Yes and no, this is where the famous Karaya Staffel (9./JG52) got its name from. Cant believe noone knows this legend around here!
(Google translation of the website of the Traditionsgemeinschaft JG52):
http://translate.google.com/translat...y-a&edit-text=
Basically legend has it that in spring 1942 the entire Staffel was frequently listening to records on an old grammophone and the "Karaya" record was one of the few available to them. Then one day while leading his men Staffelkapitän Hermann Graf forgot the radio callsign assigned to his Staffel and simply reported himself as "Karaya 1" on the radio and ordered his "Karayas" to form up. And thus the Staffel was christened "Karaya" with the best known being Erich Hartmann (352 kills).
The record shown in the OP is a genuine copy of the one the men listened to back in 1942!
Do you have a link of the song? It'd be interesting to hear it.
There is no digital copy of the song that I know of...
We did know that is

I cannot for the life of me find the Karaya song on the internet, however I did find the other side of the same record
"Einmal möcht' jeder gern mit dem Glück ein Rendezvous" (Everybody for once wants a rendez-vous with happiness)

Cool. And I'm sure soon you will make a digital copy of it, won't you?
interesting history thanks , Is it's constructed of Bakelite over aluminium ? having walked around scrap yards often I came across records construed like this from that time period, I guess a good way to check would be to bend in half while flexing back and forth rapidly
Of course, he will! The entire squadron is looking forward to singing the Karaya song everytime Karaya manages to achieve an air victory. At least, if the song is as "good" as we expect it to be.
Btw. Naturally, we will also start singing it everytime a member og 9./JG52 joins the party.

Got a USB record player on order that should be able to play this jewel and at the same time record it digitally!
BTW Meyer: Your signature should read like this:
"Tötet sie alle, lasst keinen am Leben!"

No, the name "Karaya" has nothing to do with Hartmanns wife Ursula. However his aircraft often bore the Karaya name as well as a heart with arrow and his wife's nickname "Usch" or "Ursel" (for Ursula)...
Got my record player today and went straight ahead with recording the song. Here it is in full length:
Thanks for sharing Karaya
Thank you!

You really are a enthusiast and thank you for the lecture, I read some about Hartman, he come off as a nice guy .
He certainly was, also never bragged about his exploits. He once said the only thing he's proud of is that he never lost a wingman in combat (though he at least had one bail out).
In 1943 Günther Capito, a former bomber pilot, was assigned as Hartmann's wingman. Needless to say Hartmann was less than happy about it and for a reason. On their very first flight together they were engaged by P-39 Airacobras:
I remember reading about another rookie wingman of his who lost Hartmann during the flight only to have a Russian fighter slowly sneak up from behind. Hartmann, having spotted the Russian, told his wingman to look behind and watch what happens to pilots who do not carefully observe their surroundings. He downed the VVS fighter in one swift attack.I called to him to turn hard opposite, so I could sandwich the Red fighters, but in his standard-rate bomber turn he got hit. I saw the whole thing and ordered him to dive and bail out immediately. To my intense relief I saw him leave the aircraft and his parachute blossom. I was happy to get this Airacobra, but I was mad at myself for not harkening to my intuition not to fly with Günther Capito
I have re-uploaded the famous Karaya song in much higher audio quality - I hope you guys enjoy this exotic fairy tale!
