Sky Rendering - Rings In The Sky - Gamma Setting?

In game the sky takes on a series of round rings almost like a rainbow. Is this caused by gamma settings for video card/monitor

more a color bit depth limitation from what I read.
There were some threads about it and some suggestions on how to lessen it, but cant seem to find them.

I'm running a BenQ Monitor 120 Hz, 1920x1080. GTX 570 SOC. Win 7 64 bit, 32 bit colour. I will see if I can find the posts, thanks.

Hi, sry I could not find them. Did a search, but the deal is it's something to do with the limitations of the 8bit color depth.
There were some posts on here, or ACG where by changing the color profile of the monitor or something it made it less obvious.

It's something that has been around for a while, in DCS at sunrise and sunset its pretty bad as well.

Ok a glass of wine or 5 and I am clearly more proficient than when at work on coffee.

Have a look here at one of Redeye's posts near the bottom, maybe it will help. (i never tried it)

Re: Sky Rendering - Rings In The Sky - Gamma Setting?

I noticed the effect became visible once I switched to a tft monitor. A long while back when I had a crt monitor I never saw the banding at all.

I wonder if the e-ips led monitors handle this better?

Anyone used both types of screen and see a difference in the banding?

    Cheers, MP

Thanks gents. I run the game on the BenQXL2720Z TN Panel, 120 Hz Refresh and I use to run it on a Viewsonic VX2739wm TN Panel 60 Hz both 27" and had the problem with both. Its not a huge issue but a little anoying when making combat vids.

I will tweak the Nvidia settings and if I find anything I will report back.

First thing I will try is connect via HDMI instead of DVI. The BenQ will then let me change the RGB as Redeye did on his TV.

DCS is really bad if you are flying during sunrise and sunset. Recording any video is a waste of time.

I found that out in my first DCS P51 vid.

While doing more research it appears you are correct in that it relates to bitrate and dithering and the way in which games are built. I found this quote on another forum. He wasn't bitching at me in this quote.

"I told you its color dithering. Its a cheap-on-resources way to blend colors on something you aren't going to be looking at all the time. Using two colors to make it appear more like 3 colors basically. It causes the banding effect you're noticing by using less colors total to blend from one color (the lightest part of the sky) to the last color (the darkest part of the sky).

It was extremely popular in earlier digital media when computers weren't as powerful as they are today, now its usually used for things that you don't spend the entire game looking at."

Hmm, I found this very interesting, not sure how to implement it.

I only really notice this when doing a night mission. Then it is extremely obvious.
