Wing Leader Aviation new "Battle of Britain Combat Archive"

In case anyone may be interested I just received this in the mailing list, a new series by Wingleader

    http://www.wingleader.co.uk/shop/bat...at-archive-v1/

We are very excited to announce the forthcoming launch of an exciting new series of books - The Battle of Britain Combat Archive.
This approximately 10 Volume Series will grow to become the most in-depth record of Fighter Command's part in the Battle ever produced. Concentrating only on the air combats, each day is broken down into separate engagements which are then detailed with lists of claims and losses and most importantly, combat and intelligence reports written by those who actually took part.

With an editorial team including some of the leading Battle of Britain experts, this series presents new and detailed information about every combat in the Battle of Britain, and illustrates it with specially commissioned profiles, maps and full page illustrations by artists Mark Postlethwaite and Piotr Forkasiewicz. This series will become the most significant work on the subject to be published in 35 years; since the Battle of Britain - Then and Now in 1980.

I have the Luftwaffe Crash Archive series from them and its really quite fascinating and interesting reading, I'm sure these would be the same.

You wont be sorry, they say a 10 volume series, each published quarterly. If they are half as interesting as the Luftwaffe Crash archives they will be brilliant.
Will certainly be getting them myself.

The layout is very stylish and clear and the graphics are excellent!
I am looking forward to the whole series, in particular lets see what the Blokes were saying about the "Hardest Day" part of The Battle!

In the 'Luftwaffe Crash Archive' series (volume 2, 15th -29th Aug) the 18th of August is covered in almost 30 pages, with detailed maps, pictures, pilot and constabulary reports, etc. And that was really all just to do with German planes shot down.

sample page from their site, but from the 15th
    http://www.wingleader.co.uk/wp-conte...mplepagesb.pdf

An account of the action given by Otto Rezeppa:
We took off from Orleans-Bricy on the evening of 15th August and orbited
the airfield waiting for the Gruppe to take off. Our target was an airfield north
of Winchester. Over St.Omer we picked up our escort of Bf109s and in the
distance to the west we could see Bf110s. I flew in the aircraft that was the
furthest right in the formation. Another aircraft in our kette was flown by
Uffz Erwin Poggenesee. After we crossed the coast I was the first to spot the
enemy. I shouted and fired in the direction of the fighters as they swept in
from the right. In what seemed a few seconds, but was probably ten minutes,
everything happened. We shot at a Hurricane on the tail of Obltn HansJoachim
Helbig’s aircraft (Staffelkapitan). Suddenly, Willi Rimek panicked
and jettisoned the rear canopy and my gun. He suddenly collapsed and lay
on the cabin floor with his mouth wide open; he had been shot in the back of
the head and killed instantly. I then waved my hankerchief at the attacking
Hurricane and Fritz Dieter decided to land, which he did at very high speed
in a corn field. As the aircraft stopped we all got out. I was limping as I had
been shot in the right leg, and dragged out Willi’s body. Soon British troops
arrived. We all stood there covered with dust. They took my camera, gun and
knife and took me on a stretcher away from the aircraft. We were then taken
to a hospital in Chichester where I met an RAF pilot who had a wound in his
shoulder. I think he shot us down. He said I was lucky as I would survive the
war. He was not sure if he would.
    It's sobering stuff

Re: Wing Leader Aviation new "Battle of Britain Combat Archive"

Another shameless punt for the crew at Wingleader.

Although due to exchange rate horribleness I have lagged behind in their publications, the ones I have are simply superb.
Heres a short video from the editor giving a rundown of what you can expect to get from any of the editions they publish.

Battle of Britain 2 is now available.
    http://www.wingleader.co.uk/

I have the full Luftwaffe Crash archive, and the BoB series is firmly in my sights when the economics improve.

disclaimer, I live in Africa, under a tree, and have no affiliation to wingleader other than admiration for their work.

I'm not to quick to vouch or stick my neck out for too much, but the editions I have so far from them are pretty darn excellent.
It's not so much the plain and simple historical facts presented, which are out there already, but the detail in how they are presented and the almost personal flavor they add with the constabulary reports, pilot accounts of the action on the day, etc, which really sets these volumes apart from anything else I have come across. It's a chronological account, that is easy to grasp without any embellishments of an author as such, and imho as you read through the days, kind of cuts to the nerve of the times as you read through the actual accounts of the action.
Despite R22 ZAR to the 1 Pound, I just ordered them. From single malt to blends for a while
    Its just bloody worth it.

