and centering is going to go off. Calibratable... but (if i may use a pirate term)... with a listing rest position

This setup is as adjustable as i think it can get. And it works great.... obviously a counter balance could be used... but.... keeping it simple !

I kept the "button press" lever too... so that will be bomb release now instead.

    Very happy with this !

    all wired up.

    doneish.jpg

    works a charm !

I drilled a small hole on the extension to route the cable through. I wanted to route it through the warthog shaft but it just wasnt possible without re working the grip... and I really can't be botherd !

Still need to tidy up the external wiring up top, (its still as it was for testing)... probably add a few quick release connectors... one outside the extenion and one inside...

It will all be invisible in a few days...

Next up will be a rebuild of the Helicopter Collective

It no longer fits to my new seat !

    That's brilliant!

May I ask where you got the bracket? It looks purposely made for the stick.

From EBay.. or more accurately China...

    41mm motorcycle fork "indicator" bracket

Be weird on a motorbike though.
Why would anyone need a brake lever where the indicators should be?

    Perfect for this application though

    with as ever some modification...

M8 thread doesnt work a all with the brake lever hence the M8-M5 insert

had it working on a Pro Micro board fine ... but... now It is wired it direct to the VPC board

I got some quality guidance from Virpil
