Request for Information on Wellington IA/IC with Mk XIV bomb sight

    Salute All

As we have mentioned in our updates, we are working on making the Wellington flyable.

As part of this, of course we need to create a bombardier's station.

The early Wellington IA/IC had both the CSBS bomb sight, (as seen already in CoD in the Blenheim) as well as the later Mk XIV/Sperry T-1 bomb sight.

While we have a good deal of information and drawings on the Mk XIV bomb sight itself, the question as to where the various elements were placed in the bombardier's station is proving a bit more difficult to determine. The Brookings Museum Wellington has the CSBS bombsight, and we do have decent photos etc. of this type of sight and where and how it was placed.

But no photos of a Wellington with the Mk XIV sight, only shots from other aircraft with the sight mounted.

Anyone who has detailed information, diagrams, drawings or photos of a Wellington with a Mk XIV bombsight mounted, as well as where the computer was mounted, where bomb switches, etc. were mounted on the aircraft, we would appreciate they contact us. The material should be referenced as to source and large in format as possible. Any manuals for the use of the Mk XIV/Sperry T-1 would also be appreciated. (we do already have some material from US sources, but any RAF guides would be helpful) We do not need Pilot Notes for the aircraft.

    Thanks in advance from TF.

    Buzzsaw,

Just consulted some of my references. ' A Forgotten Offensive' by Christina Goulter has some passing discussion on bombsights including the Mk XIV but no technical details. She does reference 2 sources though

Webster and Frankland 'the Strategic Air Offensive against Germany' vol IV Annex IV 'Bombs and Bombsights' p 37-38

    And

Air Historical Branch 'Armament, Vol 1 pp 287-9.

I don't have either so don't know how useful they may/ may not be. Might be worth a squiz if you haven't checked them out already and if you can find them.

The Forgotten Offensive has an interesting discussion on adapting bomb sights for maritime use but I digress....

    Good luck

Ps I also have 1 image of the Stirling Bombsight in Stirling in Combat but I think it's the CSBS and not what you are after.

Thanks for that... need more sources for the Night bombing campaign anyway, so ordered it.

World War II Wings Line by +4 Publications, Vickers-Armstrongs Wellington has some crude equipment placement diagrams for various marks. Around page 50-ish, there are references to automatic bombsight equipment.

    I'm talking about this one:

Any change of 'bombsight man" correct the "wind arrow" in Blenheim CSBS bombsight?

Actually the wind arrow only repeat the magnetic heading "+" needle, should be adjustable independently and thus helpful for correct the wind drift.

    Buzzsaw

im guessing you / TF have already been down this path but you didn't specifically mention it so I will just in case. Have you visited the uk national archives online re this?

I'm currently having a look and there's a couple of files that might be useful re the Welly and bomb sights. They aren't digitised though so some one would have to go visit to check the file in person. But they might have one useful info.

Again sorry if you have already done this.

Yes, we have... (not myself, another member of the team) but not specifically for this purpose.

Also they had limited time, so anyone who is closer, and who has more time to search, we'd be happy to see what they could turn up.

Wow, there really is a shortage of info. I spent the last 3 days looking, just to try and pitch in. I even bought the Haynes manual (not helpful, and some unrelated inaccuracies were disappointing).