Thanks for the review. I'd order both volumes in a heartbeat but for the $26 (nearly the price of a single volume) shipping cost to the US.

Re: Wing Leader Aviation new "Battle of Britain Combat Archive"

I'm still trying to rationalize the shipping cost to the U.S. and the cummulative cost of all volumes once complete. I've also been looking into "The Battle of Britain: Then and Now" (http://www.amazon.com/The-Battle-Bri.../dp/0900913460) which appears to provide comprehensive coverage too. Does anybody have both the BoB Combat Archive book(s) and the BoB Then and Now book and willing to compare/contrast the two?

Volume Nine covers from 25th July 1941 – 31st December 1942. This period covers the beginning of the Baedeker Raids and the appearance of new enemy types such as the Do217, Bf109F, Fw190 and even the Me210. This volume has the usual selection of original photos, colour profiles and specially commissioned maps to illustrate the aircraft involved.

Battle of Britain Combat Archive V3

We are delighted to announce that it is now possible to pre-order the long awaited Volume Three of the Battle of Britain Combat Archive series. This volume has been an epic in terms of production, hence the slight delay. In fact, we had to include an extra 32 pages, (160 in total), to fit in all the photos and information that we assembled covering 9th - 13th August 1940. There's the usual selection of specially commissioned maps, profiles and illustrations along with some genuinely rare photos, including one of VK coded 238 Squadron Spitfires!
To see some sample pages and to pre-order, please click on the cover image. Publication Date will be 1st October.

Still plugging away, and unashamedly so as they do great work although I am a fair bit behind myself (the shipping kills me, not the cost of the books). But just in case you chaps want to have a look, some new releases.

Re: Wing Leader Aviation new "Battle of Britain Combat Archive"

Well there is a much anticipated movie due one of these days, but another for the collection may be this.

    Coming soon (July)

    Dunkirk Air Combat Archive
Some months ago, we explored how possible it would be to apply the Battle of Britain Combat Archive style and approach to Dunkirk; to prove one way or the other if the myth about the RAF 'not being there' was actually true or not.

Well, after months of intense research, we are delighted to announce that the book is complete and runs to a massive 192 pages. It's probably the best book we've ever produced and is scheduled for publishing in mid-July.

We'll officially launch it next week with a mailout and on the website. Until then, here's a sneak preview of the cover art.

    Best regards,

Do they not have options to buy as a series anymore? You used to be able to buy a bunch at once to save a few bucks and I was thinking of doing that since it would be rather expensive to get them shipped out to Canada. EDIT: just checked, it would cost me $350 CAD plus tax to buy all 6 of the Battle of Britain books! (150 GBP + 45GBP shipping)

    Hi Flare
I bought a bunch of editions from them over time.
I, for my sins, live in South Africa, and when it comes to this type of thing we get screwed properly on shipping.

Yes,wingleader certainly did offer bundle deals and maybe still do, not sure. I bought Luftwaffe archive bundles in the past.

I have a pile of awesome books, would like to add more but for some reason they cannot sort out shipping costs outside of UK.
If I buy 1 edition at a time, from memory the shipping cost was = or more than the edition.
    thats not on!

Their books are incredibly detailed though, I want all of them.

For international customers, for some reason, the shipping they use costs the same or more than the purchase. They need to really get that sorted. The books are awesome.

Yeah, definitely on my Christmas list. Can't wait to get a hold of a set.
Just found a deal on the massive "Spitfire: The History" and got it shipped across the pond from the UK. Some are gouging copies for $200-300 USD.

Well, my order made it to Canada in less time than I expected! These books are expensive but boy they seem worth it. Really fantastic, very detailed. Filled with combat reports and includes all the claims and loss reports from each side so you can see how much everybody overclaimed! They are quite large format as well, about the size of a large magazine, bigger than I was expecting.

Re: Wing Leader Aviation new "Battle of Britain Combat Archive"

Just want to be sure everyone knows about Wingleader's new online magazine. The online version is free.

I have several of the BoB series and would have more if I had the money!

    On sample of Wingleader 7:

    310 Combat Intelligence Report - 26, August 1940

"Span and range setting 60 feet and 250 yards respectively."
    "Cine guns where not carried."
