    Re: Look at this...

the image seems to come from several of R5689 VN-N. Some are annotated as being taken on August 28th 1942 which I think puts 50 Squadron at Skelly like you say. That's just about 3 miles from me right now. Nothing much left to see anymore.....

Hey Boo, I would bet that in your minds eye you look toward the old airfield and see and hear a lot of the planes of the day coming and going from there.
Sites and sounds taken for granted all those years ago, that we would pay a pretty penny to behold.

I wonder what it's like to hear 100 Lancaster's flying low overhead.....

    Hello, Boo.

I doff my cap to you, sir!

You are right - they were at Skellingthorpe in 1942, when they re-equipped with the Lancaster.

Some airfields are just empty but Coleby Grange nr Waddington is a odd place. Its on low moorland which kinda helps but it has a vey palpable atmosphere. an air of expectancy if you will (I'm not prone to such stuff usually) It was a largely night fighter base in WW2. RAF mosquitos and USAAF P61s and P70s before becoming a Thor launch site in the cold war.

I'm very lucky - my job often takes me to old airfields and there's usually time to explore.

In fact a well made CGI, without follow - much - Hollywood "Star Wars recipe".

I just don't like of that "WT/BLITZ fires", with flames coming from in front engines.

BTW - This BF2C-1 Hawk has "fast engine warm-up" button.

LOL - "Modern" stuff in that 30's planes:

All three of them would have been toast if the Rebels had enough ATM's... definitely not paying attention.

Urban environments are not healthy for tanks without infantry support.

An order, that my grandfather got from the company Focke-Wulf for his employment for the FW 190 in 1941 (see earlyer posts of mine in this tread). The note means: " Oblt Behrens, In grateful appreciation for tireless fruitful grumbling."

I find it hard to believe some of the information one come across . Can anyone confirm this

The fascinating story of Mary Babnick Brown. Her blonde hair had never been chemically treated or heated with curling irons so it was resiliant enough to use for crosshairs in Norden bombsights for bomber aircraft, which had to withstand a wide range of temperatures and humidity.

    Vale Allan Skerman

Mr Skerman, from Mackay, passed away late last week, aged 101.

He was the oldest surviving member of the Rats of Tobruk - the soldiers of the garrison that held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps, during and after the Siege of Tobruk in World War II.

A service for Mr Skerman will be held later this month.
