Further to seeing Marmus' picture in the chat I thought I'd post about one of my other hobbies.....Now I know some of you have dogs and cats...well my missus doesn't 'do' animals.....so I had to get something that was low maintenance as she won't look after anything that I leave when I work away...and I can work away for months at a time....so any animal that needs constant feeding is a no-no....Anyway..TARANTULAS.....They only need feeding every couple weeks and can go without food for months as they are great energy conservers...Also as long as you keep the temperatures approx. correct you can pretty much leave them to their own devices for weeks or months...
I had T's before...I actually had 5 of them about 15 years ago..and a couple were mature at 5 - 6 inches..so its no new hobby for me..I also kept an Emporer scorpion and Praying Mantis in my youth....
Anyway...I had to prove to the missus that I could keep them without her ever seeing them if I needed to so I bought 5 juveniles and kept them under a table for 2 months before I told her about them..which was about a month ago...Suprisingly she was ok about it...she's not funny about insects or spiders but I was still amazed she was more concerned with the fact I kept a secret from her for so long than the fact I had 5 big spiders in the house...Phoah!..Women....Go figure!!
I was brought up on David Attenborough documentaries as a kid in the 70's...Natural History always fascinated me...I have been to Darwins house and am going to the Galapogas Islands and the Amazon on a trek holiday for 3 weeks this year
So here they are...if anyone is interested....Bear in mind these are all juveniles so the biggest is only about 2 and half inches at the mo...although when fully grown will be 8 - 9 inches
Brachypelma Vagans
Grammastola Rosea
Brachypelma Smithi
Acanthascuria Geniculata...Before molt (last week)
Acanthascuria Geniculata...After molt (this week)
I found this T molting last week one morning...so I took a short vid and went to work...when I came back she was on her feet..She gained about a third in size
Trust me...if the missus would have said yes to a dog...then there would have been no contest...
