    Trackhat vs Trackir

Hi I have been playing Cod online for a couple of months now, really enjoying and slowly getting the hang of it. I have been looking at getting some sort of head tracking device to improve the realism and to help me during aircombat. I find using the hat button on the top of joystick a little tricky when in the heat of the fight. Trackir 5 is a little expensive. I have seen a system called trackhat for about £30 which you use with free software, has anyone got any experience of this system playing Cod. I have also seen trackir 4 for about £65. Which one would be the best option for me. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks Rob.

If you can afford it trackir is the way to go.

Thanks for your reply Lolsav, So you would say trackir 4 is the better option as trackir 5 is outside my budget, is there much difference between 4 & 5. Thanks

    Hey Rob,

I've heard that TrackIR is very good. I use Freetrack, and find that it works quite well.
It is a homemade version of TrackIR. So if your money is really tight, or if you like do it yourself projects, you might consider it.
There are multiple threads on head tracking here, and lots on the making and setting up of Freetrack on the net.
Just another option to confuse the issue even more.

    Good luck with it all.

To simplify, the 5 has a wider FOV and its something related with software. Both work as intended almost out of the box.

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

    Rob,

This "Trackhat" (clip) that you heard about is just the LED device, the free software that the seller advise is Freetrack or FaceTrackNoIR - that many people use with success in CLoD and other CFS, is not equal the TrackIR but do the job reasonably well. Notice that besides the "trackhat" and the software you need a good Web Cam - the recommendable is PS3 EyeCam - and do some hack in the camera.

BTW - This "trackhat" clip work with TrackIR, Freetrack, FaceTrackNoiR.

I you have some DIY skill you can build you own LED device for <10$ (depends on what "corner of the world" you live, and save some money.
And maybe - like happen to me - you are trying the "headtrack" experience before buy a more expensive one.
I pay ~230$ in TrackIr4 t some years and no way to get used to the thing, literally make me "silly" or "crazy"!

    DIY TrackClip reference.

    https://www.google.com.br/search?q=f...YQ_AUoAQ&dpr=1

    Google too for Freetrack, FaceTrackNoIR.

EDIT - Good Freetrack assembly tutorial there - is in Polish but clear in English with G.Translator - test video in CLoD.

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

I haven't tried Trackhat...and I use TrackIR 4...and if it malfunctioned and died I would buy another TrackIR...

    My opinion..thats all..

You could try looking at youtube vids of both and see what they say....maybe PM the players who use alternatives to TrackIR.......Again personally if my TrackIR failed and I was looking for a cheap alternative then I would look into Freetrack and DIY devices...Colander is someone I would approach cos he has experience with both DIY and TrackIR.....and he's also a magical wizard!!

    Good Luck..

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

    I use ED Tracker

    https://edtracker.org.uk/

Don't have to mess with a webcam, dots, LEDs, room lighting or anything like that. Costs about $20 total. Just a small project box connected to a headset, clip or whatever you want. Magnetometer/Gyro in the board keeps track of your head movement. I'm not a big hat guy, hated fiddling with FaceTrackNoIR and like playing using my speakers, not headphones.

    It's all just personal preference.

@Fighting Steel.....I have often wondered what the EdTracker is like for CLOD....How is it?....Does it slowly move out of whack?...Is there a centralising key option?...Do you have any videos of you using it with CLOD as I'd love to see it in action?

    Thanks...

Some videos of similar DIY project (accelerometer) MM-GyroTrack.

This kind of device move the mouse cursor, so you are using the game "Mouse View".

The hardware base (Arduino boards) cost less than 10$ in eBay.

I purchased the EDtracker and tried it as well. There are many things that i really like about it, as mentioned by fightingSteel 1 above, although i did have some trouble with drift (which was probably my doing).
I'd be using it today except that i could not find a way to move my head to the side to completely check my six, which i feel is essential.
If they develop a way to incorporate the lateral movement so i could check the 6 o'clock position better, the EDtracker would be my first choice.

The MMTrack has the same problem - from WT forum (GT): "there is a parasitic sensor drift, but used software techniques back in the middle;"

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

The original ED Tracker parts list used a MPU 6050 or something like that, which is just a gyro/accelerometer. The part will drift over time, say in an hour or so. The new part is the MPU 9150, which is both accel/gyro but also a magnetometer. That doesn't drift, or at least when set up properly I haven't had it do that (https://www.edtracker.org.uk/index.p...ding/which-mpu). ED Tracker is really popular with Elite: Dangerous players from what I've heard.

I use OpenTrack with it, and I like it just fine. I have no trouble checking behind me and can dial in smooth movement all around. Again, is TrackIR better? Sure, but for the money this is perfectly fine in comparison. I definitely think it's superior to the Eyetoy/Freetrack, FaceTrackNoIR or whatever combination.

--Come to think of it, I should mention I actually tried this concept/Opentrack first by strapping my Galaxy S4 (using it's gyro, etc.) to a headset and running Opentrack on my computer and the "FreePie IMU" app on my phone. That setup was totally useable, and since I already had the phone, free.

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

Does anyone know why the EdTracker is only 3DOF and not 6DOF?...and are there any plans to make it 6DOF?

Thanks again for all your replies, I have decided to go for trackhat it seems the easier option. Got to say edtracker looks great but I don't have the knowledge to make it. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks

    Re: Trackhat vs Trackir

Hi Rob, I was reading your forum thread regarding Trackhat and CLOD today. I also opted for trackhat but have had no success setting up the profile for CLOD - it's jittery and jumping about. The same profile works OK with FSX. I wonder how you got on tracking in CLOD? If you managed it I would appreciate some info on your settings/mapping etc. I am tempted to try the Edtracking option as it doesn't need webcam and you buy the gadget preassembled for about 40 pounds sterling - I can't justify TrackIR, it's about $350 in Australia! Would appreciate how you ended up. Cheers diggers33

Hi digger I did a complete a Windows reinstall recently and I've not quite got everything such as trackhat up and running again 100℅ yet. I did have trackhat working really well tho prior to the fresh install. I used an older version of freetrack? Which seemed to have settings for il2 forgotten battles?. I will look into it for you as really need to get my rig sorted and get flying again. I will get back to you but it might not be till the weekend. Thanks Rob

Something else to consider is you can use a trackir3 with the 5 software. It's even cheaper and works fine.
