    Spiders....YUK!!

Further to seeing Marmus' picture in the chat I thought I'd post about one of my other hobbies.....Now I know some of you have dogs and cats...well my missus doesn't 'do' animals.....so I had to get something that was low maintenance as she won't look after anything that I leave when I work away...and I can work away for months at a time....so any animal that needs constant feeding is a no-no....Anyway..TARANTULAS.....They only need feeding every couple weeks and can go without food for months as they are great energy conservers...Also as long as you keep the temperatures approx. correct you can pretty much leave them to their own devices for weeks or months...

I had T's before...I actually had 5 of them about 15 years ago..and a couple were mature at 5 - 6 inches..so its no new hobby for me..I also kept an Emporer scorpion and Praying Mantis in my youth....

Anyway...I had to prove to the missus that I could keep them without her ever seeing them if I needed to so I bought 5 juveniles and kept them under a table for 2 months before I told her about them..which was about a month ago...Suprisingly she was ok about it...she's not funny about insects or spiders but I was still amazed she was more concerned with the fact I kept a secret from her for so long than the fact I had 5 big spiders in the house...Phoah!..Women....Go figure!!

I was brought up on David Attenborough documentaries as a kid in the 70's...Natural History always fascinated me...I have been to Darwins house and am going to the Galapogas Islands and the Amazon on a trek holiday for 3 weeks this year

So here they are...if anyone is interested....Bear in mind these are all juveniles so the biggest is only about 2 and half inches at the mo...although when fully grown will be 8 - 9 inches

    Brachypelma Vagans

    Grammastola Rosea

    Brachypelma Smithi

    Acanthascuria Geniculata...Before molt (last week)

    Acanthascuria Geniculata...After molt (this week)

I found this T molting last week one morning...so I took a short vid and went to work...when I came back she was on her feet..She gained about a third in size

Trust me...if the missus would have said yes to a dog...then there would have been no contest...

Its becoming very popular these days....20 years ago when I had my first ones it was rare and I had to find reptile shops to acquire the livefood for these...You could only get the Ts from specialists and exotic pet shows...Now in the UK most towns have exotic pet shops if you know where to look...I have 3 within a few miles from where I live...the closest is a shop called 'Eight Legged freaks' in the nearest town...

unfortunately some have become so popular that the source of these animals has become a problem due to the international pet trade....some of mine are classed as endangered species since the 70's although mine are all bred by UK breeders...

On the other hand the Poecilotheria metallica is endangered due to their habitat being by cut back by timber cutters in India and is still decreasing...The native location is on 100km2...

    Poecilotheria metallica

It was a tarantula that Sean Connery had on his chest as Bond...Although to people who know about tarantulas this was a farce as the spiders venom is as potent as a wasp sting and Connery wouldn't have it on his chest...They used a piece of glass..the Big Scots Jessie!!....lol

In the book it was actually a venomous centipede

    And by the way...

I get skeeved out every time I watch the Harry Potter with the giant spiders in the woods.

Lewis, I was telling you about the basement in my old house...tons of Wolf Spiders and Centipedes...my wife hated going down there, but they took care of all the other basement bugs...we could tell where they lived by all the bug carcases near the homes.

    Wolf Spider

North American House Centipede - these guys got pretty big, and they are Fast!

    @ Jamz....

On safari in Tanzania I was looking for camel spiders....I found a dead one...but then in our hut I went to the loo...while I was in there the missus yelled out..'Argggghhh'.....then 'LEW'....then 'Arghhhh!'....I shouted back..'Whats the matter?'...Then I heard two loud slaps...Then she said 'Its alright..its ll over'..

When I came into the room she was putting moisturiser into her face infront of the mirror and she said 'Can you get rid of that'....On the floor was a dead 5 inch Camel Spider (solifudae)...She had swatted it with her sandal...She said that when she saw it it was running around the room holding two poles out infront of it....lol...Those where its front legs that they use as feelers when they run...

I was pretty impressed as I love spiders and know a fair bit about them but even these things freak me out......It just shows...Don't mess with girls from Sheffield...They'll MASH YOU UP MAN!!

    Here's the pic from Tanzania

If it makes an intricate web then I'd guess its probably a common orb spider....The thing is with those little chaps is that they are massively different and come in all shapes and colours but are the same species..Consequently you may have a spider there that you have never seen before and you are probably right..its a one off but is still a common orb spider.....We have similar ones in the UK and they don't get very big here though but they are quite beautiful....Checkout - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austral..._weaver_spider

    @Vran

Got to love those little jumping spiders....unfortunately they are always really small..

You can't defang a tarantula...If you do you would remove its ability to eat....They can go without food for months..even upto a year I heard....But they can live upto 25 years...so no..don't defang them...they will die and ther's no need...Their bite is likened to a bee sting..No record of anyone dying from one..and they dont carry diseases that are harmfull to man..Your dog or cat can do more damage than these....they just look impressive ...All mine (I have 7) are docile 'new world' species from brachypelma ,Acanthoscuria and Grammastola genus that flick urticating as a first line of defence so are less likely to strike...African, Asian or Australasian Spiders bite first hence are more dangerous...
